I'm glad he's sorry - he should be. Don't show sympathy because it's he's only been reported twice since becoming a Swan - it was a mindless & bloody stupid thing to do.

I was gutted when I saw it - our own player has sabotaged our season.

The club should suspend him for 8 weeks regardless of what the AFL does to show him the club has a zero tolerance to thuggery.

He should spend the first 2-3 weeks of that suspension away from the club too - just so the message sinks in properly. (or tell him if he does it again, he'll be sacked).

He was a co-captain. He was our captain in 05 & held the cup. Would Paul Kelly have done this?

The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.
What hope has Hall got when even supporters of his own team have hung, drawn and quartered him. OK, he did it, has admitted it was wrong and that he is willing to take his punishment. Under the current tribunal system, using the gradings available it is a 4 week suspension. Why are people calling for more? The system used now must be implemented and cannot suddenly be ignored or tampered with just because his punch actually connected! That would threaten the integrity of the system and set a dangerous precedent. It cannot change mid-season just to suit a specific incident.
Best post I've seen about all this yet.

4 weeks is under the MRP system. The tribunal can give him whatever they like.
I actually think 4 weeks is a fair punishment either way. Ignoring that he is injured 4 weeks is a long suspension for someone that hasn't been suspended for 5 years.
The interesting test is whether or not the MRP does refer it to the tribunal. As I said earlier it is fairly open to interpretation, but I think the ruling should be that whilst Staker may not have suspected the retaliation to be a punch he was niggling and wrestling with Hall and can't have been entirely unsuspecting of some kind of contact. Unsuspecting to me suggests that Staker would have had to be completely minding his own business and had Hall walk up and punch him out of nowhere. I'm concerned that if the MRP refers it to the tribunal it will be more due to public indignation than looking at the incident in isolation.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

Yep, unsuspecting is what Leigh Matthews did to Neville Bruns, Peter Giles and others.

Yes, it's certainly not unsuspecting to that degree, but he wouldn't be expecting a left cross to the chin, especially when they weren't even in the stage when there was any shoving or squaring up or anything remotely like that.

I heard that it had already been referred to the tribunal. On the news this morning which I was clicking around.
That indicates that they won't be satisfied with 3 or 4 weeks due to public outcry.
Which means they will be looking for significantly more, and IO am now leaning towards 8.
Silly of Hall to say he'll accept what they give him.
Gonna look silly if he gets 16 weeks won't he?
I think 4 is probably fair for the reasons in the quoted post.
It was the heat of the moment, and not premeditated.

Players have been given 5 weeks for charging and things like that, so you'd have to think Hall will get at least 6.

That's where I find it extremely open to interpretation.

Were those based simply on the base gradings of the charge as assessed by the MRP BEFORE loadings/carryovers were added?
Remember that you need to look at what the base ponts for an offence are when comparing punishments, not what the player actually serves due to the discounts/multipliers for early pleas/previous good or bad records/carryover points etc etc.
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
Or they may have been simply a decision by the Tribunal on its own discretion. I can't recall all the details.

Ben Johnson got 6 weeks for a bump, that's probably the most recent big incident. I don't think he had any carry over points.

Are you for real - in the whole time I've followed AFL, I reckon when Locket (as a Saint) took Peter Caven's face off is the only worse incident I've seen.
He will get 6-8 weeks minimum & he'll probably get extra because it's Barry Hall.
I'm glad he's sorry - he should be. Don't show sympathy because it's he's only been reported twice since becoming a Swan - it was a mindless & bloody stupid thing to do. Can we afford to be without him for 6-8 weeks? This severly impacts on the Swans ability to finish top 4 - we are up & going & he has shot the Swans in the foot. I hope I'm wrong, but if we make finals & miss top 4, every supporter can quite rightly blame Barry Hall.

Hang on - ok what if the hit hadnt of happened? And all that happened on the night was that he broke his wrist, would you still say that he sabotaged the Swans chances of making the top 4? because the wrist injury will have him out of the game for pretty much the same amount of time as the suspension. Hmm interesting.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

I've said it a hundred times already (or nearly) ... the game timed missed from his INJURY is going to be LONGER than the game time missed through his SUSPENSION.
He is "lucky" he broke his wrist - so the suspension time served will be moot.
What a great left hook. Gotta love seeing a budgie fall off the perch.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun. Blessedare the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.
