Barry Hall to Bulldogs rumour

One thing I haven't noticed is what people think Baz would like to do, mainly:
Does Bazza want to move to a team with a stronger chance of a premiership? or does the loyal bugger stick around with his team and watch them become a solid middle tier team (I really hope we don't slide, but I could happen).
p.s. this is how you could be 'his biggest fan' and still want him to move on. One player is not bigger than the team, except maybe Capn'
Bazza has only one year on his contract (ATM),the Swans are going to have to learn how to kick to another forward soon, will they need a years practice?"Fortunately, this is the internet, so knowing nothing is no obstacle to having an opinion!." Beerman 18-07-2017Comment

I find it hard to reconcile being a fan of Barry with being happy for him to move on. I am a huge fan of his but I'm happy to admit it's an entirely selfish form of fandom. I am a fan of him as a Swan and I selfishly want to watch him continue to be a Swan for at least the next year, hopefully longer. I don't think the club owes him the right to move to a team that might have a moderately better chance of a GF in the next two years. He's had the chance to experience the greatest pinnacle of footy in his time with the Swans, something many great players have never got to experience over their careers. Sure, he's contributed a huge amount to that success himself but he did it as part of our club and didn't do it on his own.
I am not sure I'd go as far as saying I think he owes the club something back but I do hope he sees that staying with the club and, at worst, helping the next generation play within a team that has every right to expect to remain highly competitive while he is still a part of it is likely to be as satisfying as moving on to chase glory elsewhere within a club which he'll probably never feel truly a part of.
And yes, I am a footy optimist too. I don't accept the doom and gloom view that the Swans are no chance over the next couple of years. An awful lot will need to go right to bridge the gap to where the Cats currently are but it is not beyond the realm of possibility that those things could happen. A fitter Goodes, Malceski, Kennelly at the very least could make a significant difference. Then it depends on how quickly Bird and Vezspremi can increase their endurance and body strength to build on what they did now. Whether Jack has it in him to take another couple of huge strides forward. Whether Currie will be able to provide decent support to Jolly next year and the one after. Whether the likes of Schmidt, Laidlaw, Thornton can get over this year's injuries and make a contribution next season. Whether Macca and Bevan can maintain their levels of this season. How close Murphy is to coming in and taking the competition by storm
Yes, a lot of ifs, buts and maybes but not beyond the realm of possibility. And if Geelong come down even a notch or two, it is not entirely a pipedream. At worst, I think we can reasonably expect the team to perform at a similar level to this year. Not a huge amount went particularly right in 2008 - maybe Macca's emergence was one of the truly unexpected events - and yet we marginally improved on last year. Even if we make just make the bottom of the top 8 and play a couple of finals again, that's better than sinking to the bottom.
But despite the fact that sometimes the team looks less functional with Hall than without, bridging that gap to the top teams is far more likely to happen with Hall there than without him. He is in no way a list clogger because we have no-one remotely capable of coming in an playing his role at the moment - except maybe Goodes, but we want him elsewhere.
My view might be slightly - only slightly -moderated if we were likely to get anything really valuable in return for a trade. But it really is potluck what we might get with the Dogs' second round draft pick or something similar. Ray really doesn't excite me at all - he'd get a game in our midfield but wouldn't really add the class we crave and it would be at the expense of a Meredith or Laidlaw or Barlow. And the thought of Street in the red and white makes me cringe. I reckon it would have us all yearning for a return to the glory days of Chambers in the ruck!Comment

BTW, I haven't read many posts rubbishing Hall. Exploring the possibility of a trade is not the same as rubbishing him.Last edited by Big Al; 23 September 2008, 08:56 PM...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. Well I for one would miss big BAz. You gotta love that head, and he will play on and play well for a couple of years yet. Very fit man, blokes fall over when he shapes up to them(Port game). I suppose Roosy and the suits will do whatever they think best and if Baz wants to go then they should just wave as he goes and we get a quality midfielder or a very high draft pick or two.

I could accept Hall's departure only if it's in exchange for an elite midfielder like a Kerr - nothing less.
It would also step up the so-far glacial pace of refreshing our list. Two older players have just retired but we still have five over 30, including BBBH.
But he is still a good player and our most important forward. Any team who wants to acquire him will need to make it worth our while. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

If our premiership clock has done its dash, why are we going for Kerr?
I don't have a problem with trading Barry. He is 32 next year and lets get something from the doggies while they can use him for another 2 years.
Good deal for everyone. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Everyone breathe a collective sigh of relief. Peter Street has been delisted by the Dogs. Of course, that'll probably mean we'll pick him up in the PSD...Comment

A few more years of 5th to 8th!!! Maybe???
One and all, I will always revel in the suprise premiership of 05 and GF of 06 however the Swans now stand at a crossroads, Leo Barry has now re-signed and whilst Bird, Jack, Moore, The "Vesper", etc will get better, unless 2 kids have break out first years in the firsts, Murphy, Daniel Okeefe, Orreal, Currie or others, then we are pretty much destined to the above position.
Quite simply we cannot run with the big guys, our elder statesmen will be a year older and slower, we have no outside creative midfielders (style almost dictates this), McVeigh was great this year as a runner, but not set-up guy and most likely Carlton, Collingwood and maybe even Richmond will surpass us.
Whilst Mattner was very good, how does trading two 23 years olds for one 25year old refresh your list, I am not talking about ability just age. Paul Roos is like most other coaches, he has one pony and he will ride it till it drops. Look at Brisbane because thats where we will be in two years, out old stars gone and our younger players without enough support.Comment
