I'm working from home today and have his press conference going in the background... well crafted sneaky question thrown in by a journo of (paraphrasing) "do you see any difference in your fitness now that you're not using", Ben answered "no" but you can imagine what the lead item for the sports news would have been if he went either way.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

They only offered him a one-year contract.

Why? Do they think they're going to be 2009 premiers or something?
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I'll be a tigger hater in 2009, that's for sure.

I used to feel sorry for the tiges, but I don't anymore.

Because he doesn't have much bargaining power, do you really think any club in that position would stitch someone up long term?

But it seems such a waste and a stoopid decision by the Tigers ... with new teams coming in, you'd think the Tiggers would have played it safe (like the rest of the teams) and tried to recruit some youth. That's what they were talking about at the beginning of the week.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

You wouldn't think so reading some of the threads/posts on this forum at times.

I loved that question that went like "do you think you will be role model...."

                        Role model for what?

He admitted he had a drug addiction a couple of times and from what I have been hearing on radio lately he has been in a lot trouble in this regard for 5 years.

So he hasn't tested postive for drugs of any sort; how is that possible under the AFL testing regime? How did he manage to duck and weave the tests?
Was his timing perfect every time so that nothing was in his system? Could it be that masking drugs we able to cover up the facts? Or could he have been using undetectable drugs either perfomance or non performance enhancing?

The AFL demanded that WCE come clean on what they knew, but we will never know what they told the AFL. Did they, the WCE have a hand in any cover up?

I am rather perplexed by all this. Is there anyone who can enlighten me?

This has me puzzled as well, I used to be employed as a drug-tester and I can't work out how he was NEVER CAUGHT.

For those who didn't see the press conference, he spoke frankly and actually quite well (for a footballer).

I also noticed that the "smirk" from the past was not there. I thought he handled the questions well, pity about his manager.

So if he has been an addict for 5 years and has never been caught, then as Connolly has steadfastly said he is a cheat or has been able to knowingly cheat the system.

IIRC Justin Charles was lambasted as a cheat and disqualified for 2 years. He did test positive. Yet Cousins admits he took drugs and clearly dodged the system with amazing footwork, and he is welcomed back to the fold after incredible publicity of his antics and his apparent ambivilence to the issues; with open arms by most journos and the vocal supporters to a person who are ringing talkback radio.
