(In case youse don't get it ... this is a "classic" trick played on apprentices in days gone buy. You'd send them down the road to the parts place/hardware/etc. telling them to go and pick up a "short weight" or a "long weight". Of course, the other person was in on it, and would have them sit and "wait" for whichever for however long. It takes a while for it to sink in apparently. Harmless AND funny!!)

I think to personally blame Kennelly 100% for walking out now without knowing all the details is a bit tough. Sure,some possible reasons don't look good for him as a person but we simply don't know the fine print or what may have been "arranged" with him. (eg The coach may have agreed to see how he handled pre-season and he decided after pre-season his body could not take another year.)If the Coach and Club doesn't mind maybe we should be upset at the Club not the player.

Retrospective guilt trips about unknown player X whose life was destroyed by this decision are stretching moral responsibility too far! The poor guy who didn't get my job because I took it is not my responsibility. It's tough but it's life and you move on. If you are good enough you get your turn.

The key point in all this is the weakness of the club in enforcing it's contracts.Where else can an individual beat the organisation as easily and carefree as this?

Anyways,all misgivings aside for a moment. I loved his dash,his daring and his brain fades.Truly made a difference to the team when he was playing at his best. Sad to see him go but it was also time I feel. He did really well out of the experience and good luck to him. I thought the shoulder popping was courageous...it hurt all the way to where I was watching! Great athletic player and one of the greats of the 2005 Premiership Team.

It happens in most profesional sports - sensible coaches and administrators are able to spot that an unhappy player in the ranks can do more damage to the overall morale and well being of the team and club then letting them go. What would be the point in enforcing Kennelly to see though this season if his heart wasn't in it?

1. He could either be injured for the entire season, result for the club lost wages of over $250K or whatever the amount was

2. He could be a malcontent in the dressing room, whinging to the press, spreading rumours about other players and generally acting in a malicious manner towards the club, his team mates and supporters, result for the club, lost wages and incalculable damage to the team structure

These are just two examples of this happening in other professional sports, and whilst I'm loathe to compare Kennelly, or the Swans to the fairies that play soccer it happens on a regular basis in the EPL.

He didn't want to play this season having tested his body in pre-season. He wanted to give Roos, the club and it's supporters the respect they deserve by discussing it with them fully. Doesn't anyone realise that he would never announce it in the press before discussing it with the club?

Do those who are complaining about this contract release not realise how futile any legal action or attempts at recourse would be? Or are you all complete idiots?

Anyway, Tadhg is a legend and I wish him all the best in his quest to realise his heart's desire. I wish he had been able to play out his contract, but people accusing him of bad faith are very poor judges of character in my book.

Geez I hope all you people bagging Tige are just kidding. Otherwise it's pretty disgusting.
By the way you don 't get paid for playing in Ireland and it's not clear he has a job to go to. Sure he has some dosh and the family still runs a pub I think. But his dad died at the end of 2005. I have met his Mum and she loves that boy and misses him as only a mum can miss her kids.
I have kids of my own and I know how hard it must have been for her especially after Tim died. Geez bloody Chris Judd left West Coast so he could come back to Melbourne cos he missed his family. Good on him getting out of that bloody Perth drug den but his family reasons were valid and we should respect that just as we should respect Tige's decision.
He is a good bloke and he is now head of his family. For god's sake he has given us a lot give the bloke a break.

Must say I'm surprised at the strength of the anti-Tadgh sentiment expressed in these posts. Also must say, though, that I'm a bit disappointed about the timing of his retirement and I feel that he's let the club and supporters down a bit. My family and I are Melbourne based members and my sister's daughter idolises Tadgh. My sister and niece were even going to fly up to Sydney this year if Tadgh's last game happened to be there. Now, Tadgh's announced his retirement on a Thursday in January and will apparently be on a plane to Ireland on Monday! I feel all Swans supporters have a right to feel slightly betrayed by his handling of the situation. Yes, Tadgh gave us a lot but he was extremely well paid and was given hero status by Swans supporters and, indeed, much of the wider AFL community.

HOWEVER, loving the Swans as I do, I just can't hold a grudge against anyone who dons the red and white and especially if he's a member of the team that brought us glory in 2005. And my favourite memory of Tadgh comes from that last Saturday in September,2005. With the Eagles second last attacking move, after a long kick towards goal, the ball came off a pack and dribbled towards the Eagles goal. Tadgh was there, swooped on the ball and coolly ran it through for a point. Not spectacular, I know, but if an Eagle had got there before Tadgh, we'd have been runners up in 2005, not Premiers!

Thank you, Tadgh. Could've handled your retirement a lot better, I feel, but thank you so much for being such a big part of of our emergence as a force to be feared in the AFL!

Well, I've already said my piece so I won't repeat it, but to say that I'm glad there are some fans on this forum that share a more balanced view.

While I know this doesn't carry too much weight with a number of so-called Swans fans on the forum who have previously called for Roosy's head, my personal belief is that if the head coach of the club backs the decision, that speaks volumes for the process in which Tadhg came to make it...

A. Well he has a contract. The purpose of contracts is to ensure that promises are kept. They are legally enforcable. Where on earth (Kilkenny perhaps?) did you get the astonishing idea that contracts can't be enforced? The very basis of contract law is the capacity of enforcement and the rights of the parties to enforce contracts or in the breach to seek and recieve damages. Are we living in in some primitive barter society. i thought Australia was a relatively sophisticated economy with an effective superstructure of law. Really dumb idea apparently.

A. The way Kenneally did this was simply unacceptable. He presented the club with a fait acompli. He failed to speak to Ireland (the club manager) but spoke to every man and his dog in Kerry (the brother, the local jouno, the town drunk etc). He has done more to demoralise the young players as a senior player than a grumbler in the dressing room. Most sporting contracts have an effective way of dealing with non-performers. The contract gives a right to the club to drop them from the first team and strong contracts have penalties, default clauses and sliding pay scales. This is (or at least was) professional sport. Integral to professional sport is the club/player contract.

While Kenneally and Coney will be playing on the villiage green we will be two players short on the roster and have lost an important senior player after the period of pre-season player recruitment has ended. This same senior player sat through the draft period and said not a word apparently to his manager or Ireland that he was leaving, issued a press release stating he was playing in 2009 and then suddenly had the bright idea to break his contract when the club was locked in to its drafting and recruiting decisions. Legend. Sure right up there with Skilton and Kelly.

Probably shouldn't bother but Lexington University doesn't exist. Perhaps you mean the Opus Dei outfit Lexington College in Illinois for devout catholic women which specialises in hospitality management. No wonder you don't have a clue what summer of lover means lassie.
