if a player comes to a decision after careful consideration and consultation with medicos, physios, the coach and his closest team-mates past and present that he does not have what it takes it is not in the interest of the club for him to stay out out of duty/loyalty.

this is a much better situation than him pulling the plug mid-season after a sequence of below-par performances.

it is also a much better situation than there having been a hasty decision at the end of last year.

and if you think simon is wrong about the nature of afl contracts, then please point out his error instead of trying to paint him as arrogant. play the ball not the man and you might just manage to reflect some of the character tadhg has shown in the past decade.

Fancy wishing further injury on a bloke whose dediction to the Swans sees him play on after getting a team mate to fix a shoulder dislocation...

It's very sad to see him go. He's clearly had a hard time coming to the decision. Putting aside the last two years' injuries for a moment, the fact that he stuck it out the last three years since his old man passed on is testament to the bloke that he is.

So many great memories from watching him play that I can't single any out. Maybe the end-to-end passage of play that he created and followed in the '05 GF if I was pushed to name one. Above and beyond all that, a tremendous bloke to meet and have a chat with on Coogee Beach one day following a club recovery session is how I'll remember him. He stuck around with Andrew Schauble for half an hour or so after the rest of the team had left just chewing the fat.

If you do bother having a look at this Tadhg, best of luck mate and hope you do win an All Ireland title, honour your old man's contribution to the game and end up getting everything you hope out of the decision to go back early.

Thats a bit rich after his superior posturing. Some of us believed that Coney should have been held to his contract and the shafters from ulster pursued in the courts. There were grounds. Please refer to the ealier thread. Action aganist Coney and the Ulster GAA would have made Kenneally really seriously think twice about walking out. We either have real and enforced contracts or not. Hawthorn do. We don't apparently. A new principle is being put forward here. The only professional footballers who play for the club are those who deep down passionately want to. The number of footballers who have played for clubs at a high standard who would rather have been somewhere else is legion. Of course everyone would like to be with a club on the cusp of a premiership. Professional footballers play where they are contracted. Amateurs play where they please. We have just seen an amateur attitude take hold of the club. Not a good sign for the future. How would you feel if you were a young footballer seeing a senior premiership player walk out on the club and contracts because hey he feels like it. Kenneally (and Coney) have given us the finger and have no doubt left a deflated and demoralised group of young players behind them. This is not a rebuilding process of which the club is in charge. Its a shambles.

1. I dont think there is any point from a personal performance perspective in making these guys perform their contracts. What good would an uncommitted Tadhg have been for 2009. I think the club is smart not wasting money forcing someone to perform (in legal fees etc). Really what benefit did Hawthorn for example get out of forcing Everitt to stay in 2006 other than feeling good about themselves.

I wish Tige well. He has given skin and bone to the club for 10 years. He's a True Blood an immortal who will live forever as a member of the 2005 team. I wondered last year if his body could stand another year. I mean having Leo popping your shoulder back in three times a game, a dicky knee ..... I have loved very minute of watching him play. I will never forget those runs from the backline.....Sad he is going and sad we won't get a chance to say goodbye at the SCG. Same with Fozzy-two blokes who have given us all they could. All you smart arses bagging him you should get another club to follow you make me sick

Well said Bloodlines. You are right - the thing I'm saddest about is that we won't get a chance to farewell him (or Fozzie) properly. They were both major contributors to one of the greatest memories of my life.
