Surely if he retired because he wanted to go home, the club would be under no obligation to pay his salary for 2009?

Of course not and they won't be.

But what is included in the salary cap (in certain years) and what is paid or not paid to a player is not the same thing.

Otherwise you can get clubs loading or not loading deals and moving retirements around from one year to the next to minipulate the salary cap and draft.

Fancy wishing further injury on a bloke whose dediction to the Swans sees him play on after getting a team mate to fix a shoulder dislocation...

It's very sad to see him go. He's clearly had a hard time coming to the decision. Putting aside the last two years' injuries for a moment, the fact that he stuck it out the last three years since his old man passed on is testament to the bloke that he is.

So many great memories from watching him play that I can't single any out. Maybe the end-to-end passage of play that he created and followed in the '05 GF if I was pushed to name one. Above and beyond all that, a tremendous bloke to meet and have a chat with on Coogee Beach one day following a club recovery session is how I'll remember him. He stuck around with Andrew Schauble for half an hour or so after the rest of the team had left just chewing the fat.

If you do bother having a look at this Tadhg, best of luck mate and hope you do win an All Ireland title, honour your old man's contribution to the game and end up getting everything you hope out of the decision to go back early.

I don't rate ending a contract early, it's a commitment broken and I find it very disappointing .. it will taint my memory of him. We needed him this year almost more than any year.

However, his story is a fantastic one and I will always remember him jumping on Leo when the final siren rang in 2005...Good luck Tadhg.

Hes broken a commitment to the club and his mates that he had in place.
Though understand his desire to go back and play while he is half fit.
What its telling me is that his body is shot for another tilt at the AFL , though playing at a high level back home will be achievable.
We are the winners of the whole thing and so is Tadgh.

Only great memories in my book, his tag in his shorts , and then telling others how to play footy. Good Luck Tadgh will be sorely missed.

Personally, I understand some of his reasons and feel for the guy a bit (Well sort of). But nonetheless, It's a @@@@ act IMO. He's let us down big time. If he was so concerned about going home, he should of made that decision before the PSD or even the National drafy. All he's done now is @@@@ over the club that gave him a chance to play and paid him hundreds of thousands for the privilege.

Thank you so much Tadhg... you have been a tremendous player and a fantastic club man... you will be sorely missed and I wish you all the best in Ireland.

To the people here... please don't lose sight of just what Tadhg has contributed to the Swans for all the years he has been here... or that this decision does not spell the death of our mighty club.

We may not be as competitive this year, as we have been in the past... but I will love and support my team anyway... it makes me sad to think that for some 'supporters', team loyalty is a subjective concept

Piss poor would be deserting your "team mates" and leaving them with no options. Especially when you had the time & opportunity to do something better;

Fair call. Maybe a bit OTT. But he can get injured there as well as here and the way he has decided to leave is unforgiveable. Had he called it quits in prior to either of the drafts and left us some options, well a different story altogether.

Has been a great servant of the club up until now. A fantastic player up until the 2007 season. As others have said, the timing of his retirement is nothing but selfish. At least now we wont have to listen to the constant tedious talk of Tadhgs desire to go home.
Given his last 2 seasons have been so poor, due to injury, odds on, this year would have been much the same, so maybe not much of a loss afterall. The bad news is, we're yet another player short. The good news is, a bunch of keen hopefuls are waiting in the wings for their chance. Hopefully one of them will grab it.

You're right. His form has not been good for the past two seasons, and the chances of him recovering from all his injuries were slim. We were lucky to have him when he was at his best.

I hope he does well in Irish football and beyond. I'll remember him fondly.
