Not sure about that. The circumstances are a bit different to Fosdike given that injuries have forced him to retire. He was contracted and generally clubs are obliged to pay out all contracted amounts even if a player is unable to continue.
While injuries may have been part of Kennelly's decision, if he is off to play Gaelic footy, it is hard for him to argue that he is not just quitting on his contract. In which case I would be surprised if the club is obliged to pay him his entitlements for 2009. And if they don't have to pay them, they won't fit into either last year's or this year's salary cap.
I also suspect that we won't be entitled to promote a rookie to cover Kennelly's spot on the list, assuming any warrant it. Fosdike probably qualifies to go onto the LTIL for the season. Kennelly probably won't. If a player retires for non-injury purposes, he can't just be replaced with a rookie.
