The first of a semi-regular series this year.
The mighty Norwood Redlegs, in their season opener, defeated traditional rivals Port Adelaide 15.12 (102) to 10.9 (69) tonight. All 5 ex-Swans recruits at the club played tonight, and a quick rundown as far as radio commenary reveals:
Sam Rowe was the unexpected star, coming off a very minimal pre-season that made many query if he could run out the game. 4 goals including 3 in a 10-minute purple patch the 3rd term that blew the game open, and a livewire at CHF.
Dean Terlich continued on from outstanding pre-season form that won him a spot in the league side. 3 goals including the very first of the season, and the sealer in the last. A very composed and mature performance for a debutant on the HFF.
Simon Phillips as per usual, nippy at the bottom of the packs, in everything, and unreliable with disposal. 1 goal. Also got reported for (I think) shouldering the head of an opponent smaller than him! Commentators thought there was little in it. (No pun intended.)
Matt Davis again as usual, solid, reliable, did the team things and was largely unspectactular off the HBF. Kicked a goal on the half-time siren, though.
Stephen Doyle played in the ruck. And he did not get injured. Let me repeat that. He. Did. Not. Get. Injured. Woo-hoo!
Only ex-Swan for the Maggies was James Meiklejohn, who in 2008 was one of the best ruckmen in the comp. Seemed reasonably tight between him and the Norwood rucks.
