Shameless gloating with tangential relevance to the Swans (aka The ex-Swans thread)

The first of a semi-regular series this year.

The mighty Norwood Redlegs, in their season opener, defeated traditional rivals Port Adelaide 15.12 (102) to 10.9 (69) tonight. All 5 ex-Swans recruits at the club played tonight, and a quick rundown as far as radio commenary reveals:

Sam Rowe was the unexpected star, coming off a very minimal pre-season that made many query if he could run out the game. 4 goals including 3 in a 10-minute purple patch the 3rd term that blew the game open, and a livewire at CHF.
Dean Terlich continued on from outstanding pre-season form that won him a spot in the league side. 3 goals including the very first of the season, and the sealer in the last. A very composed and mature performance for a debutant on the HFF.
Simon Phillips as per usual, nippy at the bottom of the packs, in everything, and unreliable with disposal. 1 goal. Also got reported for (I think) shouldering the head of an opponent smaller than him! Commentators thought there was little in it. (No pun intended.)
Matt Davis again as usual, solid, reliable, did the team things and was largely unspectactular off the HBF. Kicked a goal on the half-time siren, though.
Stephen Doyle played in the ruck. And he did not get injured. Let me repeat that. He. Did. Not. Get. Injured. Woo-hoo!

Only ex-Swan for the Maggies was James Meiklejohn, who in 2008 was one of the best ruckmen in the comp. Seemed reasonably tight between him and the Norwood rucks.

Finally, a use is found for Norwood.

An excuse for a Norwood thread I dont even remember Sam Rowe and Dean Terlich.

Rowe spent two years on the rookie list from 2006-7. He was a very creditable and consistent performer and in a weaker intake, might have earned a third year. (He was the same 'intake' as Flipper Phillips, Jack, Barlow and Simpkin and a large part of the reason why the Swans blitzed the ACT competition in those two years.)

Terlich was on last year's rookie list. Showed a few touches here and there, but was probably not in the running to get a second year. Life can be tough if you're rookie listed - draftees can get 3, sometimes even 4 years to show whether they have anything, but rookies generally need to catch the attention in just one season.

Simon - I heard talk that Aaron Bruce was following the ex-Swans mass relocation to the SANFL. Is this the case? Do you know what team he is with. Any updates on how he is going would be most appreciated.

Aaron Bruce is back with Eastlake in AFL Canberra.

Oh, and to complete the nostalgia about the 2008 delisted rookies, Matthew Beckmans is with Port Adelaide in the SANFL. I'm guessing he didn't play last night or would've earnt a mention from Simon.

Not named for their firsts nor their seconds, so I can only presume injured at the moment.

Looks like my mob (Bluebuoys) are probably set for a bit of a slide after Al Clarkson nabbed our coach from last year. Updates from my Bro at the Bay yesterday suggest the Bays will be smarting to atone from their GF defeat last year and will do well.
Back OT, we've got Scott McGlone who was named in our best.

                Any chance of semi-regular updates
                Simon?

Just looked through last week's results, Norwood lost 80-100 to Sturt

                Phillips kicked 2, Terlich 1
                Terlich named amongst the best.
Rowe and Matt Davis also played, but no Donkey Doyle.

Doyle didn't play. Injured(!), according to this story about a Port Power-listed Norwood player charged for urinating during the warmup (fined $100).

                    In the VFL,

Peter Faulks also played for the Scorpions.

Norwood went down to North Adelaide by 35 points. Rowe Phillips Terlich 1 goal each. Matt Davis played and Doyle returned.

Meiklejohn turned out for Port in their loss to the Eagles and was named in the best.
Josh Willoughby turned out for Glenelg and kicked a goal.
Matt Beckmans kicked 3 goals for the Port Magpies reserves. He kicked 2 goals the week before and was in the best then.

                      VFL
Wall and Faulks played for the Casey Scorpions, Wall getting into the best list yet again.
Saddington played for the Northern Bullants and kicked 3 goals! Woo go Saddo

I wonder if the club is remotely tempted to take another look at him. He's bulked up a bit since his time as a Swan (still skinny, but not as skinny) and is only just about to turn 22. He won Casey's B&F last year. Can't hurt to have spare talls.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
