Roos warns of Sydney "catastrophe"

No, the main point is that Western Sydney does not have a team to follow - so it IS a major problem that the Swans are an inaccessable and irregular product to them. That is the way they think about it. It is also the way people in Penrith and Blacktown think about Manly Sea Eagles in rugby league. Not relevant to them so they don't support them.
The Swans are the silvertails from the East to the West. Just like Easties hate travelling to the West, same applies.
We need a team for the West to relate to, to grow the game exponentially.
I know there are plenty of Swans supporters out West but I really can't wait to clash against a team whose supporters will rival Collingwood supporters (in appearance not numbers). Bring it on!
I guess this makes me an "inner city" snob?Last edited by pinkemu; 11 June 2009, 09:31 PM.Comment

My interpretation of this is that the club may soon need to ask for additional financial assistance from the AFL and they are setting the groundwork for the AFL not insisting they drastically cut-back their spending in order to qualify for that assistance (a condition that has been imposed on other clubs).
Restricting the amount of salary cap they can pay will limit their ability to go out and recruit a high-profile player to support the list when the veterans retire. And requiring a reduction in other football spending could have impacts on rookie lists, scholarship scheme, innovative injury management etc. All of which could impact the Swans' ability to remain competitive over the next few years.Comment

Saying that, The AFL may think they can get away with anything like the Swans did with memberships this year ( which would be part of the reason for the Swans now needing financial assistance)Comment

Your statements about the supposed appearance and motives of the new western Sydney team's supporters are nothing but the most ignorant prejudice. AFL supporters in Sydney per se have a completely different demographic and psychograhic profile to NRL supporters, regardless of the team. Our supporters who live out west are perfect examples of this.Comment

Sounds to me like the ACT will have its own team rather than having to share with Western Sydney. Oddly enough we have Swans on our coat of arms. I'm therefore am not sure what our mascot will be although the team will have blue and yellow for its colours.Comment

I totally agree with you on those that already exist.
What I was agreeing with (with my friend Bear of all animals) was the view that the market out west that are to be enticed are more tribal and would more likely appreciate something of their own than something that is 25 to 50 km's in an Eastern direction from them.
No ignorance or prejudice from this bird just the dream of some local rivalry.Comment

Western Sydney will never follow the East.
The West needs its own team.
A Western Sydney side will more than double the radio & newspaper coverage, with a game in town each week to cover AFL news.
The People in the West enjoy participating in good local products available.
If AFL is a great local product fans will be attracted.
As locals become the next superstars people will take notice.
I can't wait until Western Sydney has their own Lenny Hayes or Kieren Jack running around, now that will be a great time, when the local kids become the local sporting heroes
And the 15 million needed each year will come from where? Blacktown City Council? In case you haven't noticed there is a depression. Sporting sponsorship is being squeezed in the already most competative sporting market in the world. And if it is suggested that the Western Whatevers be financially supported by the AFL that is sheer irresponsibility. That money should go into the development of the grass roots game in NSW. If you want to join a club with an ethos of western toughness try the Bandidos.Bevo bandwagon driverComment

Trying to build on the Sydney v WCE rivalry perhaps? Or just a cheap copy of the Parramatta Eels."In some ways we?re less predictable to ourselves and sometimes that can be detrimental because we don?t really know where we?re going" - P.RoosComment

When even the western sydney NRL teams struggle for financial viability , I cant see how a new western sydney AFL team will get anywhere near the sponsorship support and membership required to be a viable entity.
If the AFL thinks this is a five year exercise then they are kidding themselves. This club needs to be put in place with the view that maybe in ten, fifteen of even twenty years time they may be able to stop propping it up.
I am not concerned so much that the new club will draw away swans supporters, more so that this club will be a little like the NRLs adeliade rams and WAs western reds . Here was a classic example of someone just forging into a market purely for the sake that there was a capital city with no NRL team. After hanging on life support for a number of years propped up by the leagues money , these teams were kindly euthanised and forgotten. I cant see how the western sydney team is any different to those teams . If the support isnt there it simply isnt there. Just because you put a team in , doesnt make people support the game.Comment
