He's one of our greats and I would be thrilled if the club could engineer a way for Barry to retire in a more dignified fashion. But sadly I think it's time for him to go.
It's not denial, It's another point of view.

2 of 23. He missed the maggot. Why should he retire? The competition rules deal with the infringement. The club should back its players. Our useless president should have been screaming the joint down over the lack of protection that the big bloke gets week after week from the umps. He has landed a zinger on the whiskers of a serial tormentor, missed Wakelin and hit Rutten with the softest jab ever thrown in the history of the sport. And this warrants retirement from a big hearted big man who has never shirked a contest or not played his guts out for the club? Players get suspended for breaches of the rules. Not compulsorarily retired by a bunch of ungrateful snipers (including his captain). How would you deal with Leigh Mathews? He has a criminal conviction for a brutal act of cowardice on a football field. They made him a Legend!

There is no problem with Barry smacking the odd player around the chops. Consecutive 50?s i have a problem with, that hurts the team, but a suspension here or there is the price you pay when you play on the edge. I wonder how many flags the hawks would have won had they taken the same approach with Brereton? Sacking Barry will not get him on the field any more, lets just enjoy it while we have him.

              Great post..
Just a side thought,If Barry played league he`d get a sin bin or penalty on the field and thats it..
Barry plays his heart out for the club ,his team mates......The Coach runs to the media before he even has a word with the big fella...

Surely Roosy and the leadership group should of fronted the media after the 05 prelim, and questioned Baz's desire to play. ..and then followed it up with forced retirement....The club seems to be struggling with it's own, rather than looking after them.

Hall says quitting the Swans an option!

Well Barry says he is ready to walk to continue his career.

Hall says quitting the Swans an option - RFNews - realfooty.com.au

I wonder how much of this is true. Is Barry trying to scare the Swans into action to keep him? It is getting to the point of no return between the two.

Or do we wish him bon voyage and move on with the list?

I wish quitting the Swans was an option for me...make the next 10 years easier to withstand.

Sydney Swans FC can not afford to hibernate or hide away from media!

Roos is smart enough to use it as subtle motivation. Also kKeep the AFL & club & media satisfied...without divulging much that Hall did not already know or ought have known.

I don't earn nearly as much as him pa. Nor do I earn it "in the public eye" as an entertainer. However I know several who do and are , and they often get grilled on 7.30 report, lateline, 4Corners, ACA etc for their job "stuff ups"..real or not!

It's OK...you are forgiven....netball is a much more bitchin hard game than footy these days. I can see why you have sympathy...didn't they ask you to explain it on TV?... but you won't ever do it again will you??????
I'm so relieved that you have forgiven me - I will sleep better knowing that!

However - did anyone notice on last nights news how the ARU handled sacking Lote Tuquiri?? If John O'Neill is capable of saying those two effective little words "no comment" then why cant Roos and Kirk??? and the more the idiot reporters pressed for answers the firmer O'Neill got - so its not impossible.

But what I am finding puzzling is that some have mentioned that Hall has let Kirky down - does this mean that the Swans it just all about Kirky and how he feels and no one else?

Very good point - I have seen far worse incidents on the league field. Mind you if Razor Ray was umpiring and there was a sin bin in AFL - the revolving door of the sinbin would be going full tilt all game, no team would have 18 players on the pitch at any one time.

After the best footballer of the twentieth century has committed an assault and battery and a head case had been reported on multiple occasions this is how Alan Jeans one of the greatest coaches of the modern era condemned violence in the sport, defended his own integrity but refused to publicly give up one of his players - the AFL Legend.

Basically Jeans said that he instructed his players not to fight, had a responsibility to the game, condemned coaches that used unethical tactics and tried to take advantage of the no fight policy but refused to condemn publicly his players. Hafey did the same. And the game has not changed that much that a coach and captain should hamg a team mate out to dry. They dealt with it behind the dressing shed door.

Hafey also backed up Jacko even when he was reported too.

Jeans also comes out having a go at the commentators for bringing up the past, the VFL for trying to outlaw the style he has instilled at Hawthorn. Won't be drawn on the incident, just that the integrity of the game is paramount.

Roos could learn a lot about dealing with the press by watching this video, as could Captain Smirk.
