Bear, may I suggest you turn to a different past time, and stop watching the Sydney Swans. If you can't get ANY positive response to the Swan's performance against St Kilda, you obviously aren't enjoying your footy.

That's probably my biggest frustration from last night. Not that we lost, not that we missed gettable shots at goal, but that we seem to play at the intensity levels of our opponents rather than coming out switched on week in week out.

That's been the case for many a year though, including during our "glory years". When you've got a game plan that relies so heavily on hard work and intensity (to make up for a relative lack of skill) I guess it is difficult to sustain it when it's not needed.

Agreed that it's been the case over a number of years, but I guess the difference here for me was that in games with more riding on them than last night over the past few years (eg Elim final v Collingwood 2007), we haven't shown the same intensity. Which says to me that it's something slightly different to being just a mindset of getting up for big games. So why could we do it last night but not in other games?

I stood and clapped them off at half time and stood, cheered and sang the song as they left the field at full time.

I am a football fan that applauds a good, hard, well fought out contest and that is EXACTLY what I got (against all likelihood) last night.

You, my friend, are the "fair weather" supporter if you cannot appreciate that game and that effort.

I think a few are mixing up lack of consistency with lack of effort. They are two very different things. Old bodies simply cannot go full bore 100%, week after week. Young players will naturally have ups and downs as they learn the game. With the team structure as it is now, overloaded with the aging and the inexperienced, it would be very surprising if the team was consistent. This week?s game showed what we are capable of when the team is ?on?. Those expecting that level of performance week after week with the structure of the team we have are deluding themselves.

The positives I took home were the quite dramatic improvement of Reg and the Cheese over the latter part of this season, the almost seamless way that Nick Smith has integrated himself into the top twenty two, the promise of big Mocca at full forward, the steady progress of Jack and Bird and the emergence of Dan Hannebury as a gun midfielder of the future. Those blokes potentially represent one third of our team for the next ten years. Add Dan Currie and Veszpremi to make half the run on team.

I?m proud that our club is rejuvenating itself with five rookies, an ex basketballer, two under age speculators and a first round pick. I?m proud that our club is well on track to refute the popular Melbourne fallacy that a club has to bottom out for three or four years to guarantee future success.

This is the most idiotic post this year and in the age of Connolly that's saying something. I stood and applauded at half time because I witnessed a side busting a gut out there and did what humans do and showed appreciation for their efforts. How dare you demean the Sydney crowd and the team you follow with this rubbish.

So in the end, it was an exciting game to watch, with a disappointing end.
The perception of "we did our best, it was a good loss" doesn't wash with me.

Maybe I'm reading more into your post than you intended but are you saying that winning is the only time you feel pride in this team.

Not at all.
I am proud of the team every week.
I think there are a lot of people here who slam the team for 'half hearted efforts' and 'not really trying' who have no idea of what goes on inside the football club.
Every player puts in all they have every week.
Sometimes they get more out of themselves than others.
Sometimes players just don't have enough in them to compete effectively (LRT)
But they give it their all.
I doubt the players sat around last night and slapped each other on the back and said "well done mate, we almost made it"
They would have sat around and hung their heads like they would after any other loss.
They aren't 'proud' of almost winning, but they are proud of the effort that they and their team mates put in, as they are every week.
I am proud of the effort each of them puts in every week, but i don't see any sense of pride in almost winning a game

I have no greater or less sense of pride in the players this week than I have any other week.

The general vibe of this thread is that the players 'really tried' this week and we all should be proud of that.

You hang your head when you are giving up.
Not hanging their heads in not something to be proud of.

We didn't deserve to beat the top team.
We deserved to be absolutely pumped by the top team based on this years form.
However we made less skill errors, had less brain farts and the match ups worked.
This equated to a close game, just as it did in round 1, and we nearly won.

I am disappointed that we didn't win, but I would have been disappointed with a draw as well.
The game was there to be won, and the Saints managed to get the goal, good on them, that's why they'll most likely win the flag.

As I said, I am no more or less proud of yesterdays performance than any other performance.
I am however, happy to see so many positive signs for the future, and players developing so well.
The light at the end of the tunnel got a bit brighter for me last night.

So, even before the ball was bounced, you believe we don't deserve to win and that we should get pumped, yet you can't be proud that they believed they deserved to win?
