Shows how grand we think Magic is.

(Boo hoo. Please Mick ... one more year!!)

Just back home after a weekend away. What a weekend! Loved the win, loved Kirk raising the team, Goodes lifting for his mate, Micky kicking two goals.

And the Tiges for their grace in the presentation to Magic at the end.

There's a lot to look forward to in the way Goodes passed off to Cheese. He had a shocker so it was great to see Goodes do his best to bring him back into the game, the team and the celebrations - and for Cheese to acknowledge all that with that wry smile.

To top off the weekend, when I got to Mascot on Saturday, all the boys were there waiting for their flights. MO'L was in the Hungry Jack's team and Goodes was over at the Healthy Wok (or something like that). I managed to wish MO'L all the best and he seemed genuinely stunned by all the good wishes he's received. As they walked to the flight a 5yo boy called out "Go Swans". Gotta love this city and this team.

Also, there's was a key difference between this bad game and his previous bad games: even though he won very little of the ball, he chased hard, tackled hard (5 tackles), and generally just put in effort all day. It didn't work for him, it just wasn't his day, but the intensity was there, which in previous games where he's gone missing, it hasn't been. He also ran very hard to kick his goal. And the thing I liked about that goal was the celebration afterwards: he gave a wry smile as he jogged back. He knew he'd had a dog of a day, but he didn't drop his head. He had a brief laugh at himself and got back into it.

I'm going to say it now, I'm a Barlow fan. I'm not completely convinced he's going to make it, but I want him to, because he's got talent, and he's showing a lot of improvement. He'll get another game next week, and hopefully he'll bounce back.
I'll have to take your word for it. He's been worse than ordinary whenever I've seen him play live in Melbourne. Yes he ran hard yesterday, but (repeating myself) he looked like a headless chook not knowing what to do or where to go.

He must save his better performances for the games televised on Fox, which I generally don't get to see.

            Totally agree.

He has had some "stats" but that is virtually irrelevant in modern day football if you don't do the hard defensive things. He allows his direct opponent to get easy possessions in contested situations - the key to modern football.
Would not get a run in Ross Lyon's team.

He IS a headless chook who gets some easy link-up possessions and "looks good" in full flight as he has been given an athletic physique... but is not a thinker.

Is still very much a project player with a hell of a lot of improvement required.

Had to follow the game on my mobile via the minute by minute commentary service whilst playing golf with my nephew at a promised game at Coffs Harbour. A significant milestone made truly memorable by the team's effort and resolve. Magic will never forget it. Willl watch it when I get home tomorrow.
Bad luck about McVeigh. Should be able to cover him next Sat nite, Cats will getting jittery.

Just watched the end of the game again ... how was Kirky running in for a hug ... for a second there, I'm sure he was going in for the pash!!

Ch7 switches to five minutes of ads just after MickyO finishes talking to the boundary guy who is not Colby, then show 2 seconds of Mick being carried off the gound by his mates.

Then they talk crap for three minutes (except the bit where they say how fabulous Goodesy is) then another five minutes of ads, then half the club song.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

CH7 is very good at missing the moment.

When will David Scwarz get Jessie White's name right. 2 games now he has called him Jessie Smith and I reckon once a couple of weeks ago they called Nick White. And did I pick up Jack for Hannebery. And people call for these blokes to give Brownlow votes, strewth.

                      (Not to mention David Schwarz).
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I will hand one thing to this post, he really does LOOK like a headless chook when he plays. He really doesn't look or move like a footballer. Regardless of whether he's playing well or poorly, he slouches as he runs, tucks his arms up to his chest t-rex style, making him look like the fat kid at school trying to run the 800m race at the school carnival, he's physically as straight as a ruler, with pale, skinny little legs and absolutely no butt, always looks hesitant and like he's about to flinch (whether or not he actually does, he hasn't been recently), and he's ugly as @@@@ to boot.

Cheese needs to have a few words and a few gym sessions with ROK. He's quick, he's tall, he's fit, he's strong, he's a good kick (when he kicks through the ball), and he's not nearly as afraid of the tough stuff as he looks, at least not any more. But he really doesn't look like a footy player. He needs to get to the gym and do some leg weights, squats, work on his core strength and leg power, and most of all, he needs to learn to swagger. So much of this game is psychological. Half the reason Carey was the player he was was because people looked at him, saw his complete confidence in his own ability and disdain for any defender that went near him, and thought "@@@@ this bloke is good". He'd win half the battle before the game had started. I'm not saying Barlow is comparable with Carey, but if he could get a fraction of visual expression of arrogance that a bloke like Carey had, or even ROK, then he might start to cause some concern for his opponents.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

We didn't get any of that from 7 Melb, they finished the broadcast right at the end of the game. Didn't get the interview, didn't get the carry off. But then I was there in person, I'm sure Micky saw me and threw me a kiss and we did get to see him and Kirky at the aftermatch. *Sigh*
