Was Sydney playing? With Tim Lane commentating it was hard to tell, seemed to Carlton and no one else?

I actually thought the commentary was great, they focused a lot on the new swans players and when they bagged Carlton they took the time to give credit to the Swans.
I thought Grundy, Richards, LRT (when he came on), Malceski and Kennelly were all solid - great and they, along with the pressure around the ground on carlton when carlton had the ball is what set up the win. Some of the time the delivery into the forward line was pretty good but too often it was too crowded in there and we didn't really get to see enough of what TDL and Currie could do.
Jetta has to play Rd 1. Rohan too - it may cost us a game or two but I want to see him develop in the firsts not in Canberra. His flair and strength and tackling and even his enthusiastic body language not to mention his fans around the ground evidenced by the signs (fanta pants, bye barry hello gary).
I was very impressed with McGlynn and want him in the team. He is a tough nut - witness him crashing headfirst into a pack early on - and gets heaps of the ball. We need that in the team for balance I think even if his disposal isn't great all the time.
Back to Jetta and Rohan, their long passes to teammates were excellent, how great to have first year players who are fast and can kick long and accurately.
I loved Bevan in the first quarter, he rides the heaviest of bumps and stays on his feet. In the last quarter (I think) when he gave away a free kick for high tackle I was less rapturous but still think he is a must in the team (ie hard nuts bevan and mcglynn mixed with the speedster excitement machines).
Seaby did a couple of nice things, especially that flying spoil which probably saved a certain mark and goal.
Kennedy didn't star much so can't offer much of an opinion. TDL kicked a nice goal and I think will have much better games this pre-season, based solely on this game not in the best 22 but obviously you can't judge on just one game.
I'm not sold on O'Dwyer - gets the ball a lot but turned it over a fair bit too. I just don't see him getting a game ahead of veszpremi, meredith, hannebury etc. Look forward to eating humble pie on that one.Comment

What I liked is that the timing improved as the game progressed and the mishmash of the first quarter and most of the second started to get a rythm to it.
Impressed by Bird. Playing like he knows his strengths.
Mal - welcome back.
Gary R - I think we got a good one here; tackles were very tight. OK, is it going to be Fanta or Tang. Tang is my choice, sharp, and carries well = TangTangTang.
Lewis J - WELL! What a good idea someone had when they picked him up0! Best of all he had a smile and enjoyed himself.
Tadgh - well the supply was mostly in the forward line so we didn't see much of the backline in motion.
McGlynne - fine by me, we'll keep him.
Mumford sitting in the stands - he is a monster.
Cuz - about time kiddo, keep going.
Bev - I like Bevo - he looked comfortable and not stressed, and he rode that massive bump, we need this, they can't all be Schtars!!
Kirky - made the silly ass pay for being rude; and then made him pay again by chasing him for a handshake after the game. Learn a lesson from this children - do not be rude to the nice man of the game. It will be subtle but he will make you feel like a dill.

The irony shouldn't escape anyone that Kirk had a bolter while McLean finished with 4 handballs and a kick.
McGlynn is going to give Moore and Bevan real headaches to get into the 22. They all play similar roles but McGlynn just looked HUNGRY and as if he had a real point to prove - the way a tough nut should play. While Jetta provided the fireworks McGlynn made my night with his performance on the forward flanks.
It was a real scrap, which was to be expected I guess given the new blood, but it was acceptable overall. I believe it was Walls (yeah yeah, I know) who pointed out in the 3rd Quarter that Carlton was close to full-strength while Sydney was missing 5 or 6 players who would be in the starting 22, especially up forward. That fact made the game very pleasing to witness as it shows that there will be real depth in the Squad this year, and if nothing else should provide a good showing in Canberra.
And it was kind of fun to hear Walls and Lane bemoan that it would be a long year for Carlton, then to have Quartermain chide them for ignoring the improving Swans.10100111001 ;-)Comment

Imagine when we hit our straps in this area which means our wide guys are not sucked in to flood...........we will kill it with our flankers !!
I love my footy team and who cares if they loose the first 3 games of the season as this team will build and build thru this season !

I like Tim Lane, .....he always points out the Tasmanians. He also has a well modulated voice and quite a lot of knowledge. He is not Cometti as he is in a league of his own.
I find it easy to forgive the Carlton bias as I imagine how it would be for me to comment a Swans game and stay unbiased.
I laughed at his comparison of the game last week he commentated in Launceston with its 5 minute walk from the hotel to the ground and this week's $105 taxi fare. (Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire a car?)"The Dog days are over, The Dog days are gone" Florence and the MachineComment

And you have to wonder why Mattner called for the hand pass outside 50 then kicked across goal to a pack of players. I would think everyone watching thought he was going to have a shot. Another stat perhaps. Should have had a go yourself Dan.
I thought Currie lacked a bit of confidence and oomph. Certainly was a fine mark. Lets hope he grows in stature in the pre season and I hope they keep playing him.Comment

I, too, have awoken with excitement in the belly (or I'm hungry!) the skills, pace and committment on show from the neo-bloods is still fresh in my mind.
I just have a point to add to the 'rustiness' comments - it looked rather humid in blacktown last night with some dew in the air and on the surface. I reckon this contributed to at least some of the dropped marks. It is pleasing to think perhaps that there is less improvement needed by us as a game in dryer conditions will show we're doing well in that area. Craig Bolton and Martin mattner just don't usually drop marks!!!
Jetta and Rohan should start in the best 22 come round 1.
Going to be a big year for malhairski this year, did anyone else notice his new style? I.e. Actually has hair.Comment

Carlton flooded the corridor and I think that is why we handballed so much around midfield. They seemed to have a stack of players on their offensive sode of the circle to block and stop our run. On the handshake bit, if you saw Sheahan's interview of Kirk and the outstanding understanding of leadership by Kirky, you can see the stark difference as to why one is successful and one is an abject failure.
Probably they both have the same amount of speed, you could agrue Mclean has equal skill, but above the shoulders McLean misses out big time. If McLean doesn't realise this quick smart he will be on AFL's scrap heap in 2 years.Comment
