Let's face it, we blew it, we should have taken Rioli with that pick, not Vesz.
I get the feeling he will never be the player we hope him to be, our recruiters should have nightmares about this one.
Pick 11 - Patick Veszpremi
Pick 12 - Cyril Rioli
Pick 13 - Brad Ebert
Pick 14 - Jack Grimes
Pick 17 - Harry Taylor
Pick 23 - Tayte Pears
I would take anyone of those ahead of Pat.Comment

I don't subscribe to this theory...the draft is littered with 100s of, 'we should have' picks. There were 50 odd clubs before us that could have picked Adam Goodes as an example. It can be very hit and miss.Let's face it, we blew it, we should have taken Rioli with that pick, not Vesz.

Way, way too early to make those calls. You cannot make any definative assessment for at least 5 or 6 years.
Many, many discussions on this board re: taking McVeigh in front of Salopek all those years back. Things were certainly looking grim a few years in (as we are with the group listed above) and I doubt anybody would have McV above Salopek at that stage.
Now it's a no-brainer. Salopek is a good solid player, but McVeigh is now a B&F winner and a very, very good midfielder.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

There were suggestions at the time that Rioli made it clear to some non-Melbourne clubs that he would be very reluctant to move from Victoria.
Ebert doesn't do too much for me at the moment - he is solid and competent but a bit vanilla.
Grimes is a very good player for his age, though also a tad vanilla-ish.
If we had recruited Taylor, is is likely he would have kept Reg out of the team and thus prevented Reg from establishing his credentials as a potential key defender. Given how long Reg had been on the list, would he have survived? Quite probably not, so we wouldn't be that much better off than we currently are.
Pears may not have kept Reg out of the team because he was younger and less developed than Taylor. So he might genuinely have added to our key defender depth.
As TripleB points out though, these kids are still in the infancy of their careers. Vez certainly has talent and certainly possesses some of the x-factor that we're still a bit light on for in the senior team.Comment

Patty was a boom or bust pick, similar to Rohan, but it is way, way, way too early to tell. He's 20 and missed a massive chunk of time last year due to injury, and that was a contact injury (finger)? In all honesty, and this is an absurd statement I'm sure but not at all a one-eyed fan thing, I'm far from 100% convinced that Cyril is a better player than Patty.Let's face it, we blew it, we should have taken Rioli with that pick, not Vesz.

Of that list the one guy I'd take right now over him is Harry Taylor, but over the course of a career I'm not even sure about that. Patty has something, those other guys all do in their own way, but to me Patty has soooooooooooooomething.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

Taylor is definitely flattered by a fantastic team around him and you could almost say same of Rioli in 2008.
Patty is smoulderingly HOT and if it's one thing the Swans need it is a replacement for Jonny Stevens and Brad Seymour.Comment

I think that is a little harsh on Taylor, but I'd only take him right now to slot into the team- and that's just because I think he's a very good player. I think long term Patty has the biggest chance to be a matchwinner of the lot.
With Gary and Patty I think we have 2 legit potential gamebreakers, if both of them turn out... then... wow...I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
