The winner of the 2010 grand final is...the MCG

I agree with your position on this for the Grand Final.
However, you cannot just keep going with replay upon replay if (in the unlikely event) no-one manages to secure a win the second week around. It would still be a war (in AFL terms) - two huge battles in successive weeks and then extra time (they would never have a penalty shoot-out). That is about as big as it gets in sporting competitions.
There is a heap of pressure being put on the AFL now in regards to this rule, so I wouldn't be surprised if they changed it - but I hope they don't.
In another thread, somewhere around here, someone suggested they should give premiership medallions to all the players who played for that team during the season (which I think is a great idea - or alternatively, for normal GF years the club should have victory medals made for their entire playing list). However, this becomes more pertinent with changes to the two teams of Collingwood and St Kilda for next week. If a player misses next week through injury and their team gets up, I hope he is still involved on match day (victory stand, etc).Comment

Sure it would be exciting but AFL grand finals are a war of attrition and wars are never decided by penalty shootouts. If no one wins the battle you retreat, lick your wounds, bury the dead (Leon Davis) and get ready to charge in again. This is a tough sport, it should stay that way.Last edited by Xie Shan; 26 September 2010, 06:42 PM.Comment

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

I agree, but no-one is saying that the grand final should be decided by a penalty shoot-out, just that we should have had extra time yesterday. If the scores are still deadlocked after a period of extra time, say 5-10 minutes each way (extremely unlikely as this is not soccer), then I don't mind the replay to be fair to both teams as at least both would have been given ample opportunity to win it on the day.Comment

My BIG picture view is that everyone wins out of a replay. The AFL, MCG, club merchandise, the players get paid more, the umps get paid again, the workers at the G get another big pay day, more members get to see a GF, the public get to see another GF on the telly, another round of BBQ's with more snags and grog bought, grass roots footy gets another spin off, off season one week shorter, wall to wall footy chat for another week on radio, Gold Coast and GWS get funded in one hit, Premier Cricket in Melbourne don't have to play round 1 on under prepared grounds due to the wet winter, it's school holidays still in Melbourne so the kids have another week to soak up the tradition and culture etc, etc, etc. Bring it on.Comment

Al you know we agree with most things, but not this. The biggest problem with extra time IMO is that if one side has a number of injured players (read 2 or 3) that can't return to the field, then they are at a distinct advantage.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

What happens if after 2 extra quarters it's still a draw?? Do we lower our game to soccer rules and have a 5 goal shoot out?? God I hope not. The golden goal they use in rugby is no good to us as one side would be kicking with the wind. Nar we have have another game with 22 fit players per team. Besides that I have been told that the extra game is worth $25 000 000 to the A.F.L. not a bad windfall to share amongst the teams.Comment

I wouldn't have thought that the wind would even make that much difference in an AFL grand final considering they are played at the MCG, which due to its size and structure just makes the breeze swirl in any old direction providing no real advantage one way or the other.Comment

I think the plus for the Swans (and the rest of the comp) is that both of these teams will have one less week of prep work before next season..Comment
