Listened to a gentleman who ran AFL Queensland up in Cairns on the radio this afternoon. Naturally enough, most of the focus on was on footy in north Queensland but the subject of academies was brought up and paraphrasing his response:
Academies are essential to get the game in to the hearts and minds of the community
They get the kids involved in the game
They get the best athletes into the game
They give the kids a pathway to play at the highest level
And finally, essential for the development of the game in the region.

Interesting article in this morning's Melbourne Age about some of the kids we're most likely to draft over the next few years.
They compare Isaac Heeney to Steele Sidebottom and Callum Mills to Sam Mitchell.

I'd be disappointed if Heeney didn't exceed Sidebottom...think he's something special. The fact that Mills could be even better again is scary,

Yeah you'd hope from the hype he would be a much better player than Sidebottom

Eddie McGuire is not the only person to have begun grumbling about how blessed Sydney is to have Isaac Heeney on the way as a first-round draft pick.

Imagine finishing on top of the ladder, winning the premiership and getting the first, second or third best kid in the draft for pick 18, and you?ll understand why the other clubs are so angst-ridden, particularly when Callum Mills, on his way next year, could be even better.

The years we deliver a genuine first round draft pick will be relatively rare.

And even if Mills is that great, then another club will probably get Dunkley who otherwise wouldn't.

There is no point at all having this system if it isn't allowed some success

Just wondering with Ted getting closer towards retirement would Joel be a worthy edition next year as back up and or as a player that could take over in 2016ish ?

I remember we all chatted about this last draft and he has to be getting closer to a chance with a team like the Swans and with Gretel and Kurt living up in Sydney

From the AFL website. Looks like they are already looking at the bidding system for F-S and the Academies. Reckon the Mills/Dunkley quinella next year is dead :-(

"Fundamentally, McLachlan says the academy system is a critical part of supporting and growing the AFL. "I support the academy system," he said. "I've said that publicly and I've also said we're going to review the bidding system that applies to father-son as well". "We need more talented athletes coming out of NSW and Queensland and the academies are starting to be successful".

"We also have to make sure that's not at the expense of on-field equity". "The appropriate way to look at that is through the review of the way the bidding system works."

I have no drama with us giving up one of those picks should another club deem our "discard" player worth a first round pick.

We should have a priority pick before Round 1 and Round 2 of any players available to us from the Academy of F/S. The benefit to other clubs should this happen is that one of these platers will be available for other clubs, a player that would not be available without our Academy system.

This is a balanced solution that we can still extract real benefits but on a fair basis

It would be an absolute disgrace if the AFL prevented us from getting Dunkley and Mills.

It would have the appearance, and probably be in fact, a total caving in to cry baby Eddie. We might as well hand Eddie the AFL supremo job.

It will look as if any change made to the bidding system was specifically targeting this particular favourable situation for the Swans. I think they will have to let this one go through and perhaps modify the bidding situation in later years.

There will be other academy players for other clubs that will be pre-selected as well. Are they going to only target the Swans academy or will there be a change for all?

The Bulldogs were able to get 2 FS selections in Wallis and Liberatore in one year will modest draft picks 22 and 41, well below their value. Again, are the Swans being targeted because of our success or is the AFL trying to achieve a fair system? No rule changes for those 2.

I don't think a new bidding system will preclude nominating academy and FS players, but rather trying to bring a fairer compensation system so clubs will be forced to fork up something closer to fair value. But it's hard to see how that could happen. Perhaps if their are bids for 2 nominated players made before a club's first pick, the club will be forced to give up pick 3 in addition to picks 1 and 2 if they want both players.

The system only seems unfair when their is a confluence of several unlikely events, including having 2 or more first round rated players accruing to the benefit of a club that has finished near the top of the ladder in that particular year of the draft.

As an example, suppose that a similar situation occurred with 2 FS picks that would be available to St Kilda in the period when the were in GFs, and were denied access to those players. What would be said now given their current situation. St. Kilda would be crying out for some special compensation pick. It can be hard to see how things might unfold in a few years hence.

Hopefully the AFL will think this situation through thoroughly and not just react to an unusual situation when a few young players with potential will become available to the Swans on a somewhat favourable basis. Despite the hype, there is certainly no guarantee that any of them will become elite AFL players. There are plenty of examples of highly touted players like Jack Watts and Xavier Ellis, to name just a couple, who are okay players, but never reached the potential of their high draft pick.

I doubt sacrificing our third round pick in addition to our first two would be enough to placate Eddie and his sycophants. I fear it will come down to having to choose between Dunkley and Mills

I doubt they would make us forgo one. I think the solution is most likely a cap on academy numbers, I.e. 2 only
