Kirk was - he was a rookie.
Malceski, Schneider, O'Keefe, Smith, Bevan, Kennelly, Grundy, Jack are all examples of players who have give us good value who were taken after pick 50 in the main draft, plus Jolly, Mattner, McGlynn and Mumford all started their careers at other clubs after being taken with similarly low (rookie draft) picks. Any other club could come up with a similar list of quality players taken after number 50 in the ND.
That said, I agree with the premise of your post - the chances of getting a good player at pick 73 are very low, and clubs land up going through a large number to unearth the gems they do find.Last edited by liz; 23 November 2010, 03:11 PM.Comment

For bonus points, work out which players have had successful careers being selected after pick 50 in the rookie draft.Comment

I know Jack and McGlynn were the last two rookies selected in their rookie draft excluding the zone picks (the same one but I always get confused with the year which the AFL uses to label the rookie draft).
I think Reg was a 4th round rookie pick, so he was probably beyond 50 also.Comment

Jack should have been a NSW zone selection but due to his stuff-up he had to be available to all the clubs before he could have been selected.
I just looked up Reg's bio, he was pick 42 in the 2005 rookie draft.Comment

Didn't Glen Campbell name his 13th album after it?.
"Ulverstone" is the title of a 1969 song written by Jimmy Webb and popularized by Glen Campbell. The song describes a soldier waiting to go into battle who thinks of the woman he loves and his hometown of Ulverstone: "I still hear your sea waves crashing/as I watch the cannons flashing/ I clean my gun/And dream of Ulverstone."
They don't write songs like that anymore. I wonder if Justin Bieber could record it?In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Judging by the photos of the boxing session, unlike a lot of midfield draftees Luke Parker's size and build won't be a hurdle in him playing senior football next yearComment

I am wondering if the selectors think Spanger will be a late developer? He has the endurance & the stopping power but as has been recorded here many times his disposal leaves a lot to be desired. But in saying that the coaches can work with him on this problem as they have last year with Teddy's decision making & wasn't he a revelation when given a bit of responsibility & specialist coaching. I am very excited with the other picks as they have good wraps on them & are going to strengthen our depth even more. Lamb is apparently a big talent in the johnston mould, Parker like Bartell or Hodge & Alex Johnson is a very versatile big man. I remember Richmond had one of those who played wing, CHF & HB & the Hawks had Andy Gowers 6'6" on a wing. Oh what joy to see a big guy who is ultra quick as they say this bloke is. This would be the first time since the Barry Round era, surely, that we have had 15 substantial talls to pick from, again what joy, I remember when we had to play short blokes on monsters. Remember Leo on Gerrig & C Bolts on Riewoldt & they were our tall defenders at barely 6'1". Lovely to have lots of guys 191cm & above.Comment
