Should I (we) go to cheer the Swans over Collingwood?

Just a yank with the Wife on holiday in Sydney later this month, meeting up with oldest Son on R&R from the 'War on Terror" in the Arabian peninsula area.

Ran into a nice Aussie bloke and his wife at a jazz club a few weeks ago in Honolulu, he was a sportsman type, and highly recommended that we check out a major sporting event while down under, as part of the ovarall down under experience.

I love American football, having gone to numerous college and pro games, so would we get a hoot out of watching the Swans?

If so, any tips on how to select tickets for the stadium, what to wear/do/not do, are appreaciated.

Oh, and staying at the Circular Quay - best method to get to/from the game??

    Good Day, Mates?

You're more than welcome to come along and cheer the Sydney Swans against Collingwood. It's always a big game, and we haven't beaten them for 6 years, so we need all the help we can get!

It will be easy for you to get to the venue. Just get the train from Circular Quay to Central; then from Central to Olympic Park Station. You'll be able to check out the Olympic Park Precinct on the night, which was the site of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

See if you can get a ticket on Level 4 at ANZ Stadium; that's generally has the best views.

Make sure you wear something red and white!

Hope you enjoy your trip "down under".

Thanks! We'll more than likely check it out.

What sort of Red and White apparel is considered appropriate?

We're looking forward to hanging out down there, probably kick back and have one or three pints from time to time.

Just to clarify mate it's G'day and we have Schooners not pints. Hope you enjoy your trip.

My recommendation for the Collingwood game is that Level 1 in the Red Zone is where you'll get the best atmosphere.

Also get yourself a Swans scarf from one the merchandise vans outside the ground so you'll look the part and will be a good souvenir.

Definitely go to the Swans vs Collingwood. If we win, you'll hear the stadium absolutely explode. It will be massive. If Collingwood win, you'll at least get to see the best team in the competition doing what they do best.

Welcome - you'll enjoy the game and it will be a blast if the Swans win - or even get close. Make sure you dress warmly - it can get darn cold out there on a winter's night. So anything red and white and warm would be suitable - if you're from Honolulu it might seem darn cold so be prepared with several layers....

I'd also suggest the Red Zone for atmosphere, and look out for the merchandise stands both outside and inside the stadium. Also I'm sure you'll find a few fans nearby that can help with explaining what goes on if you need a few pointers....

Strangely enough the last game at ANZ we had an American gentleman sitting behind us-he was is Sydney on business for a week and had been told in the States that the one thing he must do whilst in Sydney was go to a Swans game.
It took him a while to pick up what was happening but by the end of the third he was yelling along with the best of us. Enjoyed himself tremendously

G'day Random Yank. Yes, do come along and enjoy the night - much better live than on TV.

Looks like being quite an international night, as I will be taking 2 Swedes, 1 Italian and 1 Canadian. The Swedes have been before, are hooked and now plan their trips accordingly, to fit in at least one match!

Can anyone confirm for our visitors' benefit that the Ticketek tickets will give them a free ride on the train?
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

                          yes, that's true

I'm kind of hoping we lose this one because I'm not going to be there! for the second year in a row my friend is having a birthday party on the same night

I went with my son to a Collingwood game a couple of years ago, and he brought a number of people from his office - 2 Yanks, 1 Japanese, 1 Pom amongst them. Apart from the loss (again) it was a terrific night, and I really enjoyed giving them the benefit (?) of my advice. The Collingwood ferals do make plenty of noise, and are an entertainment in themselves.

For our visitor's benefit, seeing a game live is definately superior to watching on TV. In 'our' game it is about where the ball is going next (not where it is now), and seeing the movement of players off the ball getting to positions to receive (or defend) is what makes the action so intense. It is like Ice Hockey in that respect, and similarly the direction of the next play is not set by any offside rule or time constraint in getting to a score.

All tickets should include free public transport, from memory.

Hope it's an enjoyable night, Random Yank. Get involved and try to keep up
