Watching the game yesterday I was as frustrated with the kicking as everyone else but thinking about it afterwards I reckon that we did pretty good in every department apart from the shots at goal. Any game where you get 30 shots on goal is a good game and considering the conditions we did pretty darn well.

I am not a fan of the way Jetta is playing, he has so much potential with his speed as we have seen but he is not using it, when he gets the ball in a mark he just stops and props. with his speed he should take on the opposition at every opportunity. His defensive work is pretty much half hearted as he rarely uses his pace to catch an opponent, mostly just lopes along. I think he needs a break in the twos so he realises that his position is not a given.

One other frustration is how little we play on. There were so many opportunities to play on and put Richmond under the pump yesterday but we just stopped and waited for them to mark their men and then did our one up small passes. We have a good running team who can play flowing football but we rarely do so.

I think we need to put Jetta in the context of a few other players

maybe lets compare Jetta vs Betts vs Rioli - not great comparisons but hey lets start somewhere

Jetta its only in his second year of AFL ie 31 games........Betts is 24 and has had 131 games plus 6 pre seasons which really do count for any player, but I think for indigenous players who have so much flair and creativity they generally need to re learn how to play in a Senior level structure........ie at local level they were standouts and had a licence to roam and be free but in Senior footy it doesnt work that way

Senior level football is deep practice for the creative players.............AJ is a great example of a player that has played with discipline all his life so can fit in just like that.................Jetta is a great example of player that has not had to play with discipline

we have got Jetta to here and that is way better the parts of last year............now like alot of players developing they plateau for a little while then hopefully rise up again

Cyril Rioli now 72 games and starting to become an absolute weapon in attack as well as great defender.................now I am not saying Jetta is in Cyrils class nor Betts but Jetta can keep improving.............he is having to player a lot tougher role then what Betta and Rioli have been given to date...............after 11 rounds he only appears to be getting his fitness to where it needs to be for midfield rotation

we just started to see Lewis get more forward time the last couple of weeks and he is dangerous in the right conditions

One of my questions is can we carry TDL and Jetta and Rohan ? as they are developing?

or a better question - Can our game plan be adapatable enough without Lewis's leg speed..............ie we invested in speed so we can adjust our game plan when needed....... ie so we can isolate clearances etc with superior leg speed running past and driving it forward fast which in 2009 we couldnt

I think in any team there are certain players you invest in and keep tinkering until they get there because the gold at the end of the rainbow is the difference between 5th and or seriously competing for no.1 !

Its the edge of a knife and maybe our few young ones are rising up as we need them to............AJ is.........Sam Reid is..........Jetta slowly.............and others we know can fill in at any time........ie Sumner, Parker, Nipper, Heath, Rohan, Meredith, Andrejs etc

          That is serious depth !

I have to say I didn't enjoy watching that game one bit. Yes, we won, but we should have absolutely creamed them with the number of shots we had. If we are that in accurate in the next two weeks we will get annihalated (apologies for the bad spelling).

Relieved we won because accuracy aside, we simply deserved the reward for our best four quarter effort of the year. So much to like about yesterday, but boy we need a few hours in front of goal haha

Do we have a goal kicking coach? If we do he needs to be fired. If we don't he needs to be found. That was hilarious.

In terms of stats we had the same kind of dominance we had over Brisbane; if we'd been accurate the margin would have also been similar.

The kicking wasn't that bad in the circumstances. The commentators were saying that the winds were swirling. That's why both sides only kicked 9 goals. Yes we should have kicked more, but we won. Next weeks under the roof will be a little different.

Yes correct. The misses were shanks as people at the game have noted. They were not nice looking kicks which the wind blew away from centre, they were no way near centre!
To me too many players have a far too casual attitude to goal kicking. Some are not even upset when they miss. Kicking straight is one of the fundamental skills of a good player.

I remember Graham Cornes commenting on Plugger attempting to kick a goal from the impossible pocket at Ami. None of the Crows could do it and were taught to pass to the centre from that pocket. To kick it you would have to hang the ball high up in front of the goals and have it drift back inside and drop quickly.. Almost impossible .Plugger kicked it! Cornes was gobsmacked! That level of skill requires dedication and constant practise. Our players often do not even have the kicking technique right let alone the rest. Coaches need to come up with remedies! These were ideas I have heard over the years!

1.Pick out a face in the crowd behind the goals and just kick the ball to him /her not worrying about the sticks. Just like warm up time.
                      2. Imagine someone is leading to the middle of the goals and kick to that lead, ignoring the sticks again.
                      3. Visualise the kick first and swing the leg once before the kick
                      4. Concentrate on the follow through .If the follow through is correct the toes should be pointing to the middle of the goals and the kick will be straight if the ball was dropped correctly
5,Above all don't panic relax and avoid nervous jerky actions.Keep the run up smooth .Keep one hand on the ball until it touches the boot to avoid dropping it off centre.
6.Get the best kicks to coach the rest! LJ should be coaching Reid.!(and Goodes!!!)
7.Go with the natural action ,even if wrong (eg Buddy) and work around it rather than change it

Just a few of many ideas to improve goal kicking!

Watching AFL on TV is very limiting in the sense that you don't see the whole field. Many times that we try to play on we can't because we have no one to kick to or play on to. We always manage to flood the backhalf very well but sometimes on the rebound we struggle as there is no one up the pitch to play too. However this year we have improved on this. Last year it was terrible.

Sam Reid at the aftermatch didn't fill me with a lot of confidence that his kicking is going to improve anytime soon.

John Stevens... and he wasn't even coming at the goal from an angle like LRT was

(sorry - this was in response to who else had missed from the range LRT missed)

Reid has great hands, timing, leaping, marking skills. But if you cant kick a footy as a professional to a set target, when you have been doing it since you were like 6, and you do it almost every day in training, is very baffling to me, even in tough conditions.
Goodes should be drilling them home 8 out 10 times, to show the others how to do it not still struggling to kick it straight thru the big ones.
Maybe it was a very off day in appalling conditions, but it has been a bad trend this year.
The tigers were desperate to win this one, as we will be to beat The Blues, who are full of confidence. Swans will have to play out of their skin to win.

yeah its got me beat! We are so professional and committed in chasing, tackling, spoiling and someone who shirks a hard collision really stands out. Its like these are considered higher order skills over kicking. Our best professional players can blaze away, any old how, shank it right or left, miss a target by 20 metres and its ok. Our kicking will lose us games soon and needs urgent action.
