Is this guy for real? No clappers? Indeed.

Why do grown men and woman think that cheering or chanting like this adds to the atmosphere? Every cheer squad does it and only cheer squad members participate..the rest of us look at them and shake our heads with embarrassment. I can understand 8-12 years old doing it.
The worst has to be geelong..
"Geeee looong" clap clap clap they sound like slack jaw yodels!
To be honest those clapper sticks help co-ordinate the chanting immensely. Me or Alex in the Cheer Squad start a chant up & everyone follows in. It stops people starting up chants that are out of synch with each other. The kids love them. And lots of people become big kids and clap along with the chants.
I can only shake my head that people seem 'above' making noise at matches. Sadly 200 Freo fans outchanted 22000 Swans fans for much of the game last week. I find this highly insulting as a Swans fan. One of my worst experiences was in the 2006 Prelim finals when 500 Freo fans outchanted 64000 Swans supporters.

..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

I hate the clappers and the half time pick a supporter is downright embarrassing. I find the noise of these things annoying.Comment

Didn't sound like that where I was sitting in the Brewongle. All mighty roaring when Swans were on a roll and very quiet when Freo started to catch up. And we could make a helluva lot of noise sans clappers where I was (the young boys behind me didn't come last week, thank goodness!).Comment

It is called supporting the team. Some people want to actually support the side in an active way TOGETHER & in unison. It has been going on since the game was started back in the mid 1800s. Does it make a difference; OF COURSE it does!?

I was at the freo game and the Sydney *clap clap clap* chant was very clearly out of time for a lot of the game with different sections starting their own. Clearly the clappers haven't stopped that. Also the Freo chant was very loud - that's the nature of those long slow chants. They Syddd-neeey one would have clearly been louder if perhaps the cheer squad didn't smother it just as it was about to get going.Comment

Lots of people who go to the footy aren't that into chanting etc. They clap, cheer or otherwise when we kick a goal or when something good happens, but a lot of Swans attendees don't get into the other stuff too much. That may be due to the lack of the 'tribal' factor in a lot of fans, who are either recent converts to the game in the last 30 yeas or who follow the Swans in addition to the NRL, soccer etc. It may not be ideal but we also have a pretty good non-threatening environment at most games and a lot of people like going to Swans games in Sydney for the very fact that the yobbo factor is small to non-existent.Comment
