Not a great deal is done outside of a stones throw of the SCG and certainly confined to the Metropolitan area.

Watching the Magpies and Bombers foxtel shows, they seem to do a fair bit in the community so I really don't think the Swans do any more than anyone else.

I imagine that GWS would have to receive the same salary concessions.

You can't really compare the 1980's to what is happening today. I think its simply that Sydney is a more expensive place to live.
Nothing like a good light bulb moment.

Anyone arguing about our precious gifts should be referred to Eddie McGuire, who lived in Sydney while running channel 9 and stated, in no uncertain terms, that it is much more expensive to live in Sydney than Melbourne, and this is the man who "went to war" on our concessions, I'm not even certain we paid Hall all that much, given he was desperate to get away from St Kilda

Funny that. I seem to remember when in the week prior to the 2005 or 2006 grand final, a media issue emerged that the Swans were 'technically' broke. Richard Collis ( and ex-president of the Weagles!) was incredulous that such an issue would emerge days prior to the GF. It is one of those BS issues that people like Eddie 'Custard Guts' McGuire would come up with to divert attention away from home issues. Yeah, I think they're scared. They also want an excuse when they lose.

I'd like to see some of you over on BAy 13 arguing these points. It's one thing to talk among ourselves, but if you like a good argument it's being waged fairly consistently there

This is a non-story. Shame on the Herald Sun for making it one. Firstly, there are perfectly valid reasons for us receiving the small amount of extra money we get and secondly, as others have pointed out, there are a lot of incentives for players to stay in Victoria etc. Thirdly, we're consistently in the finals, but we've won ONE premiership since relocating to Sydney (what a day that was...). It's not like we're tearing the AFL apart. Remember all the moaning when Brisbane, then Port, then Sydney, then West Coast won, and no Victorian team won the flag in 7 or 8 years? Since then, no non-Victorian team has won it and they've gone very quiet about that.

We live it every time we go to the footy in Melbourne - that's why our form at the G and generally in Melb can be very frustrating as it does not give us much room to move when these old chestnuts are brought up - as we tell enjoy the playing in a national comp or go and watch Coburg , Casey etc - mostly in good banter - thank god we finally won a premiership in 05 as it is shuts must of them up - that's why its great at the game !!!

I'm a HUGE swans fan living in Melbourne...a south melb original. Yes, the victorian clubs moan about concessions given to us (even if the living costs warrant it) but only seems to crop up when we seem a threat on the ladder. My comeback to any of these idiots is the favour given to them on the fixtures and the victorian fixture bias (10 victorian clubs in the AFL). Do you travel interstate every fortnight? Oh, and to my Pie friends "How many home games in melb do you have a year...17...18? If your team is good enough, is the grand final played on your home ground? It puts them back in their bug infested box!

Let them whinge away, it will not change anything. Growing the game in Sydney is AD's pet project, no expense spared.

It's a bit weird. On one level, I think most people with an interest in the game acknowledge that a presence in Sydney is beneficial to the competition. And I think they accept that this isn't just about having a team - it is about having a team (or two) that can be genuinely competitive. Yet apparently that competitiveness is supposed to stop short of actually winning a premiership.

It is not as if we have been a dominant force in the competition over a long period of time. Two premierships in 79 years (or 30 years, if you just count our time in Sydney) is hardly being greedy. And while there has been grudging respect of our sustained presence in the finals since 1996, it has been countered by a barely hidden derision that this has been achieved by putting together a succession of worthy battlers capable of consistent finishes in the bottom half of the 8 but with no genuine chance of challenging for the premiership. Even in 2005 and 2012 this seemed to be the overall opinion of our lists, until we somehow pop up at the pointy end of the season and win the damn thing. At which point we've suddenly got an unfair advantage that enables us to pull together a star-studded team that other clubs can compete with. Except in the next breath we are again being derided as a team lacking star quality - how many media pundits won't be able to find room for us in their top 8 predictions for the start of 2013, I wonder?

The funniest thing is that this whole COL thing only pops up once we won the premiership. More hilarious is that apparently we've poached so many players and are full of salary sucking stars so SURELY Sydney shouldn't be able to get near Tippett. I've heard people say of 'Goodes, ROK, Bolton, Kennedy, Mumford, Richards, Reid, Shaw ect. all getting high end salaries.' I nearly fell off my chair! Goodes is our highest paid player and even he isn't at the top of the AFL player salary list.

The Mumford myth gives me the @@@@s especially. Fancy giving a ruckman of his quality $1m over 4 years! Do the maths idiots, 250k isn't OTT. Yes it is a big increase from his 50k at Geelong on the rookie list, but its hardly budget breaking. Kennedy would be on close to peanuts given this is his first contract with us and most of our other players would get decent, but not marquee player cash. I'd argue that we have a reasonable amount of wiggle room considering Goodes/Bolton veteran status.
