Just look what happened to Brisbane once their cap concessions were taken away.... consigned to the bottom half of the ladder for nearly a decade.

Non AFL states need extra cap room to compete with AFL states.

Dont think Brisbane are a good yard stick at all, even though we'll be compared to them ad naseum.

Concessions or not, they would still be a basket case at the moment. They've been very poorly run since their premierships. They also dont mention that they found money for Fevola when they wanted to. Like Melbourne there has been some fairly dubious treatment of some of their veterans which effects both the morale and team balance. The salary cap line is purely sour grapes.

On the other hand, we've been really well managed - we've been competitive, had no raids from GCS or GWS, put together a low key list that has just won a premiership.

I think we will lose some of our cap as a result of the Tippett trade which has brought it to the fore, but I agree that it should be extended to the WA teams at the least.

Yep to all the above, in particular the references to The Lions.

Ireland explained how it works this morning. We work within the same salary cap as all other teams THEN ad 10% to the contracts. So every player on the list gets a 10% COL adjustment to a standard contract. The only exception is the Rookies who get "a bit more than 10%."

So all this talk about us using the COL to go out and buy marquee players is complete crap.

Much like the Duckworth-Lewis system, the Carbon tax and the designated hitter rule, the people who complain the most about these things are the ones who have failed to take the time to even attempt to learn how it actually works. The Adelaide president suggesting we've hoarded it to afford Tippett is a classic example, when it's public record that we pay it to each player for what it is - a cost of living allowance.

Anyone with any sense of greater perspective understands many of the issues other posters have raised on this thread. It costs more to live here; there are fewer corporate or external options; there are fewer players to draw from so we have to offer players something to move; we had money in the cap available post-Hall. The AFL media and fans of other clubs wrote us off all year because apparently we're not as talented as the other clubs and now they're having a go at us for buying talent???!! Two All-Australians only remember.

Finally, the biggest reason the allowance won't go is that GWS get it too.

              Finally, some sense.

              Colless:

"The thing that seems na?ve to me is, we've got 44 players on our list who are represented by managers who know that the allowance exists, so every time we do a contract, it is 'This is what he'll get paid elsewhere, we want 10 per cent".

"We've got a cost of living allowance. It is clearly dearer in Sydney. Even [Collingwood president] Eddie McGuire, who's probably railed against these things, spent some time living [in Sydney] and accepted it is much dearer than living [in Melbourne]."

Ireland also said Tippett would be on less than he was paid at Adelaide next year, if the trade went through, refuting claims he would be on a million-dollar deal to continue his career in the red and white.
The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible news

I think it was from Ireland's press conference. Harford has been squealing like a stuck pig the last 2 days about our so called concessions. Talk about sour grapes. he as good as called Ireland a liar.

Maybe Harford can explain to us how Hawthorn can afford Gibson, Hale, Burgoyne, Gunston and now Lake?????

His explanation was that when they won their GF they had a bunch of 20 year olds who werent on a lot of money. Not sure how he can argue now if they just picked up Lake on $600k.

What all these complainers aren't thinking about is that Melbourne produces more players than any other area so for Melbourne clubs they are not having to attract or retain players wanting to go home by having to put more $ in their contracts. This is a real factor for us.

An interesting exercise is to look at each clubs list and see what % of their lists are local products. In the case of Melbourne clubs, Vic country sourced players can be considered local because there is no go home factor for them. Why do Geelong have so many ex Geelong Falcons?

The WA and SA clubs also have a large % of local product on their list.

Despite our best efforts to find locals, how many current Swans players are local in comparison to all the other clubs?

When I've got time I'll actually do the exercise and report back.

Would these complainers be carrying on like idiots if we'd finished say 7th to 10th this year where most of them predicted we'd finish? I'd suggest not!

Funny how he included Hodge in that list and said he wouldn't have been on much at the time. Yeah, sure.

I have no problem at all if we are set the same salary cap as other clubs, and the amount on the contract is the base amount, and then a loading is applied over and above the base amount to reflect the COL. That way it becomes the standard amount across all players, is transparent and does what it's supposed to do without question. Simple to track and might just silence it all once and for all...

                                I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.
