Findlay's error was like a brain snap, a filthy night for him, but a directive must have gone out that we (the umps) owe the Swans one, and the OOB they ignored was a fair repayment.

THE OOB was an interesting one.
I assumed it was OOBOTF, but as it never came into the field of play it couldn't be OTF.

A strange technicality n the rules.

How absurdly clean and clinical and cool was Mitchell's kick for goal in the final quarter?? Geeez

It happened in the Gold Coast game too.

We at least had the advantage of a game in the wet the week before. I hear Malthouse having a whinge about not having played in wet conditions for quite a while.

All the good things aside, how in the hell did McGlynn miss that goal at the start of the third quarter. Would have been 46 to 13 scoreline. I guess he made up for it but his miss made us all sweat a fair bit.

It wouldn't be a Swans game if they didn't make us sweat for at least a portion of the game

Classy footballers make it look easy, and mitchell is well and truly a class player in the making

What really showed up last night is that we have some seriously good, next generation footballers.

Everitt was very good again and Tippett, well he looks like he will go to another level. I was a bit doubtful about Tippett being a ruckman but boy did he deliver there last night. Gives us great flexibility.

We all know about Mitchell but BJ looks like he has everything. The people I watched the game with on TV are suitably impressed and all agree he looks a star in the making. And Lamb showed us his worth. Can't wait to get AJ back next year.

It couldn't possibly be view as an "understandable" mistake. It was completely inexcusable, particularly noting that in a part time job Mr Findlay earns in excess of $100,000 per year as an umpire.

For the sake of the game, the AFL through the Umpires Association must admit that this was a serious error. Further, surely Findlay will be demoted to the VFL next week.?
I was at the game with a Carlton supporting friend, we'd actually been saying in the first quarter how neither of us can recall ever seeing that rule applied after Carlton had not remotely hidden rushing a behind so we were both gobsmacked to see one actually payed. If nothing else it was just completely crazy to see it paid under those conditions as well, normally they make some concession to the weather (like being lapse with the sliding in rule seemingly last night).

It was quite strange, I can only assume that there's some sort of rule about having prior opportunity before rushing under pressure? It would be tenuous at best if that was the case, but it would give some insight into the umpire's thinking?

I can assure you that every time he came to the bench he was absolutely hearing it from all of the players and staff just how good a job he was doing, when he came off so X could get a run he nearly collapsed and every player that cycled through the bench for the remainder was telling him how well he'd played. It was interesting and it was clear that he'd done the job that he'd been asked to.

One minor comment on suggestions of a second half fade- I think a fair part of that was being a forward leading to midfielders who were kicking with a heavy ball and tired legs. At the ground it was obvious was still making room and putting in the effort up until he came off, but he was victim of a lot of balls coming into the forward line that weren't anywhere near where he was leading.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Last night was so pleasing for a good number of reasons, and it made sitting in the rain well worth it, but I agree and think Jesse deserved the praise being heaped on him by his teammates. He competed really well and worked his butt off in some of the most difficult conditions I've seen for years.

Also big ups to Andrejs as I thought he had a pretty fine game too - I had no problem with that wayward second bounce as it showed that he was taking the game on an backing himself.

Pretty good efforts for a couple of our favourite whipping boys. And I don't need to even mention Birdy....

What a great win especially with so many young players in the side.
At the end of the game when the Richard brothers were interviewed side by side, poor Xav's arms looked like sticks compared to Ted's huge guns!

Couldn't believe that free against Mal...I have never let out so many expletives before.

I love Tippett. Can't wait to see him play on a dry day. Hopefully that will be at MCG next week.

One thing I noticed about White is that he seemed to be playing from behind alot...maybe it was the conditions. Interesting that his great leaping cost us a goal in the 1st quarter when he touched the ball as it went over the pack!

When Malthouse talks, it's not just a small violin playing. That guy employs an entire string orchestra to follow him around to press conferences.

The debut of Xav R. is an amusing story. A few minute before the game starts Morton pulls out, shock, horror! Who have we got here to replace him? Oh no, skinny Xav who plays in defense. With obviously no serious expectation that an emergency would be needed, neither Horse nor Xav or anyone else expected him to get a game. I was wondering at the beginning of the last quarter whether they would actually bring him on, thinking the opposition would chew him up and spit him out but it was good to see that he did get on the field and actually survived! I wonder how he was feeling sitting there on the bench!

Thank y ou for the insight Stella! I always knew Jesse was a popular man, and I have always had a soft spot for him, I just appreciate hearing that the players and staff rated him, that counts a lot. I knew I was right, he was doing a job, probably a sacrifice job, and doing it well.
