I love Mummy but I have to say that given Goodes may have only 2014 at best in him then we need to keep White........that may mean letting Mummy go and a trade of a late 1st round pick would be fair or other suggestions as per above
I know this is left field but Pebbles may have some interest from a team like Melb who want a leader and hard tagging type player to come in and I wouldnt be surprised if Roo's approaches Pebbles and maybe even a player like Birdy, who can come in and do the hard roles well on good players and allow the young guys to keep developing
my 2014 team =
Goodes, Tippett, McGlynn
Parker, Reid, ROK
Pyke
Macca
Hannes
Mal
K.Jack
Kennedy
Shaw, Grundy, AJ
Rampe, Ted, Smithy
Bench:
19. White
20. Jetta
21. Mitchell
22. Rohan
23. Lambie
24. Birdy
25. LRT
26. BJ
27. Biggs
28. Dre
29. Cunningham
etc etc"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Word is that Dustin Martin and his agent flew to Sydney this morning (as did Simon Goodwin & Adrian Dodoro). Considering that we're all over in Perth it would have to be the ultimate smokescreen if they were coming to meet with anyone at the Swans, so it would have to be GWS. If Martin signs there it would be interesting to see what it does to the player market for Mumford & Franklin. Martin does have links to Sydney having lived in Campbelltown for a few years.Today's a draft of your epitaphComment

I would love the Swans to get the number one pick from GWS, but it would take more than Shane Mumford. The Swans would also need to give GWS another hard bodied midfield player (like a Luke Parker) and possibly also there late 1st round pick to get the GWS number one pick.
Tom Boyd would be gun player to get on Swans list though!
In reality, GWS don't need to trade for Mumford as they can pick him up with pick one of the Pre-Season draft, assuming that plan is not in place for Franklin!Comment

You can see that even a player like Bird, who I would never drop from the team, has a problem fitting into the AG's 22 when everyone is fit, even without Mummy. It accurately points out that we have a plethora of young inside mids. If Bird struggles to get a game, what can you say about Lamb? Why would we want Heath Shaw?
We will be taking a hit in the next few years with retirements of old stalwarts. We constantly need to take opportunities to freshen up the list and prepare for that time, lest we end up like a St. Kilda.
...............................................
It had crossed my mind that Roos would make a play for Bird, offer him a co-captaincy along with Jones. I really rate Birdy, but think it would be a good move for him. He would the The Man at Melbourne, yet struggles to get recognition in such a strong Swans midfield.Comment

Lets see what our current list can deliver for us in 2014. Rampe, Mitchell, Richards, Biggs, Lamb and Brendon's Jack have made their debuts this year and should all be better players in 2014.
Garry Rohan will be better after a full preseason. Adam Goodes will have a better pre season than last year. LRT, Jetta, and Sam Reid will be ready for big pre seasons.
Parker, Rampe and Everitte will continue to develop and we should have Alex Johnson early in the season.
This may be the time to let the list grow organically and see how far it will take us!
Add to that some young blokes in the Twos who are playing great footy; Jake Lloyd, Dan Robinson, Xav Richards, Alex Brown, Tim Membrey, Dean Towers and Jordan Lockyer is starting to show us what he is made of too. Naismith is going to be a GREAT ruckman, remember I made the prediction.
We need to draft Lloyd Perris, Jacob Dawes (from Black diamond League), Jack Hiscox and some other young blokes out of the national draft. All the mentioned except Perris could be rookies.

With Tom Bellchambers signing a new deal with the Bombers, Mummy is clearly the number 1 experienced ruckman on the market, which you would think would increase his value and perhaps even fuel a bidding war. Collingwood and GWS, the 2 clubs mentioned most in a trade, both have mid first round picks that might be on offer. Tempting, given we have 3 other ruckmen that played quite well most of the 2nd half of the season.
Rucks at Swans; Mummy, Pykie, Naismith & Tippett (only when absolutely needed). We hopefully will put Jacob Dawes on the rookie list and he will be the fourth REAL ruckman. Great build, Dawes, and he is about Mummy's height.

Do you know we have five sets of brothers in the under 18/19 Academy squad: Dickson, Michael & tom; Dobson, Harry & Thomas; Heeney, Beau & Isaac; Keough, Brad & will; Roos, Dylan & Tyler. Just a bit of trivia.Comment

If you are classing Jesse as a ruckman then you are deluded. Jesse White is a lead up forward who can play up the ground not a ruckman. For a start he is giving away far too much height at only 196cm and secondly he was never much of a ruckman in AFL company. Different in the Twos where the ruckmen are not as tall and mobile.

I should add that my views are prejudiced somewhat by my belief that the trend in both rules and the evolution of the game is making the ruck contest less important. There have been so many times this year when sides have easily won games while being dominated in the ruck contests.
Hawthorn and Geelong both have had fairly weak ruck performances, but have dominated. Freo seem to play just as well without Sandilands as they do with him. We were beaten by the Saints last year when Jason Blake was no. 1 ruckman at 189 cms and he destroyed us in the ruck.
I think the trend will be to go for athletic ruckmen that can make an adequate contest without necessarily winning all that many. Freo's Zac Clark is the prototype future ruckman for mine. Geelong's Bliclavs and Vardy are a couple of others. Maybe Naismith and Patrick Mitchell will be the next wave.
The general trend in the game is for less physicality and more protection from potential injury to players, increased speed and quicker ball movement. Under these circumstances, the role of the physical ruckman is being diminished.Comment

I don't classify White as a ruckman, but he is more than adequate for a forward. I would think that with Jesse's leap he can make up for the 2 cm height disadvantage he has to Mummy. J Roughhead backs up in the ruck and is only 193 cm.

To a certain extent I agree with you but I still think the big ruckman generally beats a smaller guy. Our two have been extremely valuable this year not only in the hit outs but as forward targets. Very hard for 191-193 defenders to match up on 198-203 ruck/forwards. Blake, like Goodes is a bit freaky but his main value has been as a defender not in the ruck. He like Barry, Craig Bolton, Goodes and Hodge always play taller. There are plenty of others in that vein but I can't think of them. He was only rucking because there was nobody else due to injury I believe and that caught us off guard.
I don't agree that speed is the only thing in the game now as I believe the game is still played inside and outside. That is always going to be the case while we have ball ups. There is a trend to have players who have pace playing in & out roles though. The other trend that is emerging is the leading power forward instead of the giant pack marker. This I think is due to the spoiling techniques and the double teaming tactics adopted by all sides now. The other thing is that high delivery is always dangerous and can easily be cleared if the opposition has their backline set up right, ie; Hawks, Cats, Pies against us.
But this thread is about recruiting and even though everything you say is pertinent to recruiting the right players we still don't know which way you would go. I personally would like to see us persevere with recruiting young players as we have built up a depth of mid age players over the last few years and in the last two have kept to the youth policy. I would stick with the youth policy and develop them. We have had some pretty good wins as far as I can see. As I have already said several of my picks would ba academy players. I would also be tempted yo take Thomas Head on as a rookie.Comment

Agree with you Wolfy on Naismith. There's much to like about him. Could really by something with a full season behind him. Would probably be beaten in the seniors at this point, but not over awed.
That Thomas Head is a big looking lad. And can kiick a long way. Anyone know his ht. and wt. ? I would like to see more of him in the ressies next year even if he doesn't get a rookie contract.Comment

If Mummy goes to Hawks I'd prefer Breust or Isaac Smith. Both handy players and both NSW boys.
If he goes to Coll, I have a feeling straight swap for Heath Shaw. I'd prefer a package deal where we get Shaw, Ben Reid and they get Mumford, 1st Rd pick and White or Lamb.
If GWS, it scares me. They could get him in the pre-season draft for nothing. I'd try and be daring if he chooses GWS and try and negotiate a trade package (Mumford being part of it) that would deliver the 1st Rd pick to us. GWS could then use their pre-season draft to get another target such as Martin. Franklin would go to them as a free-agent.
I don't see any upside going for Shaw but Reid for mummy would be very enticing. Do we have much room to make many changes?, does it come down to Walsh vs Everitt? BJ vs Harry even though we've had a few debut I don't think they will all survive.

wolf i agree re inside and outside
Cats and Hawks love the spread and take the attack thru hands and short sharp uncontested football
Freeo and the Swans prefer to kick to a contested area and regroup field position preferably in the oppositions defensive 50m. This style of footy suits the 3 or 4 talls.
it is splitting hairs but the thing that shifts me on this is Goodes most likely retiring by end of 2014?......which means White has to stay and hopefully Mummy
Do you think Naismith will be ready at any stage in 2014?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Neither would be near our best 22 and would simply hinder the development of our younger players so why would you bother?Comment
