The NRL fans and media in Sydney (and probably Brisbane) are nowhere near as rabid as the AFL in Melbourne. NRL doesn't have the levels of religious fervour that the AFL has. Not to say that NRL players don't get harrassed or that they don't live in a goldfish bowl to a degree, but they don't seem to have as high a status as their AFL counterparts.
Lance Franklin to become a Swan

'There has been plenty of bleating from Melbourne clubs about how Lance Franklin managed to get himself from Hawthorn to Sydney, and how do the Swans fit him in? But what rival clubs' coaching departments will be thinking and saying is not ''how?'' but ''wow!'''

Hmm, well Buddy isn't a pack mark or overhead at the best of times. So unless he is crumbing off Tippo maybe not.Comment

Didn't hear all of the discussion so I stand to be corrected but an announcer on SEN last night asserted that what the Swans have done re. Buddy was "not in the spirit of the game" and that the AFL should make a stand and charge the Swans with "bringing the game into disrepute."Comment

The Victorian media wants to have us charged for "bringing the game into disrepute"
Hypocrisy reigns south of the Murray yet again!Comment

The article is just pure tripe but the comments made are indeed astute. This contract is clearly about the present value of money and when the payments are to occur. Really astute contract negotiations by Ireland and so far ahead of the standard contract negotiating plodders in afl club land.
(NB: Nice that the Swans have brought those two together again.)

Melbourne clubs are making a lot of the Franklin deal, but they could fight back more strategically. The Melbourne Clubs could be talking to the agents of Kieran Jack, Josh Kennedy, Daniel Hananbery and Nick Smith and asking them whether the Swans are offering them deals based on their talent and output? The agent will say probably not, but they have bought into the vision of having Tippett and Franklin at the football club. The Melbourne clubs will then say - well Kieran Jack has played in the Swans team since 2007 and must be coming up to his free agency window in the next couple of seasons, don't get him to sign anything for the Swans before has has heard us out!
If an injury prone Daisy Thomas is worth $ 700,000 a year as a free agent Jack must be close to that value on the free market!Comment

Sounds like Mark Fine. 'Man leaves employer for higher offer.' Truly an outrage.[/QUOTE]
No, it wasn't Mark Fine although he hates the Swans, too. It was after midnight and Fine knocks off then. The name Mark Stone rings a bell with me but, as I said, I missed the start of the discussion so could be wrong. In fairness to SEN, Stone's(?) on air partner intimated that football clubs are in the business of winning premierships and anything they do that is within the rules is acceptable.Comment

Seriously though, sadly for those north of the border you get most of your news from Victorian sources. So it's going to be biased to different degree's to appease their audience. Also to be a decent piece they need to also highlight the risks of the contract. Lastly of course like anywhere you have the loud idiots grabbing headlines or just being ignorant.
If you are really that surprised or upset you might want to just source you media elsewhere, or support/start your own. For the record there's plenty of "guests" on shows patting us on the back.Comment
