Even Lewis Johnston, who's obviously no ruckman, was a big exception by us in terms of taking bigger blokes with our first round pick?was both perceived to best available, and filled a specific (perceived) need at the time. Beyond that, it's mid-sized players all the way, baby. For the Swans to do a volte face on that dearly-held belief, in a draft where the vast bulk of the decent players who'll be left by pick 15 are mid-sized, would be a quite a surprise.
On the other hand, our track record with earlyish draft picks - be they tall, medium or small - is so dreadful that maybe the club should just do something differently.

We've been too speculative with our first pick for too many years. Nothing will please me more if they just take the best pick available who may be of the 'no frills variety', but just be exceptionally good at what they do best.

I actually thought Jed was going to make it, before he went and delisted himself to go to the Giants. The one likely type left, Rohan, has already had his share of terrible luck. It's a curse.

Jetta seems to be doing ok.

WE SAY: Shades of Matthew Richardson

          Why because we can.
They said on SEN radio that we may go for Tom Cutler.. Who is he? I have heard about most of the top draftees, but not hear of Tom Cutler??

Yes but Jett's doesn't count technically becasue he was our second pick of that draft. 14 from memory which is in the first round, but only after Gazza at 6.

              Interesting mid
Should be picked up with pick between 20 to 30

              Tall mid

              Info on him
              Tom cutler
              2013 draft prospect: Tom Cutler - m.afl.com.au

              Thread on the guy
              Pick 23 - Possibilities? | Page 39 Crows | BigFooty AFL Forum

              Info
Medium midfielder with good game sense and ability to hit targets consistently by hand or foot. Can play on talls and smalls due to his athleticism and reads the ball in flight particularly well. Makes smart decisions when he comes off his man to affect the contest or win the ball back.

              More info

              19. TOM CUTLER
              (Oakleigh Chargers, 192cm, 84kg)
A strong, powerful player, who could play off half-back or through the middle. Cutler is driven, and asks a lot of himself. He missed games this year through injury, but got himself into excellent shape for the combine and worked hard to remind everyone there of his athletic abilities. If he works as a midfielder, he'll be hard to match up on given his height and power.

He is the type of player I like the swans to pick up mid round. 192cm back/ mid will solve a few issues for the swans we do need a few more players of his height on the list.

Still like us to take CAM MCCARTHY
Or key Backman at pick 15. All the best mid will be gone. Go for best key position do something different. We need talls.

It's the first uncompromised draft in a while and only slightly distorted due to FA compo picks, so it's a bit of fresh start and makes the draft a bit different this year.

We have a real opportunity to land a few good players to make up for losing 9 senior listed players this year. I hope we go the 'safe' route with pick 15. Acres, Taylor and Dumont all seem solid prospects that can play multiple positions and could be available at 15. Hopefully that will kill off the 1st round curse.

As noted, Tom Cutler has be mentioned as a as possible 1st rounder. He looks a good prospect, but hard to say how he stacks up against some of the more notables. Certainly looks a decent pick in the second round.

There are a whole stack of promising players that may be available with our second round picks. Some will likely be taken before we get a chance, but most should be around. Here are some names with an emphasis on tall players:

                - Of the key position defenders there's Giles, McStay, Jake K and Matt Sully. Gardiner will probably be gone.
                - Others that would be of good value are Hewitt, Cutler, Marsh and Hourigan.

A couple may also fall to pick 44. If we could land 2 or 3 from this group, I would call the draft a big success.

We usually come up with a 'hidden gem' surprise, and if we do, I hope it's a good one.

I still think we should draft the younger Tippett with one of our later picks! He sounds as if he is now a ready made key defender and we need help there! As for our first pick I really hope we draft the best player available. I like the sound of Taylor if he's still available. He may be short but since when have rovers meant to be tall! Brent Harvey clone and we could use one of them!

Because we signed Derickx, pick 44 may be our last. If we use 53 it will mean that our list goes up by 1, unless we cut someone else (but who?). I would suspect that we will target a key defender, but who knows how things will fall; hard to say which ones we rate and if they'll be available by our pick. We may also find that some non-KPPs deemed too good to pass up (like Membrey last year) that may be available in slots earmarked for a KPP, so we could get caught out and find the only one available is the younger Tippett. I think if Hewitt and Cutler were around for picks 32 and 35 and a Jonathan Marsh at 44, we may just find ourselves without a KPD and either do without or use pick 53 for the best available, which may well be Joel.

2013 AFL Draft predictions: who will your club select? | The New Daily

I have gone for kpps in this draft because of the swans need to build in the area to cover the losses over the next few years as players leave and we need the time to develop them.

Waiting for players to leave and fill roles will cost the swans too must money in the furture. years.

We need to pick the kpps in the first round to get ahead of other clubs picks.

Why because we are in the last pick of each round so to go ahead of other clubs
we need to pick the best kpp in the first round.

It,s just an idea that may work for the swans this year to get ahead of the other clubs to pick the best kpp,s in the draft.

Mid we have covered we need kpd, kpp and give them the time to develop them.

Don't follow others clubs stratergy by picking best mid first round.

In fact, the final official draft order has us able to pick down to 69 (which would be our 6th pick) without going 'over'. This is because clubs can do any combination of 38 senior: 6 rookie, 39:5 or 40:4 that they want, with only regular rookies counted in that breakup (i.e. non-International or 'alternative talent' rookies aren't included in that equation?you can have up to 3 of them regardless of what you do with your other 44 players).

That said, the Swans' list management history (keep your senior list as short as possible, both to minimise salary cap problems and give you more flexibility in promoting worthy rookies to play) does suggest that we'll only pick to our 4th pick at #44, and then graciously retire. Unless, perhaps, we get tempted by a dazzling bargain at #53.

So Emma Quayle has us taking Zac Merret at 15 in her mock draft overnight.
She is usually spot on with her mail, so what are everyones thoughts?

Quickest decision maker in the draft. A beautiful left foot kick. Some pace. Can kick goals......In todays pressure style footy, he sounds excellent...I hope she's right.

Having said that, there could be some tall bargains at this pick also....Let's just hope they don't blow it with this pick, as they have in the past.
