What about money in the pocket? Is there a set pay rate for rookies or does the fact that he was an All-Australian team selection count for anything? I suspect he earns less on the rookie list than he would if on a team list.

rojo my guess is that given the club has invested heavily in their academy players the trade off is that the player goes to the club of his choice / takes a slight hair cut on the money in the first year or two with the rub being that he will be very well looked after in the future

He impressed me greatly this year but I will reserve full judgement until the end of his second year as clubs may work him out.

A little premature to be putting him in the same bracket as Mattner, I actually don't think he will be in our top 22 if we are to win a flag but is excellent backup.

I think Rampe toward the end of the season had already surpassed the Mattner of 2012, but probably not the early Mattner. He was hampered somewhat by his hip problems and lost a lot of this offensive dash from his earlier years.

For me, Rampe is clearly in our best 22 and could even be pushing for a top 10 BnF next season. He came back to training in great shape and looks determined to set the world on fire.

It will be interesting to see if Laidler can take a spot in the back 6, which would force either Rampe or Smith into the midfield, where they probably want to be anyway.

After all the noise regarding Perris going onto rookie instead of primary list I would be shocked if he wasn't on the same money as if he had been drafted. It's only $20,000 more or something, isn't it? Obviously that's a lot to to the kid (and you and me!) but it's drop in the bucket to a multi million dollar franchise.

Mind you there are a lot of drops being soaked up by the sponges at the top.

So the Swans will play no part in the Rookie draft. That is sensational news in as far as it means that all 7 rookies from 2013 have retained their places (2 upgraded and 2 having game time). Obviously the recruiters and developers are doing their jobs!

OUr list is crammed with talent plus depth so, in hindsight pick 44 was a rookie pick really. Looking at the Aliir Aliir video from 2012 when he was playing ruck for Queensland you can see why they are interested in him as a project. He has a touvh of the Nic Nat's about him plus says all the right things about actually WANTING to be a defender...plus he has already shown that he can face adversity head on PLUS he is a Swans fan.

Just looking at the medium (five year) plan we have to remember that Reg is not a veteran - he is only 27 (28 in June). Ted is 31 in January. LRT is a few months younger having turned 30 in September. It's not like we need 2 new KPDs next year. Glass, Scarlett, Fletcher, Roos, Dunkley - I know these guys were top players but it is COMMON for a KPD to play to 34.

                We have.....

                T. Walsh (26 in Feb) 193 cms - 99 kgs
                P. Mitchell (24) 207 cms - 107 kgs
                A. Johnson (22 in March) 193 cms - 91 kgs
                X. Richards (21 in April) 194 cms - 87 kgs
                J. Lockyer (21 in June) 191 cms - 91 kgs
                A. Aliir (Turned 19 in September) 196 cms - 90kgs

....as possible key defenders ALREADY on the list

And those kgs for the youngsters are pre 2013 season. Surely we are fair odds that ONE of these players will be good enough to partner Reg within 3 years

We took 2 HBFs last year, 2 midfielders this year and next year is KP draft (apparently) so we'll probably get (at least) 1 highly rated KPP player next year.

Seems to me a fair gamble to (effectively) rookie a player who MIGHT have something extra special when compared to a vanilla KPD like Tippett or Rance.

sharpy i also think that the Swans have been one of the best at profiling development players

ie the Swans mantra of skill, physical ability and attitude

attitude being the component we have become famous for > and i think Pyke was a great example of finding the right personality to go with the development and hopefully we see the same with Mitchell and Allir

ps i think Mitchell is more like 201cm or 203cm ?

btw here is an article on mitchell i hadnt read before alluding to a $90k pa salary contract he has attracted which is like us taking on two rookies from within OZ

Shame we're not going to take part in the rookie draft, considering Darcy Gardiner and Darcy Hourigan slipped through and weren't pick in the ND.

The other thing I'd like to see Rampe add to his repertoire next season is the way the courageous Marty drifted over to fill the hole in front of the gorillas, making life more tolerable for Ted and Reg. I agree that even without that particular little trick he's on track to be a 200+ gamer for us.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

You might be right, definitely two Darcy's slipped through though. I may have muddled them up

I think we will have one pick in the rookie draft won't we? upgraded 2 to the senior list, added Perris to the rookie list, and doesn't Mitchell go on as a Cat B so not count? Or Does he still count towards the total?

We have two spots available but the club has indicated they won't be using them. We would still have a pretty big rookie list as we make full use of the category B list, whereas most clubs don't because they don't have the zone picks they can use to fill that list.
