    b) Teams that aren't from Victoria (Or low-drawing teams like the bulldogs) are generally played at Aurora to lessen the chances of them getting found out for the overrated club that they are.
    c) If the Hawks membership is so important, where are the 50,000 members when they're getting crowds of only 38,000?
    d) Hawk 'AWAY' matches are also played in Melbourne. So that 'away' figure isn't that impressive.
    e) Bare in mind, they have been an extremely successful club for the last 5 years on-field. This has a significant effect on the crowd figure at both home and away.

The swans on the other hand, DO NOT have 10 other Sydney teams to boost their home attendances. We have 1. Nor does the state have a tradition of membership.

I stand by my opinion that their club is most definitely not a powerhouse (At least in terms of supporters).

You should join them and buy a membership. A pet membership as well to boost the numbers a little.
Your points are just ridiculously biased. Your last comment is being reported to the moderators. What I am saying is I do think our packs are a bit light on. They do have a huge following and to say any different is just fooling yourself. you obviously hate Hawthorn, I don't hate any other team particularly, only when they play us. To hate a football club because they are successful or for any other shallow reason shows immaturity and lack of perception. There are indeed 10 teams in Victoria that have to share the loyalty of 5-6 million people. The swans have one team, and of course NRL teams, but still we have between 7 & 8 million people to woo between two AFL teams. We do well but could do better and the club recognises this. The outgoing president talked about his vision of 50,000 members for the Swans which should be attainable in the Sydney market within 5 years. The Hawks played GCS, Melbourne & St Kilda all of whom have very little supporter base in Melbourne, the first being a new club and the other two because they are losing. You tried to fudge figures. I am willing to give every club their due even Collingwood, the enemy of every other footy supporter, when they do well.

As far as going to the Hawks club it was an enjoyable experience and I would hope the Swans get our own club in the future, the Kings Cross idea was not really a good one. It would be amazing to go to a Swans club with all the facilities the hawks, Cats, Pies, Bombers clubs have. We have had a lot of years to develop the Sydney market and due to a series of misfortunes this has not been done as well as the current and near current administration would have like. If we had someone like Richard Colliss in the beginning this may have been different. We are operating in an NRL market but soccer seems to be doing very well in this market. What is it that we could be doing to win the hearts and minds of NSW people? The Victorians are going to hate me but I believe we have to lose our Victorian history to a certain extent. It might be fortuitous to not promote the Victorian history of the club so loudly in NSW. The fact is many people, especially in Sydney, still see the Swans as a Melbourne club who is just here for the money. It doesn't matter how long we have been here many of my friends see it this way.

When I talk with people about the Swans who are NRL fans they say they won't follow them because they are not really Sydney, they come from Melbourne. GWS has got them well and truly flummoxed. They grind teeth and don't know where to hide on that one. My major point is Hawks are a powerhouse and that is that. The Swans still have a long way to go to win the Sydney market although we are slowly picking our way through the bigotry. Swans are on the right track but as Richard Colliss says we are in a very competitive market with many variables here in Sydney and building a strong supporter base is probably harder here than anywhere in Australia. After all if you don't continue winning people won't come out to play.

What did I start. I said I enjoyed going to the Hawks Club. That is a fa ct not a dribble comment. I used to live quite close to the club. My brother and nephew were both members. There was no need for such a derogatory comment. You are obviously very immature to post such a thing. By the way the clubs with the biggest supporter base are; Collingwood, Geelong, Richmond &Hawthorn all figures bear that out.

Thanks for the information Jenny. The thing I like about the sentiment expressed about the importance of members is that it's largely been backed up by actions.

Actually I think my rebuttal was perfectly legit.

You made it seem like the Hawks were pulling an average home attendance of 38,000 by themselves and I pointed out that their average attendance was largely boosted by playing much larger teams from the same city. Those 'average attendances' can be quite deceiving.

Your statistics don't prove much. All it proves is that the Hawks are good at scheduling matches. If an interstate club plays Hawthorn at home we'll get a better idea of where the hawks are at. Last time I checked... they were pulling crowds around the 30k mark (Only 1 whole game vs West Coast in 2013). In fact, they could only manage 23k vs Gold Coast in 2012 at the MCG. When you take into consideration that they have 62,000 members according to your statistics... you'd have to wonder where all the missing supporters are.

If you can take anything from my argument, it's that Melbourne clubs aren't as powerful as they seem at first and the swans actually pull decent crowds in comparison.

Membership numbers have been rendered meaningless by things like including 3 game passes as members. I don't believe Hawthorn are a 'power' club. Just fudging numbers

Can we please cut out the "dribble", "ridiculously biased", etc remarks.

I was going to delete all posts that included such a comment in their entirety, but there are some good points raised amongst the bickering. Any more such comments and I will delete (and go back and delete other, similar earlier posts).

And if you think someone has posted a "snide remark", please either just ignore it (if it is minor), or use the report post function so that it can be dealt with appropriately. Calling it out in thread is most likely to turn a minor (generally ignorable) spat into a full blown one that becomes unpleasant and irritating for other members trying to discuss the topic at hand.
                  Thanks

Well said Liz, particularly the 'unpleasant and irritating bit'. Most of us are interested in following a discussion often with some civil differences of opinion debated constructively.
