Yeah, getting your soldiers shot as decoys certainly shows where the enemy fire is but it doesn't win you Premierships. You gotta kick goals in the forwards if you want to win.Comment

Plugger was 33 when he retired in 1999, after kicking 5 goals in a losing final. He was 36 when he returned in 2002. He may have had a better season in 2002 if not for an injury in round one. He did lose a lot by being out of the game in 2000 and 2001.
Franklin is a more athletic shape than Plugger, and has the potential to be a good contributor like Goodes in his 30s. The real concern when you hit 33 or 34 is can you stay on the park. This is the problem for Goodes. Goodes original two week knee injury has turned into a situation where he is going to be out for the game as long as Alex Johnson was!
Key forwards Scott Lucas and Matthew Lloyd ended in 2009 aged 31 and 32!
On the positive side, Matthew Richardson almost won a Brownlow as a 33 year old playing on a wing in the 2008 season. However a hamstring injury sustained early in 2009 needed his career as a 34 year old.Comment

I played until I was nearly 38 and my output was similar to what it was when I was 18! (Don't ask the obvious question!)Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Can we please, please, change the title of this thread? I feel that now he is here, we need to move on from discussing the recruitment of Buddy, to how he plays for the Swans.
I'm not saying that we should close off the discussion to legitimate criticism of the deal, the club or Franklin himself because we most certainly should not, but can't help but think we should be focusing on the present and what he actually does on the field, and not get sucked into the media rubbish.
Just my $0.02Comment

When asked to compare life in Sydney to what he experienced in Melbourne, Franklin gives an insight into his world when he says: "To be honest I haven't seen too much of Sydney.
"I look forward to seeing a bit more of it.
"I haven't really left my house and when I do, it's bloody tough at times, particularly when things are getting reported that aren't true or you're just trying to keep private and then they put stuff in the paper.
"It can become a bit annoying, but there's nothing you can really do about it."
Make no mistake, Franklin isn't looking for sympathy.Comment

I have a great deal of sympathy for the old main. I have also been a Swan suppoter for a long time, While I may not be capable of switching teams, I'm certainly not happy with things. I liked the way the swans built a team in the last decade rather than trying to buy one. Yes i realise just how many imports there were in the 05 and 12 premierships - but somehow the recruitment of DirtyKurt, then Buddy seems different. whether its their huge paychecks or just the questions surrounding their character i dont know. it just seems the sort of thing despicable win at all costs teams like Carlton or Collingwood would do (usually at our expense).Comment

I had a call from my 70yo uncle last night.. He has been an AFL lover and umpire since the 50's.. He grew up in Sydneys west and has supported the Swans since they moved up to Sydney. He called to tell me that he is leaving the Swans for GWS. That the whole Buddy deal is very un-Swans like. I couldn't argue. I have been on the fence about the whole thing but am starting to think why the $%^ did we do it.. If Buddy wanted to play for us why the hell did we have to pay the ridiculous money we did.. Give him a 3 year contract like is sensible.. I can see wilderness years to come.. I just hope the Swans can make some hay in the meantime........Comment
