Many people rip in to Demetriou for many reasons.
Sometimes he's annoyed me a bit, bit overall I've always enjoyed that he was a strong leader, was articulate and passionate.
I don't really mind who takes over (obviously Eddie would be a nightmare and do far more to destroy the game than he would build) but I'd like someone who also is strong.
Jeff Kennett would be great if he hadn't made himself so yellow & brown.
The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.

Great comments everyone. I agree with most of you in that he has done a good job and has acted based on it being an AFL not a VFL. I hope his successor carries on in that direction.

I know he's ruled himself out but Eddie was never going to get the job.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't mind if they Americanized the in-between game sections a bit.

The NFL have more time to show commercials than the AFL as they have so many stoppages in gridiron. I seriously doubt it will come to that in the AFL.
I would seriously love the Superbowl Half Time Show to be replicated in the AFL. That Madonna show from three years age was superb.

We live in a Globalised Society and have the right to source the best talent. At least it will give the Bogan's something to talk about as they piss up their pay checks!

Gillian is my choice, but I would love him to bring in some NFL administrative talent. The NFL is an amazing system with 32 Franchisers that are run very well. The NFLs care for retired players is also World Leading.

To an extent the AFL already do that - have you watched a game on TV and noticed how we always see the centre bounce after a goal regardless of how many ads they show? The umpires wait for a light (usually about centre wing, would be from the Brewongle stand at the SCG) to give them the go-ahead to bounce the ball.
If the media pay enough then they will be able to have a lot more input as to what is shown and how it is shown and when it is shown.
All we can ask for is that it doesn't mess with the game.

I'll be damned. Never knew that. Always wondered how they managed to do it so precisely. Stupidly I thought it was just good timing. I feel so naive.

                    haha. The things you learn.
You'll also notice the light is behind the umpires when they bounce, so they usually are looking behind them for the signal.
Been going on for many years.

Its the first thing i asked many many years ago at the SCG. I saw these lights positioned i think it was the Brewongle stand just flash before the ump bounced the ball after each goal and asked about it. Was told by a richmond fan its to signal that the ads were over on TV. This was back in 1994 as well..i thought it was common knowledge?

What the code needs is a admin from melbourne, preferable one of the melboure big 4, so he can bring the game back to victorians. /s
How many times did he bail out a few Victorian teams? Some clubs love him down here. The ones that don't are the wealthy clubs. You would reckon that he actually did the injecting at Essendon the way those tossers carry on.

Gillan will be appointed for one simple reason.....the person selected must be prepared to follow the AFL mantra and business plan to the letter. If an applicant is not prepared to be indoctrinated in the AFL way then they will not get the gig. A lot of corporates like to be change merchants and put their own egotistical mark on an organisation. If that happened in the AFL it is likely to be to the detriment of the game. Just look at some of the CEO's of clubs over the years who have had no idea with the result that they steered their club to the bottom.

Good post Nico! Are you confident that the AFL strategic plan is perfect and only requires implementation by the new CEO?

I say good riddance. He didn't have enough guts to fold at least two clubs in Melbourne relocate them somewhere else. Instead he created two new clubs in GC and Sydney. Also, I don't believe he likes Sydney Swans at all regardless what people here think. The Swans started turning their fortune around before Andrew became CEO of AFL so I wouldn't give him too much credit. So, no loss for me.

Well, if anyone has the right to reckoned a traumatic relocation, it can only be a Swans fan . . . . . . . . just tell me you were a Swans fan back then.
