For this week we give Lloyd a full game whilst jack gives his ribs rest. Robinson comes in and plays 3/4's before kennedy comes on as the sub. Next week biggs and malceski do the same. Etc, etc. Oh and my usual weekly change, Derickz out and Nankervis in

The way we've played so far, it's not going to be a long season. Resting players is the last thing we need worry about.

Mitchell and Rohan have really struggled this year, some reserve footy would be good for both. Nankervis in Derricx out. Would like to see Lloyd get a full game to see what he has got.

I've made the point a couple of times. The effort, commitment and intensity of all players in that Fremantle game was incredible. This cannot be sustained every week. Players like K.Jack, Kennedy, Hanners, Mglynn and Mckvigh found something extra to secure the win. It's known by athletes as a burst, and you don't have many of them.

I recall Australia's greatest ever athlete Ian Thorpe finding a burst of energy in a relay at the 2000 Olympics. We beat the USA in that relay due to that burst of Ian's, but then he was beaten in the individual 200m freestyle the next night, and was unable to find the same burst to take him to victory.

We want to the Swans midfielders to find that burst during times of the year when the are playing top 4 opposition (Geelong, Hawks, Port and Freemantle) and in the finals. In between times, they need to be rested, freshened up regularly and other guys such as Mitchell, Lloyd, Parker, Bird, Cunningham, Rohan and Brandon Jack need to take on more responsibility and work their buts off with their defensive pressure.

It's the list that wins the league and not your best 22.

This is why I propose that Kiran Jack and Kennedy wear the subs vest each over the next two games. This will have them both ready to produce their very best against both Geelong and the Hawks. This strategy is risky, but we need to manage the season to produce our best when required.

Which is why I advocate premiership medals for all players who have played a game over the course of the year.

Also, in anticipation of Tippet , Reid and Goodes returning over the coming weeks and assuming no further injuries I propose the following:

            Tippett for Derickx
Reid for Grundy (LRT and Richards key backs, Reid swingman)
            Goodes for Lloyd

What player ever wants to be "rested"? You are an AFL player to play not to spectate. Also you want to be part of the team and experience the ups and downs with your mates.I can imagine the response of Kennedy,KJ etc to being told they are being rested. Its a bad idea all round and works against team building and the individual,s desire to play AFLat the highest level.

They will all get a rest in a month when we have a bye. Surely it's not unreasonable to expect them to be capable of playing four games before then?

Can you imagine the reserves with potentially 3 grand final players in for swans. Goodes Reid and ROK.
                    Judd played seniors, got injured.
                    tippet played reserves, got injured.
Brian Lake played reserves when he was needed in the seniors.

                    I see no trend here.

If they are fit to play, they play.

I guess it depends on the severity, I guess. There's been a fair bit of hullabaloo in the NBA because Andrew Bogut fractured a rib 2 games out from the start of their playoffs, he did that on the 14th of April and is still listed as "indefinite" and not expected to be back unless his team makes it through a fair way into the playoffs (so would be a return after a month, roughly). Obviously different sports, different guys, different rib injuries etc. but the potential contact Bogut takes to the chest in his position wouldn't be too dissimilar from some whacks in a game of footy. From what I can gather the biggest impediment for Bogut is expected to be conditioning, which you can live with in basketball to some degree to get 20 minutes out of a guy but in footy obviously that's a bigger issue.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

agree this talk of resting is too early.........we have started very slowly with our fitness and execution................. and it is time to keep the foot to the floor

great teams all have at their core a game plan that brings intense pressure and our boys will not be tired of playing this style by round 5........we need to create momentum now !!

learning from sports that apply relentless pressure as a cornerstone to their success - lets take soccer

ie Barcelona aims to win the ball back within 3 seconds on a turnover...............this has been a team for many years that spectators admire for their wonderful attack !!! behind the scenes and was only talked about for many years within the club was the foundation of their attack - ie an offensive defence

like soccer - afl goals come in a very high percentage by winning the ball back and capitalising in the quickest time possible..........2/3 of goals in soccer come from 3 or less passes.

think of the goals to Ballentyne or buddy against freeo or the 4 that parker kicked against Adelaide..............this was through offensive defence and winning the ball back then executing almost immediately

the Swans know that an offensive defence ie to win the ball back in the shortest period of time in numbers simply puts the opposition in such a state that they bit by bit start to crumble under the relentless pressure.......the opposition can not play their uncontested football with ease when we are rushing them like a pack of wolves

so in my opinion we wont tinker much with key players being rested as yet............not in round 6 of the AFL anyway !

"be tough, only when it gets tough"

There's no point in resting players for September if they end up watching from the stands. Maybe if we were in the top four we could have that luxury but for right now, it's all guns blazing baby! (Not blindly into the forward 50 though.)

Nankervis' form impressed me from the start but the coaches went the mature option and given the crash and bash role Derickx is playing, I can see the reasoning behind it. Still, if we were to debut a ruckman, I'd sooner it'd be against the Dees than West Coast or Geelong. Pyke looks to be struggling a bit without Mumford, it may take a year to build another partnership of that calibre.

Just quietly, I may have used intemperate language after Tippett's latest injury.

                                Very much depends.

Small crack in a single rib, minimal 0-2 weeks). Particularly if it's not mid-thoracic.

More ribs fractured or bigger fractures take longer, as deeper breathing (like with exertion) is increasingly painful with severity. Also more painful if the fracture is more lateral (as there is more movement of the rib with inspiration.

Flail segment ... a loooong time.

Bottom line is it is usually treated with rest until it is healed or pain is adequately controlled as a single crack/fracture can't really be fixated (well, technically it can, but it's not the normal treatment of choice unless there are complications) - it'll usually heal by itself.
Pressure to the fractured area can make it more comfortable to breathe/cough but would make high volume breathing with exertion (exercise) is somewhat difficult.

There was a release from the club that it was a "small" break - but in all honesty this doesn't mean a lot as only the club knows how severe it is & won't necessarily let everyone else know this.
