I reckon Pyke to be managed back through the ressies until he regains full fitness and form is a smart idea. They definitely won't go with two ruckman and lose the necessary run, not when we already have Tippett and Reid to do back up rucking.

McGlynn for an out of sorts looking BJ the only change. Lloyd or the great man to be sub.

It is amazing we now seem to be on the verge of ruck riches only two months after wringing our hands about the situation :-)

757 is spot on. we cant afford a underdone ruckman, so pyke will get a game in the 2e.

      Mcglynn in for hannerbury

No doubt a fit and firing Myke offers more than Derickx, but he has been neither fit nor firing so far in 2014 due to his very limited pre-season. It looks like we will be going with just the one ruckman from here on in and a 3 or 4 week spell in the seconds whilst Derickx is still playing well may get Myke some fitness which he is definitely going to need if we continue playing just the one ruckman.
Agree. McGlynn back in if he's better, which he should be by them. B. Jack out. That'll be it barring unforeseen injuries or suspensions.

C'mon guys, Tommy D plays his best game ever 12 possies, 20+ hitouts, 3 marks and gives away 4 frees and all of a sudden he's superman. Pyke would do that in a half a game even if he's unfit.
No contest as far as i'm concerned.

Tom D obviously has great endurance to carry the ruck for a whole game. Does anyone know his results in the 3km time trial or the beep test?

He puts in tackles and efforts for the whole game so he has great endurance.

I give Derickx a 10 for effort but agree that he is nowhere near a fully fit Pyke in any regard. We need Pyke fully fit for later in the year so I think we are in a position where we can ease Pyke back into it via the 2's..

              Just Benny in for BJ.

Tom D is only one bad game away from being the whipping boy.

                  This may well be true.

Having said that, he has well and truly exceeded my expectations. I was really bagging hum early on but he has proven a lot of us wrong. He is not a superstar but he is out there playing his guts out for us every week, how can you not love his story from a journeyman bit player to rubbing shoulders with Buddy et al. He is certainly playing his role of adequate backup and dong his required role.

I still suspect he will ultimately fall short of the quality required at the top level but if he keeps on improving then who knows.

For mine the feel good story of the season so far

Bit off topic. But just settled down to watch Freo v Cats. Never thought I would be supporting the Ballantyne/Crowley mob .....!

Not hard for me supporting Freo tonight. You just need to see the Freo coaching box with ex Swan premiership heroes (Lyon and Kirk)!
and if Freo win...we move to 3rd on the ladder!

Now back to my red wine and plate of pav..........Freeeooooooo!

Tom had 26 hitouts, Mike has had >26 hitouts 14 times in 78 games- strangely, Mike has also only bettered Tom's 12 disposals 14 times. Only 5 times out of 78 games has Mike bettered Tom's disposal and hitout count from Friday.

Yes, obviously lots with Mummy and Mike is clearly the top option.

Come finals, I'd rather we have Pyke in the team because he's a more skilled and well rounded footballer than Derickx. But for the time being, while Derickx is doing what is needed for this time of year, it's a great opportunity to set Pyke up for a good second half of the season by enabling him to catch up on his interrupted pre-season.
The logic certainly seems sound to me!
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

was it 3 effective hitouts last night for Tom vs 14 for the Bombers ?

not that it matters as we have become the masters of tackling and winning the ball from the opposition players who received the 11 effective hit outs tom didnt win for us anyway !

maybe leigh matthews has a point after all in his recent article on ruckman

Let's also not forget Pyke is a premiership Ruckman who was nearly bog in the 2012 grand final. Almost topped the league in contested marks last year and probably has the highest goal kicking conversion average in the club.
