So... for the Swans to finish top 2....

If the Cats finish second, wouldn't they play at Kardinia? They played their semi against Freo there last year so surely they would want to play there.Comment

No. That was a commercial decision by the AFL as they didn't think that many Freo fans would travel. Also, the AFL disadvantages Freo regularly on the basis of their limited interstate support. So the AFL punishes interstate clubs if they have good management (Sydney) or past poor management (Freo).Comment

Meh, I think given it was Fremantle it makes sense under the particular circumstances. I doubt they'd do it if it was the Swans cos of the strong South Melbourne support and the shorter distance to travel.

The MCG, like most venues, is kinda depressing half-full.Comment

A crazy question, but sometimes the crazy ones are worth asking: does Sydney actually want to finish minor premiers? If we had our choice of opponent among the top 4, we'd be barking mad not to pick Geelong. Finishing 2nd doesn't guarantee we'll play Geelong in week 1, but finishing 1st pretty much guarantees we won't.
Geelong are 2 games in front of Freo with 3 games to play, and have Carlton and Brisbane (the latter at Kardinia) in the last 3. The chances of Freo climbing into 3rd are very small. The chances of Freo falling into 5th are small (they can't realistically do so unless they don't beat Port at home in the final round). How difficult are a Ross Lyon-coached Freo on the road in an away QF? Just ask Geelong the question to that one.
I realise that a very hard couple of weeks coming up for Hawthorn, means that there's a fair chance we'd have to lose a game to not finish top. And not only don't I want us to lose a game, doing so would carry with it the real risk of falling to 3rd. Anyway, I'm not suggesting for a moment that anyone in coaching or on the field would ever put in a short stride. Also, I know that finishing 2nd is no guarantee of facing Geelong (who we obviously match up very well on in 2014). But still: everyone remembers forever who won flags. In decades to come no-one outside diehard fans and club statisticians remembers or cares who won the minor premiership?and so do we fans want it, if having it gives us a tougher run in the finals?Comment

If we finish second, play Geelong in week 1, that would most likely have us facing Freo in the preliminary final.
I don't think it matters too much. If we take it that the current top four are a notch above the rest of the teams this year and are the most worthy preliminary finalists, we're going to need to beat all three of them at some stage (probably) to win the premiership. Winning the premiership is all about beating the best of the rest when it counts. If we think our team is good enough, there's nothing to fear.Last edited by liz; 14 August 2014, 05:35 PM.Comment

I agree - I dont think it matters if we play Geelong or Freo. They both are great teams and if we are to get to the top this year we will have to beat the best of the rest, whoever they are.Comment

IMO, barring suprises in the finals, we are going to have to beat at least two, probably all three of Geelong/Freo/Hawthorn. I don't care what order we do it in, as long as we do it"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment
