Isn't it just. I read it earlier today, while at work, and then went to the ladies and bawled my eyes out for 5 minutes. As a piece that transports the reader into the shoes of the writer, and so many like him, I've read little like it.
Thanks to everyone who has been posting some of the wonderful contributions sane minded media people have been penning. I've not wanted to trawl through most of the media because I know there''ll be too much depressing stuff. But reading the arguments some have voiced has given me hope we may, as a country, yet get to a good place.
And some of those contributions have come from people on this forum too. Ludwig - your piece was fantastic. Annie - you nailed it with your comment on Adam holding a mirror to Australia. And Wardy, I too wanted to hug Robbo for his disgust at Alan Jones.
Me too. I didn't bawl for 5 minutes but I did shed a tear. Imagine that. 45 years old. I consider myself well read. I am certainly opinionated about many matters and I thought I had a pretty good handle on Indigenous Affairs for a keyboard warrior. I have no idea.
I saw the start of The Marngrook Show and one of the things they addressed was the so called "bullying" of the 13 year old girl. They replayed what Goodes said at the press conference the morning after and all he had was concern for her and said that she needed to be supported.
I wish that footage would be shown on other shows so that the Alan Jones' and Andrew Bolt's can see what idiots they are making of themselves. Their arguments and excuses have no substance and are pure lies.
Wow, it's been a terrible week. Some of the most hurtful, revolting behaviour I have ever come across in my many years. I keep wanting to distance myself from it all. After all, it's just a game. Surely there are other more important issues to be concerned with. But, alas, I can't move on. I've found myself obsessed with devouring the great posts here, searching for the humanity that surely exists, then 'accidentally' reading the comments that follow the many sympathetic analyses and sinking back into a fury at the racism that the nation needs so desperately to deal with. Is it the symbolism of it all that lends Goodesy's plight so much weight? An outspoken indigenous man refusing to be stay in his allotted place? Some respite here though. Carna bloods!

Very well said, I feel that sums up my week as well. From all the posts here, to social media, from the articles I have loved ( Stan Grant, Bob Murphy amongst others) to the other side of the coin ( Aker, warney, Bolt, Pinahi etc). Then the social media and digital media comments, I think it's there I realise we are actually in the minority. There are the blatant racists ( those who unashamedly use 'ape, Abo, monkey' in their posts) to those who don't realise they are (the "I don't like how he called Australia a racist country and chucked an imaginary spear" ) to the crowd who cover for the racists that aren't necessarily racist themselves ( the " I boo him the same way i boo umpires, champions of the game, dirty players etc ) but who cover for the racists and still now won't concede that that is what they are doing. I congratulate Adam for igniting this debate, he's made me confront things in myself, and changed the way I look at the whole picture. I'm sure he's done that for others on here too. He's also brought many racist out of the woodwork. Deserves another AOTY award for this if you ask me. What a brave and wonderful human being Adam Goodes is. Good on his little brother Lewis Jetta to, his part in this shouldn't be forgotten, and I doubt it will.
Joanne is still angered at how her daughter was treated by MCG security and police, blaming it on Goodes' reaction to the racial sledge.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Adam didn't conduct the interview. How can he be blamed for her treatment during said interview? Why not blame the guy at the turnstile who let her in? If she wasn't let in, she wouldn't have had the chance to racially vilify Adam.
"Picking on a 13-year-old child I thought was absolutely ridiculous and having her questioned by police without an adult being present was absolutely disgusting on the part of himself and the AFL," Joanne
Umm when your daughter is taken away, should you not insist on accompanying her instead of continuing to watch the game?
Joanne said her daughter did not want to re-visit the issue.
Well, Joanne, you approaching the national media should allow your daughter to keep a low profile.
"I do think people shouldn't boo him at the football, they should be trying to encourage him to be a better person than what he is," Joanne said
Oh, I'm sorry Joanne, extensive community work, founded the Go Foundation, Australian of the Year, dual Brownlow medalist, dual premiership player, 4 time All Auatralian ... how much better does Adam have to be?! I'd love to see your CV madam!
Joanne acknowledged Goodes was entitled to be upset at being called an "ape" but should have ignored the comment because of her daughter's age.
Oh, I understand. Fair enough Joanne. But, what age do you suggest is actually unacceptable to racially vilify someone?
"He probably should apologise because maybe he should have picked his target a little bit better.
You mean he should have picked someone near your daughter who didn't abuse him?? No, I think Adam his the target that night better than he hits any of his targets by foot or hand these days!
"She'd only turned 13 five days beforehand. She was technically still 12. She had no idea what she was saying."
No, no, Joanne, technically, literally, factually ... no matter how you do the maths, if she turned 13 five days beforehand, she's still 13. But you're a Collingwood supporter. Maths probably isn't your strongest point.
Joanne, the only thing that Adam should feel sorry about in this instance is that your poor daughter had to go to school the next day with the rest of Australia knowing your ignorance.
Jason Akermanis reminds me of Jekyll and Hyde. Jason is often an intelligent, well-informed and astute fellow; next thing a switch is thrown and we are confronted with ... CLACKERMANIS who spouts comments from his backside.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

This is the bloke that had the nerve to make negative comments about Jim Stynes ( whether there was any truth to them or not, have some @@@@ing respect) in the days following his death. He is a bloke desperately clinging to any semblance of relevance by saying things deliberately provocative that get him some more air time. Jason, you are now a coach of a country football team. That is all you are now, kindly sink off into oblivion. You are nobody.

You may have missed it, but Aker's an AFL Legend!
Maybe he's just trying to build up a resume for becoming a shock jock.

watch out. You've got competition.
I know he is, and I did consider that as soon as I posted, but I think you see what I mean. He can't go a period of time without having to say something moronic to put himself back in the spotlight.
This artlcle by Caro takes aim at the AFL hierarchy's response to this week and I think she has it spot on. Not the AFL clubs' response, but the supposedly leadership of the competition.
I have to say that I was mightily disappointed by Gilham's Open Letter, published today on the AFL site. It basically tells AFL fans how wonderful they are, and almost as an afterthought asks people not to boo Goodes because it hurts its feelings. It completely fails to address the basic standards of behaviour that the competition expects of its fans. Nor does it suggest those incapable or unwilling to abide by those standards are not welcome at games. It effectively panders to those who think the whole think is a beat up by Goodes, the Swans and sections of the media.
I'd also like to add that the silence from the AFL regarding the events that led two supporters to be evicted from last weekend's game has been deafening. On the few other occasions where a fan has been reported for a racist sledge, there has been a condemnation from the media and the AFL, and usually a comment from the club the fan "supports" implying said fan is at least contrite. But this time, close to nothing. And that is despite the fact the two people ejected have appeared to show no contrition and, indeed, received support from others around them at the ground. West Coast came out with a strongly worded statement condemning the overall crowd behaviour last week, and I don't really expect them to say more. But those two events surely demonstrate, beyond anything, that there is still a core of supporters who aren't just casual racists, or bandwagoners, or generally ignorant, but are the real deal and aren't ashamed of it. Why have we heard nothing from the AFL specifically about them?
And this piece, from Malcolm Knox, uses humour (on the surface, anyway) to unravel the layers of denial that so many use to excuse their behaviour towards Goodes. And nails it.
