A tall - potential key position defender. I seem to recall Beatson suggesting they picked up Membrey because he was the best available at that pick.

I would like to think that the Swans recruiting department have been pulling out all stops since they got wind of this trading ban.

Scouring all the state leagues etc, to unearth an undiscovered gem they can develop into a top player....Recent examples being Rampe, Pods, Barlow

It will be a great story if they can make a success out of this debacle.

The only way to look at this now..... is that opportunity knocks.

If we can find a smokey or 2 this off season, which would be at minimal cost,

we'll then have plenty of cap space in either 2015 or 2016 to go after some A graders and give our stocks a further boost.

We've only lost 7 senior listed players from last year, added three academy players and promoted 3 from the rookie list. So we have a net loss of one from the senior list.

Interesting that we've kept Marsh...they must see something in him that the majority of us don't.

I recall after the last pre-season that his was the name that most of the senior players mentioned when asked who was the most improved/most impressive/most likely to break into the senior team.

Hopefully he can have another huge summer and find a spot somewhere.

I think Marsh had a pretty good back end to 2014, largely coinciding with him being moved from the midfield to defence. With his height and speed he shapes as one of many who might be tried in the Malceski type role. His kicking his good, though not as penetrating as Mal's, especially when Mal's kicking was absolutely at its best, pre-knees. He's much quicker and about the same height. What he lacks is the understanding that Mal showed right from his early career of the need to run his socks off, and of where to run to get involved.

Surely a key defender is what we need. Have looked at Emma Quayle's list top 100 and the key defenders (at least as tall as Richards and Grundy) and which may be available at 37 are Logan Austin (Belconnen).Keenan Reynolds (west Adelaide), Nick Jackson (Apsley), Dan Howe(Bushrangers), Daniel Nielson (Eastern Ranges),Christian bukx-Smith (Gippsland Power), Eric Vickers-willis and Oscar Macdonald (Ballarat rebels). Surely we can find something amongst them
                      .

Am I right in saying that he would have done the pre-season with midfield Liz? I remember some comparisons to JPK and big bodied mids...maybe if he spends an entire summer with the defensive group it will help him improve his understanding of the way they go about things because that was easily one of Mal's best traits...he was always in the right spot

But don't we normally delist a couple of players after the trade period each year? That will free up a couple of spots if they do.

I have heard of a player that may be a gem in a few years. Craig Moller with Freo. He was a NSW scholarship player but picked up by Dockers in 2012 rookie draft. He has played 1 game and that was last year when they rested half their team against St Kilda before playing Hawks in semi. This will probably be Craigs 3rd yr on their rookie list. He is 204 cm and 20 years old. A basketballer playing ruck (what else).

Just a note for the memory bank. Maybe he wants to come home? Who knows how good he will be?

Trade period fail. Im of the firm belief that to stay at the top, you need to bring in a free agent every year. You basically get them for nothing, so even if a bit of journey man, it still strengthens your club.

                              Unfortunetly, AFL knobbled us.

It's not ideal but I see it as an opportunity to back the kids in, may give the opportunity for a Jones, Nankervis, Heeney or even X Richards to get an extended run in the seniors that they otherwise may not have got. I think we've got sufficient young talent in the reserves to ride this out.

Even if we could have traded or got a free agent, I can't think of anyone available who is an adequate replacement for Malceski. I suspect McVeigh or Rampe will take over his role down back
