Laidler is already at the club and has played very well as a tall defender. Last week in the Reserves, he showed considerable class again, and it is a pity he appears ineligible for the GF game in Brisbane today.

I would not be totally surprised if he played against NMFC next Friday as his size and strength might be good for match-ups.

I've thought about making comments about AJ's furture (made purely from a business POV and leaving emotion out of it) but decided not to for fear of being seen as 'harsh' or 'unfeeling' or worse, even 'unbloodslike'
4 knee reco's has to put both the club and AJ in a position where the question the future.
Not suggesting for a minute that the club should dump him, but there are other considerations to be made from both side such as how he will play mentally if he gets back.

The club should stand by AJ in whatever decision he makes, and give him every chance to recover fully. What makes his '4 recos' unique I guess is that only one of the reoccurences actually was on the field - the others were complications due to infection. Thus we really don't know what impact it'll have on his football, if he can get the knee right ( a big if of course) and get back onto the field.

We should most certainly not be heartless and throw him on the scrapeheap. If he wants to go on and get back to playing football, it should be at the Swans, and nowhere else. If he decides to throw it in, we should provide him the support he needs to make a career after footy.

I've been in trouble for putting Carlisle forward as an option. I did put down four players who would have to leave to create the salary cap room. That idea fell on deaf ears.

If you want a draft KPD in the second round the best you are going to get is an Abe Davis type. They can occasionally become Rampe's or Johnson's. A lot of the time they are Lockyears.

You could trade a certain midfielder for a first round pick and I better chance at a KPD, but that option is very unpopular.

You could look for a cheap under used and injury prone from another club. Robbie Tarrant, Nathan Brown, Tate Pears or Lewis Johnston who is now a defender.

You can stick with what is currently in the QBE Swans Reserves side, Alire, Richards and Walsh. This is the option of minimal change, which is the preferred Red and White option.

Matt80 will be in trouble with whatever option he puts forward. He is a naughty boy.

Stop doing a razor ray and making everything all about 'me, me, me', and you'll probably find that people will be more willing to engage in discussions.

There is no 'preferred red and white option'. Everyone has a different opinion and is allowed to have it. If you aren't willing to have people propose alternatives, or debate your trading proposals, then don't post them.

If you can't see why people might see the hubris in trading 4 players to get 1 (who isn't even available at the moment), then you need to get out of your corporatised bubble and see a bit more of the world

I'd be using all our picks post-Heeney this year on talls for two reasons.

Next year, we're going to need to use our top two picks on Mills and Dunkley - possibly more depending on the final shape of the new bidding system.

Of our current talls, Ted has a couple of years left, Goodes will be going, Reid is still unfulfilled and Tippett has a dodgy knee. Then, who knows with AJ, Walsh may or may not stay, and Aliir and X are still 'potential'.

So, I'm not trying to claim the world is ending, but simply make the point that for long-term planning, we need to use as many picks as possible this year on talls. Hopefully Abe Davis is not bid high and we can get him for a third round, and stock up with another second round tall.

I guess that was my point, you would assume our list managers would have factored AJ coming back at some point in the future and planned accordingly.
Now that comeback is plus possibly 2 years (maybe more), it not unreasonable to assume they are going to have to change their plans and recruit differently to what they may been planning.

Exactly. It will cost us loads of cap dollars. Something we almost certainly don't have. I think it will be back to finding hidden gems in the rough for a while. We can't complain when we have the pleasure of watching Buddy and Tippett strut their stuff on the SCG (and elsewhere) each week, ably fed by our array of home grown but high salary worthy midfielders and protected by our shoestring defence.

Im very much liking X and AA coming thru..........imagine another pre season working on Buddy, Tip, Reid etc..........I have seen enough of these two guys to believe they can be future KPPs for the Swans Snrs team

I suspect we will draft a tall or two and maybe grab a middle aged player (23/24) from the VFL if we are very worried about our tall defender depth due to AJ and AA coming back from knee injuries

but right now Reid and Laidler can be make shift tall defender rotations if we lost Reg or Ted for periods of time..........it is not ideal but what team has gun KPP sitting in ressies ? it is simply not affordable under a sal cap

as we saw with Freeo if you loose your two best defenders in McPharlin and Johnson you probably wont get past the initial finals anyway........no matter how good your forwards or midfield are

Seeing that he wants to continue playing I hope that another club picks him and also that he gets to play 300 games. In my opinion he has been a great warrior for the club.

LOL. Keep making up "facts" to suit your spin. He [McVeigh]was a young 17 year old when he joined the club. Just because he took a normal length of time to develop into a regular senior player doesn't mean he was "a disappointment" in his first three years.

I guess you were not one of those people referring to him as McHack then, Liz? I recall it being not uncommon at one time.

Also, I think McVeigh did speak in an interview about how missing the 2005 flag was a catalyst for him to improve his performance.

I do agree that going through hardship isn't necessary for being a great leader though.

A bit OT, but I've been wondering if the Swans might not expect Buddy to play out his contract, but to stay on the list? Could the thinking be "Buddy will play until he's 33 and his contract will be worth $10m. We can't afford that over 6 years, but we can afford it over 9 years."

It would be a long time to have a list spot taken by someone who's not playing, but the pay-off in getting Buddy is pretty huge.

It's crazy talk, I know and almost certainly not the case, but it would be a bold and exciting play if it was.
