Never though I'd pine for the days of Demetriou. The clown in charge at the moment is just a puppet for a certain club president who I can't name due the swear filter going berserk.
They didn't seem to have issues when the Premiers of the last 2 years added a gun defender and a top 10 draft pick to their ranks. The hypocrisy at the AFL is breathtaking at the moment.

"GWS boss David Matthews has slammed suggestions the AFL would review the boundaries of their academy zone because the Giants enjoy some traditional Aussie rules strong holds in particular the Riverina."
"Swans Chairman Andrew Pridham threw his support behind Matthews? stance and warned critics of the system to back off.
?The academy system and the ability to develop talent in NSW and Queensland is incredibly important to the AFL. It should be left alone for a while to see how it develops,? Pridham said.

I never disliked Demitriou. The only thing that really alloyed me was when he made light of the Essendon drugs thing right at the beginning of it all and then crazily backpedaled when it all blew up.
But he always did well for the AFL, and I think he upheld the dignity and strength that his predecessors brought to the job.
That is all over now with weak as piss Gillon who is clearly either aligned with Eddie and others or scared to death of them.
What I would really love to see is the Swans and other club come out and attack (in a nice way) some of the other clubs who take the lions share of FTA TV games (thereby solidifying their young supporter based indefinitely) or perhaps even question the teams who play in the biggest H & A game of the year - Anzac Day.
There is a strong argument for sharing this game between other teams. Essendon and Collingwood weren't the only teams sending players overseas, and Collingwood's credentials can apparently be called into doubt - Why the Pies don’t deserve to play on Anzac Day | The New Daily

The only real power the academy clubs have against Eddie and Gill is to stay united and pull out of running the academies if the incentives are not sufficient enough and this should be made clear the the AFL. The Swans will still end up with a couple of super players in Heeney and Mills and perhaps a few others. We will do okay even without the academies. Meanwhile the AFL know that the academies are vital for the survival of the other 3 clubs and the academies would fail if run by the AFL. The AFL need to tread very carefully here. If the academy system collapses due to the proposed restrictions it will soon become apparent that they shot themselves in the foot.
The AFL Commission will have to decide on this in the end. There have been a couple of personnel changes there. Hopefully the new group analyse the situation correctly and come to the right decision. I am not against a system which has a strong club paying something closer to fair market value for a player, but I don't think any player should cost 4 draft picks and a million dollars. That's way over the top.Comment

Sadly, based on recent history, I can't see the Swans being a part of this type of 'radical' action. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

I have no doubt that the Swans will pull out of the academy if the pros don't outweighs the cons. All of my insiders are stating this. I suppose the question is, at what point does it cease to become beneficial for us?
There are so many aspects to consider. Not only is it a matter of the cost vs the players that we can recruit, it's also about the longer term benefits of the academies to us but especially the AFL in general; increases to our supporter base, increases in the numbers that play AFL, development of the AFL brand, etc. The northern clubs are severely disadvantaged by the go home factor. The northern clubs need the academies to equalise this imbalance.Comment

I would actually be supportive of giving GWS and the Suns some additional benefits. They don't have any F/S players coming through so I feel that they need some extra assistance in that respect. This would be assuming that the previous benefits, In particular, the trading ban on their competition (ie us) would have to be removed.Comment

The Anzac Day match should be either rotated amongst the clubs or go to the GF teams of the previous year. Outside of the GF it's the greatest draw card in terms of membership, dollars and branding for Collingwood and Essendon which is grossly unfair.Last edited by S.S. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Ideally we should have a friendly rivalry with GWS.

Off the field yes, but on the field both clubs are battling for the hearts and minds of Sydneysiders, so we cannot afford to show them any mercy in one of the world's most competitive sporting markets.Comment

Just look at the bottom 2 on the ladder and the state that the 2 qld clubs are in at the moment and then tell me that we need to get rid of the academies!
Hopefully if they continue their poor form the AFL might buckle in playing with the rules for at least 1 more year...Comment

It seems that there will be an equal discount of 20% for father/sons & academy players according to the article on AFL website.
