Understand this. Davis was an exception to the rule. Mills will find the fame and fortune down here to be almost irresistible and you seem to think that whichever club they go to won't be pulling out all the stops to ensure that he wants to stay.
You can forget this as a strategy as it is naive and myopic.

It was very interesting to hear Damien Hardwick on SEN tonight say that he believes players should not have a trade veto clause in their contracts. He feels that younger players should not be able to dictate where they want to play and that parity would be helped significantly by such a rule. 21yo potential superstars should not be able to pick and choose where they play next, essentially. In return, he advocated reducing the restricted free agent eligibility period by a year to 7 years.

Article in Herald Sun about two days ago. All teams will be able to assess Callum enough by the end of the year. Unless further injury.

Hardwick is dreaming - it won't happen, why would the players agree to that? Short memory as well - doubt he would have been happy for Essendon to trade him to a bottom club against his wishes at the time.

Outside of the U.S. there aren't many major sports that have such a system anyway - and with their 'at-will' employment laws (ie. you only have a job as long as the employer wants you to), it's a totally different environment here in any case.

What about the young fringe players, particularly in top teams, who can't secure games? Imagine if (say) Membrey, or Lamb or any of the fringe GWS/GCS players who are forced to stay on their team's list but only string together occasional games. If they can become eligible for free agency without being delisted; their currency would be much lower than when they were <21. They should be able to maximise their incomes if they want to.

Firstly. I'm just reporting what Hardwick said. Secondly, he's not saying you have to stay on your team's list, just that you can't pick and choose who they trade you to.

Jake had 23 touches for our reserves on the weekend, pretty decent numbers!

How old is he? Is he in the Rams squad?

Edit: Just went back through the thread and noticed he is turning 18 and is in the squad. Could be promising!

Does anyone know if Veale's a left or right footer? The low, long pin point drop punts sound great! Would love to see us have a quality left foot weapon in the side again! All the other good teams have them, noticeably the Hawks!

Especially considering both Mills and Dunkley are right footers.

Not from our own academy, but it's good to see another NSW/ACT kid debuting this weekend, well done Jack Steele! He can genuinely play as well.

Now that Eddie has successfully stuffed up the Academy System he and others are going further.

Read in the herald sun (yuck) that clubs are in favour of using future picks for academy/F/S picks i.e. Collingwood, Hawthorn, Sydney, etc and the AFL are looking at it, but probably will not come in this year. SURPRISE SURPRISE so Sydney will not be able to use it this year for Mills and Dunkley but all clubs will be able to from next year.

Is there any point in us being in the AFL? (just kidding here).

That's not how I read the version of the story on either the AFL site or the Age site. (I don't read the HS.)

My understanding is that other clubs are saying it is unfair if future picks can be used for FS and Academy selections but not more widely. There is some merit in that, though obviously not yet a mechanism for trading future picks other than in the context of the proposed FS and Academy bidding. I think we will still be allowed to go into deficit this year but the broader trading of future picks won't be allowed this year.

Trading future picks works in the NFL because there's a clear pipeline of talent coming out of the highly competitive college system. I'm not sure it would work as well in the AFL where teams are recruiting unproven 17 and 18 year olds and predicting how strong a draft will be two or three years from now would be an exercise fraught with risk.

The AFL have also been reluctant to allow trading of future picks for fear that poorly managed clubs would be a basket case for years if they stuff it up.
