To me this matter of Horse thinking outside the box (or at the very least being prepared to pick up someone's thinking outside the box) is part of his growth as a coach. Not that he hasn't done it before - slingshot comes to mind - but it gives us an edge over the more conventional approaches. Heeney could be a brilliant backman, Xav is shaping well as a forward option - I hope we give them both a try against Carlton.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Heeney is the better player and even though it would be great to see him diversify his playing roles I would still prefer to see Newman given a run. Heeney can return to the forward line if he's ready, which presumably he is. Hopefully being ready would mean he is ready to resume scoring too.

If Newman doesn't get a game now, what are we waiting for? How 'costly' would it be to upgrade him? We don't need to save that rookie upgrade spot for anyone else as the other rookie contenders have already been elevated (Papley, Foote, Marsh). I suppose they have to pay him a bit more but surely that wouldn't be enough to prevent it happening. Indeed, I'm curious why they upgraded Foote when they weren't about to pick him. What are the downsides of picking Newman - hardness? discipline? tank? He's got the skill, creativity and enough pace and he must be pretty well drilled in our structures etc by now.

If they do want to pick him, by when do they have to upgrade him? Would we expect to hear something today?

Does upgrading Foote have something to do with our ability trade him? Were there other clubs sniffing around?

Sniffing around Foote? Sounds vaguely like a fetish to me.

You'd have to be a heel to try and steal Foote from the Swans. He seems to be instep with our contested footy but this is not the sole attribute. Give him the sniff of a goal and he will nail it. I think he was elevated to keep the senior midfielders on their toes!

We don't want to give him the boot.

I'm just starting to feel a little bit remorseful now.

Well if the shoe fits you just have to wear it. Or next time put a sock in it!

One of our best athletes, Foote

Is this tongue in cheek? It seems laced with sarcasm!

I really regret this. I'm going to have to tie one on tonight to forget about this. Maybe I should lace my drink with something...

Don't regret it. Just be thankful that the player in question wasn't Jack Hiscox.
