It was reported at the start of the year that the average salary of an AFL player is currently a smidgen over 300k. Given the projected rise of the salary cap in the coming years I would say that a 380k offer is a little below par for Mitchell, who while not in the elite class is still easily above average for mine

So it's good to see the GPS schools finally getting involved in the AFL, when I was there it was only Riverview at the time. I would of killed for it.
It's massive, a nut that has taken 30 years to crack. We all assumed that when Riverview entered the North Shore Junior Association in the mid 1980s (1984 I think) that it would just be a matter of time before the other schools came on board but those bastions of conservatism and "tradition" have shown the stubbornness I'd expect from that old school brigade. And I imagine the brothers at Joeys are none too happy about it

In time I have no doubt that the GPS AFL Competition will become an elite competition. Whilst these schools may have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st sporting century now they are in it their competitive instincts will take over and the high standards of these schools will ensure that these schools become an elite breeding ground for AFL players. And I expect that the parent communities in each of these schools will talk with their feet and really get behind it, the parents have wanted AFL for years, it's just the boring old rugby farts running the schools that have resisted.

I have no doubt that within 5 years that this system will be supplying 3-4 draftees minimum per year.

        Well done AFL!!!

Next year Mills/Heeney will move to the midfield so should be ok. Newman gets blooded and with Zak Jones back, we will hold up alright.
He's 100% gone if that is the offer. I'd think he is worth $500K a year but clearly we cannot afford that so off he goes. I would prefer to keep Isaac and Callum and bank the salary to our cap and take the pick.

I guess the salary cap squeeze is well and truly on, I assumed he'd be looking at offers from $500k
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I have no doubt we will deal with it fine if he does go. Foote is another that, on the back of a good 2016 (and assuming he is promoted), and hopefully a good pre-season, could put his hand up for more seniors experience.
I have no doubt he can get $500,000+ and if that is true he'd be giving up $600-700,000 over 5 years.

Foote is 50-50 in terms of making it I reckon but he is heading in the right direction and it's a tough midfield to break into. I could see him being a third year rookie next year albeit one that gets quite a few senior chances

To be fair I always assumed we'd lose one we wanted to keep because of Buddy and Tippett and really I think that apart from Mummy Tom is the one.

Once the new cap comes into play, and I hear they are talking about a $800,000 increase every year of the new deal to about $15m TPP I think we'll be OK. In fact I reckon that even when his contract spikes that Buddy won't even be the comp's highest player. Whether Tippett has been worth $900,000 is highly debatable in my opinion.....

Tippett only has a couple years left on his contract and the cap going up should be fine with Heeney going in. Give Mills another year still needs to bulk up

For someone who was meant to have absolutely elite disposal as a junior, his kicking is mediocre at best. His hand balling is top shelf but a guy who can kick (which he is average at) and run (which he has endurance, but is slow, at) is far more valuable. Overall, if we can get a 1st round pick for him I won't lose any sleep. I think the Hawks see him as a replacement for S Mitchell. They are similar physical types with similar pace, but S Mitchell's evasive skills and quality of disposal are in a whole different (better) universe.

If we are only offering 380K for Mitchell, it seems like we are actually trying to get him to ask for a trade, knowing the salary pressures in coming years with Heeney and Mills and our team imbalance (needing KPD and outside pace in the midfield).

You may well be right there, I'd take their 2017 first rounder because it may well become a top 10 pick

Yes but he has an uncanny knack of knowing where to be nearly 30 times a game to get those touches, and that's despite lacking the leg-speed to get him into position ... reading the play like that is a skill that's hard to teach

It's only a positive if you use it to advantage. Which he does 51.27% of the time.

A mate said someone tonight on Fox said Mitchell is definitely going to the Hawks. I just don't know how they can get these trades done as Gold Coast won't take peanuts for O'Meara and we'd want a high pick for Mitchell.

Hawks now have pick 13/14 and are publicly committed to O'Meara so no way can they satisfy us as well. Carlton the other oft referred to destination now have to get Marchbank from GWS who want their pick 5 as part of any deal.

Reckon Tom will re-sign after the season finishes despite what the Fox reporter claims. We can't be at our cap limit as we've just added Newman for two years and that would be the extra we needed for Mitchell.

Until Greg Williams' teammates learned to read him he was a bit inefficient with his lightning quick hands at the start of his Sydney days.

But having said that, I think too many of Tom's give by hand are short, to a teammate who's still in traffic. And Tom's first and second instinct, to me, is to deliver by hand, when a kick could be the better second option. His thinking for delivery by foot seems slow, rendering him prone to being more frequently tackled than Luke Ablett was.

Sign a short term deal to get him to free agency?

This is where the ability to trade future picks will assist the Hawks. I think GC might be willing to accept Hawthorn's 2017 first round pick, as it is likely to be no better than this year's plus the Suns have already stockpiled a heap of early picks this year - they would want to spread it out over the course of 2 years.
