Perhaps the best way of looking at it: if Buddy had come to the Swans first would we have gone after Tippo and offered him $900k a year? No. so given we have Buddy would it be ok to offload Tippett? Not sure. He did beat Goldstein when we played North and if he hadn't got injured who knows?Comment

There was a lot of discussion around Tom Boyd that it is / was n't fair to judge him on his salary (and similarly Tom Scully); that he should be judged as a player. I think it's harder to judge because Tippo hasn't really worked as a pure forward and had to reinvent himself as a ruckman. which we now have 4 of, but are short of marking targets.

But the reality is that another team won't pay him that money and we did let him go we'd be paying a significant % of his pay so we keep him and hope he firesComment

Not sure if we'll end up doing anything this trade period with picks 14 and 17 but assuming we don't, based on the AFL's Phantom Draft issued last week and (albeit not knowing what picks GWS and GC will finally have) but looking at how the top three academy kids could drift out in selection number, our two picks could come from the Simpkin, Withelden, Venables, Florent, Gallucci, Bolton (appropriate),Battle batch of draftees.
Now I know the write ups always pump up their tyres but thinking two of those would be a nice addition to what we already have on the list.
Wonder what our target types will be? I think the mantra of best available with your first then select for need.Comment

We cant win a flag without tippet firing, so any talk of getting rid of him is really saying we should close this premiership window we are in.
We need to be maximizing his potential. The thing that killed us in 2016 was tippet / sinclair was out predered ruck combo which worked well but come finals we were shuffling ruck combos all through the finals series. It never gelled.Comment

It will be interesting to see what unfolds for us this week.
At the moment we have picks 14,17,39 and 52. If Nankervis requests a trade to Richmond as we all suspect will happen then I don't think a double upgrade of Picks 39 and 52 to 27 and 46 would be unreasonable.
We could use pick 46 for the best available ruckman and have a third pick in the top 30. But it would leave us with no points for Jake Brown if we select him, maybe we think he is RD material.
Picks a 27 and 46 would be attractive to the Lions though as they will want to trade back their Pick 21 for two later picks to select Jacob Allison and Elliot Himmelberg from their Academy with points. Bu then we'd be a ruckman short - maybe the club can recruit an unlisted veteran ruckman, a Jamar type, as cover for one season and use him as a mentor for a couple of rookie draftees like Liam Maze. Get him into the coaching pathway and give us a bit of insurance.
And maybe of they want Towers they'll swap 21 for 16, though I think this is probably unlikely as if the Lions want Dean they may well get him in the PSD.Comment

I would take Richmond's 2017 2nd rounder if they preferred, but his year's 3rd rounder at 46 should be enough to get Tony Olango.
I don't think Towers will walk to the PSD. If we can't get an adequate trade, we will find a way to resign him. Brisbane may still have more picks coming with Hanley and Rockliff on the table.
If we are left with pick 39 it won't be that bad as there should be a few decent defenders still available.
We won't need points for Jake Brown. If he does get a bid it will likely be after pick 55 where we won't need any points.
It will be a funny draft with GWS, GC and Brisbane holding so many top picks. It's almost like the expansion draft concession years. GC say they want players: Maybe they would be interested in Towers, Robbo or BJ. They've got a great selection of picks to choose from.
PS: I also agree with your comments on the Saints. I never thought they could rebuild so quickly and are now looking a serious challenger for the top 8. Their 2 1st rounders in 2017 should keep the momentum going, while many other clubs have traded away their future draft picks. Their spine looks solid with McCartin and Bruce up forward and Carlisle and Goddard down back and a decent couple of ruckmen. There are some resemblances to the WB in the way they play, so may surprise a few next year. Melbourne is also building a good list, with an especially strong young midfield group.Comment

I heard this from someone that has a few afl contacts also regarding O'meara...they also said Melbourne were also making a play for Kurt Tippett and negotiations taking place? Anyone else heard anything about this?- - - Updated - - -
I kept reading and saw other posts about this...may be something to itComment

Yep saying that does several things
1. Makes the team, supporters and everyone else less suspicious
2. Drives up their trade value
3. Maybe the players gets to duck and weave reporters

I don't believe in his 5th year at the Swans, he will be on a huge amount. Sure he was given a contract extension but NONE of us would actually know what coin he is on!Comment

How much is he actually on? The assumption made by all & sundry is that he is on the same as his first two years.

Whatever, I'd be very very surprised if gets tradedComment

One thing that I think is absolutely 100% certain though is that if we are to make a late play for JOM then we must find someone else to pay Tippett's wages in full.
I can't see the JOM deal falling over now as the Hawks have invested too much to get pick 10 and have the deal fall over. The Roar has a "pundit" suggesting that Schoenmakers and Hartung will go to the Lions who will then send Hanley to the Suns along with the Hawks Pick 10. I'd suggest that is about as good as deal as the Suns will get.Comment
