This is fascinating speculation. Seems unlikely but there is some sense. On the one hand getting O'Meara, while a bit of a risk, seemed too good to be true. In addition, Harley only today was saying that we are totally committed to Tippo. On the other hand, Tippo is from the Gold Coast. The Suns have said they do want players. Tippo is a valuable, key position player albeit not as young as I would have thought they would want and not especially a position they need (they already have Wright and Nicholls as well as Lynch and Day). We do have Nank and Reid who between them can cover for Tippo. Clearing Tippo would give us salary cap for JOM. It's not impossible. But still, I'm with stevoswan, where's the mail on Tippett for O'Meara coming from? Not among Robbo's tweets. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Yes, this is my understanding. He nominated us as a F/S destination, on the understanding that we would pick him up only if he was nominated by another non-Victorian club. When the Bulldogs nominated him, there was no need for us to draft him. This struck me as a very decent thing to do.Comment

It would be brilliant to stick it to Hawthorn thoughLast edited by Markwebbos; 13 October 2016, 10:06 PM.Comment

We haven't got pick 14 yet, it's only a gentleman's agreement so both clubs can move forward to their next move.
If we were trying to cut Hawthorn's lunch with dabbling in the O'Meara trade, I could see the Mitchell trade going back to the drawing board.
Anyway, we can't afford O'Meara and Heeney new contract and Buddy and Tippett and JPK new contract ......
Think this is GC leaking to Robbo to up the pressure on Hawks but still don't see how Hawks get O'Meara deal done given that he is an elite player and GC Chairman has put the blowtorch to Hawks about not lowballing them.Comment

Tippet and Towers part of JOM deal perhaps.....GC want players not picks....frees up $$$$$ for JOM plus Heeney etc.....
Really O'meara better with us...wont get the number one tag with our midfield...with the hawks he will most likely get that so his body will be battered to all hell..
Kennedy, Parker, Jack on the inside.,..Hanners, Heeney and JOm on the outside...am liking that thought.......
Omeara linked early with swans before hawks annoucement however we dont know if he has said hawks or swans,,,
remember everyone thought buddy to GWS...
Though i can feel another trade ban coming from fitzy no doubt....
There was huge rumours about tippett early in the piece....Comment

I would hate to think that the Swans drafted a player out of niceness rather than what's best for the team.

Swans wanted picks not players for Mitchell.
My assumption was that this was because they wanted to have a few high selections in the draft.
Maybe they wanted some currency to trade in some players in this trade period?
Seems to be backed up in getting the in principle Mitchell deal done so they "cold move on to other tasks" or whatever they said...The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

I read that Brisbane want Billy Hartung and may be willing to part with either pick 19 or 21 for him....In the process helping Hawthorn land O'Meara.
That would be overs big time for a player not even in Hawthorns best 22...
We should offer up Towers, given Brisbane wants to throw away their picks for ordinary players.,Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Found another hobby horse barry? Of course Dunkley didnt say he wasnt willing to go anywhere, but he made it clear he wanted to stay in Melbourne. He played the game and got what he wanted. He did the typical, yeah nah we'll see what happens, keep my options open. He left it till the very last minute to nominate f/s eligibility and even then the suspicion was that it was a back stop in case he was drafted to a club outside of Melbourne.
We'd already spent a huge amount on Mills, so aside from his wishes to stay in Melbourne there may have been further questions about our ability to match his value at that range.
Either way he plays for the dogs, let it go.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

He's not had that many to play with. I can't recall exactly when he took control of the drafting. I know he was consulting to the club before he became head of recruiting. Veszpremi (2007)wasn't his call (I think that was Maxfield) but he may well have been responsible for Johnston. Rohan and Jetta (2009) were decent picks. Maybe not outstanding but they fitted the need for speed and it's not his fault that Rohan had his leg snapped in two.
Lamb, Mitchell and Towers (2010,11,12) were technically not top 20 picks, though I guess you have to include them as close enough. Mitchell obviously picked himself. And yes, the other two were so-so choices.
Jones (2013) was a solid choice at that pick, while you can't fault his talent spotting at picking up Heeney and Mills in 2014 and 2015.
OK, so maybe it's not such a great record, taking into account the draft distortions. But it's no worse than Barham's record for the bulk of the naughties.
There are so many academy's and recruiters that i would say that there is no chance of some gem slipping though all those eyes.
Callum Twomey?s Phantom Form Guide is a very good guide of where the players will go and their talent.
We need to get our first pick right for once; ie not rely upon academy's of father/son picks.
We need a first round pick ready to go first game like Heeney or Mills, like Griffin Logue or Daniel Venables; and a very good prospect who needs a few years put into him like Josh Rotham or Cedrix Cox, both running half backs.doof-doofComment

Also Cunningham; yes he is down on confidence but we have other players like Newman coming though so he is dept player at best.
Abe Davis another one; do we want to keep him???
In fact just give them our list for the NEAFL and let them choose who they want.doof-doofComment
