Why Essendon? Since he is a delisted he becomes a delisted free agent meaning he can sign with any club that offers him a contract. No need to enter the pre-season draft. If we didn't delist X and his contract let his contract expire he would need to nominate for the draft however.

Clearly X requesting a trade or siomething else has upset the club as they've withdrawn the 2 year deal and delisted him. can it just be the trade request? There has to be more to it than that.Comment

Maybe just a way to get him his wish to go back to Victoria i.e. as a DFA any club can take him at no cost to them.(Am I right about this?)Comment

But of course, that's all largely guesswork?

I read a few days earlier that X wanted to return to the Swans on the deal offered to him earlier but Harley our football director had reservations about him now. So does the delisting reflect this or does it reflect a good offer from a Melbourne based club surfacing?

It's possible, but if you read what Tom Harley actually said, it doesn't sound very likely.
It's a damn shame two young local blokes who came out of the same junior comp both got cut on the same day.

I think we all agree contracts aren't worth the paper they're written on. If we signed X on a 2 year deal as planned he'll see out 12 months then go through this circus all again. Better to sever ties now, both for him and the club

Re X, there were an short interview piece on the AFL website a few months ago with X where he talks about some tough conversations/situations with Shaw and other coaches who were trying to get the best out of him. I got the gist from that article that he was reluctant/resistant to what Shaw wanted to try (moving him to offence?) and my conclusion (rightly or wrongly) is that this might have damaged his relationship/reputation with some of the coaching staff by appearing to be uncooperative when he was looking to be running out of chances to prove he could make it as a senior player.Comment

Mullen is getting desperate to salvage some form of currency on X. Can't imagine there was a whole lot of interest to begin with though as no club made a play.Comment

I assume he's been told he will be picked up by someone. If not then such a bad decision from him

Jack Fitzpatrick is a newly delisted ruck. I wonder why Hawthorn is getting rid of him as they are not exactly blessed with picks and he did ok for them in the first game where they called him up.
They have also let Spangher and Litherland go. It would be funny if we picked up Spangher again (versatile tall depth player) but I can't see it happening. Don't know much about Litherland. All opinions are not equal. Yes, from a distance, it does seem a bit strange. Though I don't really like to comment about behind the scenes stuff, that I have no real idea about: he did seem to be overweight when he came back from injury. Maybe there was an attitude problem during rehabilitation? If so, it's possible that a delisting and a subsequent rookie listing, might be a rough justice style of attitude correction?
But of course, that's all largely guesswork?
New Phantom Draft
One of the best amateur draft followers, Chris Doerre, better known as Knightmare, posted his phantom draft on ESPN: Knightmare first 2017 AFL phantom draft
I was surprised to see Scrimshaw at GC's first pick. I commented earlier that I thought he might be a target for GC, but wouldn't have thought he would go this early. This opened up a number of interesting choices available to the Swans. Chris notes the need for pace in his comments for both of our 1st round picks, which I agree with in general, but I wouldn't say we are desperate. In any case, this draft has a lot of quality players with good pace to choose from, so it's not an issue.
Chris has Oliver Florent going to us at pick 9, followed in the draft by Taranto and Logue. I still think it would be a gift to see Taranto still available at our pick, and think we would have to take him if he is. I see him in the class of an Isaac Heeney, and too good to pass up. I would drop Florent just behind Logue, but wouldn't be disappointed if we drafted him.
Jarrod Berry is shown as going to the Bulldogs just ahead of our pick, so he might still be available, and would be my choice this late in the draft. Chris has us taking Cedric Cox, someone who has risen a lot this year in the draft considerations, but I don't think he's the best match for our needs. Chris still has Gallucci and Sam Powell-Pepper available at our pick and would prefer either of these.
It's looking very good that we will land 2 high quality players with our first 2 picks this year. If it came down to trading Tom Mitchell for Tim Taranto, I wouldn't have a 2nd thought about it.Comment
