It depends just how loose the AFL is getting with its interpretations (or, perhaps, on what the rules actually say. Why aren't these rules published? So much of this stuff isn't as transparent as it should be for no clear reason).
I wasn't clear on this. They only have to trade in 2 1st rounders to even up on this requirement, which would free them to trade out their 1st round pick for 2018. They will have to trade in at least one, and then would be obliged to use their 2018 first rounder as well. A clever club should be able to exploit this weakness in Geelong's position, especially for a club sitting with a pick in the latter part of the 1st round, because the downgrade to Carlton's 2nd pick, which Geelong holds, will not be so great. If Reid leaves at a free agent we are likely to get a first round or end of first round compo pick for him which would be useful.

Since we will be using 2 first round picks this year, I assume we can trade out our first rounders for the next 3 years if we make sure we have 2 in 2020.

      Hiscox, Davis & X gone!

That's either one or two too many delistings by my reckoning to keep our senior list at 38. So we are either going to upgrade Marsh as well and/or redraft X and/or Davis and/or are getting a DFA.

Three delistings gives so many permutations to what can now happen. Maybe we are going to use a pick out in the 80s?

Kinda surprised re X. I thought he and the club would sort it out. Pity the two local Sydney boys got cut, it's understandable, but a pity nonetheless.

Do feel a bit sorry for Xavier unless he really didnt want to stay in Sydney, seems harsh to delist him cos he requested a trade makes me wonder if Talia will ever play seniors cis of his indiscretion. On 3AW on Monday night Gerard Healy suggested that Xavier had caused a bit of trouble after GF but it was brushed over.

If he goes to Hawthorn as a FA, they might be happy to fudge the books to help us get a better return for him

Davis must have done something naughty to get delisted. He's far too talented to be cut. I suppose we will never know.

It will be interesting to see what we do with the extra primary list spot: Elevate Marsh, elevate COR, sign a DFA (maybe Shaun Edwards) or use it for Jake Brown.

With both X and Davis out, it might indicate that we are fact going after Logue in the draft and the prospects for Reid, Talia and AJ are looking good.

Not surprised they cut Hiscox, but a bit surprised by Davis, who I thought showed some really decent signs this year. Maybe we might re-rookie him?

I think we may well upgrade Marsh. He is no world beater, but we know he can come in and do a job in the back 6, and will provide competition and depth. He doesn't have to improve a hell of a lot to become a very decent AFL standard defender - and you'd hope he still has a fair bit of improvement in him.

Alex Silvagni is available as a delisted free agent tall defender.

At 29 he gives some cheap extra depth for 1-2 years as AJ and Tahlia are still uncertain for 2017.

I'd be exceptionally surprised if we elevate COR over marsh. I have huge wraps on the guy, but I'd expect we will be happy to give him another year on the rookie list. I doubt we will take Jake Brown onto the senior list before we would elevate Marsh or COR however.

Its good we have some flexibility up our sleeve and it'll be interesting to see what we end up doing.

It seems a contract isn't worth the paper it's signed on these days.

Wow! Didn't expect all of these 3 players to be delisted! I'm presuming X is being de-listed because he doesn't want to stay not because we don't want him. A bit sad too because Hiscox and Davis are among the very few academy players we have drafted.

Ludwig, don't know how you're going to take this news about Abaina. Suggests you have been a long way off base with your read on him. Will be interesting to see if someone else picks him up but I'm thinking not. Wonder if we might rookie list him?

Also suggests that we will be leaning a little bit more towards getting at least one KPP in the drafts. Also, now we have 9 players out the door, even if we upgrade 3-4 rookies (Newman, Papley, Marsh, Foote) and draft 4 we may still look to pick up 1-2 delisted free agents. A KPP? A journeyman ruck. Anyone reckon we'd consider Barlow? I'd guess not mostly because I think he'll be more in demand elsewhere with a club with more salary cap space. Where is the list of delisted free agents on the market from Tuesday?

My bet it's a ruckman. Minson, Zac Clarke or Petrie anyone?

Has Foote been confirmed as an upgrade or are we just assuming?

So much for all the talent from the academy, apart from Heeney and Mills and hence the uproar last couple of years there has not been much. Exactly why it was all an over reaction

I'm well and truly stunned by Abe's delisting. Something doesn't seem right there. Maybe they thought he was a bit too casual in the way he went about things, or they asked him to shed a few kilos, but didn't. I think on talent alone he had a bright future, so suspect there was something more to it than meets the eye.
