I was at the viewing last night. I was surprised that it didn't make me as angry as I thought it would (the well-timed placing of Charlie Pickering's intelligent, humourous calling out of 'middle-age white men' might have helped temper the growing anger and exasperation).

The most emotional parts for me were his mum pleading for everybody to just give him a break and letting him play football, the #istandwithadam game footage and interviews and the comments about him missing out on a proper farewell at the grand final.

The film makers were at the theatre for a Q&A and some of the questions were excellent. It was interesting to hear that Adam wasn't aware of just how much media coverage some of the the incidents generated and how widespread the racism was and it was (understandably) upsetting for him to see. Offsetting this though was that he was also not aware just how massive that #istandwithadam game was and that he became quite emotional seeing the support that a great deal of the public had for him. It made me emotional watching that part so I can only imagine how it made him feel.

The doco will be sent to ALL schools in Australia with resources generated in conjunction with the Australian Human Rights Commission and Recognise (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong). Sporting clubs will also be able to request a copy with the resources free of charge. I think this is brilliant and will go a long way to the younger generations have a greater understanding of racism, specifically casual racism. Unfortunately I've been silly enough to read some of the comments in the doco articles and I have very little faith that the greater football public will even view this documentary ("He's a flog, why would I waste my time watching this") so there is very little chance that they'll change their views. If only they would though - the doco does a great job of debunking the myths of; a) he plays for frees (more than any other players); b) he victimised the 13 year old girl (actual footage shown of his interview the following day where he specifically says "SHE'S NOT TO BLAME" and asks the media to leave her alone and help her), and ; c) Adam brought it on himself (really?!?!).

Adam comes across as the outstanding person he is. So poised, eloquent, humble and calm throughout all his interviews and appearances.

The film makers mentioned a free-to-air viewing possibly in August/September I believe - again if anybody else was there and I'm misremembering, please correct me, I'm unwell and things are a bit fuzzy.

    .
Further to this, I was quite surprised at Robbo's reaction throughout the time that the doco covers. I'm not a fan of his and was surprised to see how supportive he was of Adam and how critical he was of the AFL. I don't remember that. Goes to show how prejudices cloud our memories of things. It made me a teeny bit (very teeny bit) forgiving of those who remember the Collingwood Fan incident different to reality. I mean a really teeny bit.

Mel, thanks for sharing your experiences at the viewing - highly appreciated.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I saw the movie this morning in a packed State Theatre with lots of people in their red and white. It got a long standing ovation.

This is a great movie. It's basically footage of the time spliced together and it's very well done. People like Sam Newman, Eddie McGuire (how has he still got a job?), Miranda Devine, Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt, are shown as the idiots they are through their own words. (I'd like to call them worse than idiots)

It's also a very good illustration of how prevalent casual and implicit racism is in Australian society. It's clear through the movie, that Adam was booed and vilified because he was an Aboriginal man who spoke up. If he'd just stayed silent he would have been fine. This point is shown over and over again through the movie, pundits tell him ' to change his behaviour' constantly.

It's tragic how Adam's career was cut short, every person who booed him should have a really good look at themselves.

I recommend the movie. It doesn't bludgeon you with a point of view, it lets you make up your own mind, letting the archival footage tell the story.

Saw it this morning also , State Theatre, 9.30am , I’ve never seen a full house at any screening at this time of day.
Ian Darling (appears on stage to a standing ovation after) is an excellent doco/filmmaker who a very impressive CV.
            Check him out on Wiki.

He doesn’t take a position however his assembly of all the footage paints a grim and depressing picture of what Adam has and is still going through.
Adams soft tone and intelligent measured responses in the thick of it are truly remarkable.

I hope he realises (this doc will help big time ) the mounting groundswell of support he (and all the indigenous players) will receive into the future.

Maybe applause will break out again today at the 7th minute of the 3rd quarter today .

            Bravo Ian Darling .
It’s a heart wrenching and important Doc. which is a must see when you can .

I saw it last night at the Casula session. Packed, emotional crowd. It really is a must-see for everyone, and especially Swans fans. The filmmakers have done a wonderful job to make archival footage into a pulsating story.

It made me really proud of the dissenting voices in the media at the time - Waleed, Caro, Robbo and others who called the booing what it was - a racist, bigoted attack on a great Australian.

I hope Adam can, in time, be embraced again by the game he loved.

Darn. Just went to book tickets and it's sold out already.

I reckon they need to give the film a national cinema release. Clearly there are a lot of people keen to see it, and a lot of people talking about it. And a lot more who should go and see it even if they probably won't.

Surely they will (give it a National release).
Ian Darling (Director) is no Johnny-come-lately .
                  He is hugely credentialed .

Edit: Goodes did tweet Warne back with "Ask Adam Gilchrist", who had nominated Goodes for AOY.

Really looking forward seeing the documentary after reading KTigers review.

As I'm not a watcher of the ch9 footy show, I had never seen or heard anything Sam Newman said about Goodesy until last Friday night.
My, my. He's an evil man, isn't he.
The hate in his soul was just disgusting to watch.

Really good article by Roy Masters in The Age and, presumably, Sydney Morning Herald. only someone outside the Melbourne AFL media bubble could write such an article exposing image conscious, arrogant and shallow AFL management. appreciate if someone else could post link - not sure if I can do it.

As the AFL crows, rugby league works quietly on Indigenous excellence

TSFF has just added another screening of THE FINAL QUARTER at 6.30pm Thursday 20th June,
at Event Cinema, but fails to say where, I assume (maybe incorrectly) at The Entertainment Quarter.
