The 2012 GF was on Fox last week and Craig Bird played a pretty good game.

Another contracted player ?chooses? to retire. This time because they?ve told him he won?t get a game next year.

Cloke calls it quits after rough year at Dogs - M.afl.com.au

I?m very uncomfortable about this. Unlike Mummy he?s not injured. Surely they have to honour his contract?

          From the Herald Sun:

?Cloke, who would have most likely spent the season in the VFL, would be paid out next year on the final year of a modest two-season deal.?

It is very important to get this year's draft right because without knowing their contract expiry dates we have a lot of fringe players that may need to be shipped out or may want to leave next year.
            Rose
            Johnson
            McVeigh will retire
            Foote
            Cunningham
            Towers
            Robinson
            Marsh
It could be a busy trade next year.

Don't be. The Dogs have to pay him and they wear that cost in the salary cap for next year.

It's a common practice overseas (NBA) for injured or under-performing athletes to buy them out, or trade them to someone else to dump them. If it frees up head count on the roster, and the player gets what they are contractually obliged as well as the opportunity to find a spot somewhere else... its a win all round.

I really don't have a problem with a lot of those players leaving. The ones I think would be priorities to extend with contracts during the year would be:

                Aliir Aliir
Heath Grundy (depends how the old fox is playing)
                George Hewett
                Jake Lloyd
Jack Maibaum (depends on whether he has a breakout year)
                Sam Naismith
                Nic Newman@
                Tom Papley
                Nick Smith

They're all out of contract at the end of 2018. Cunningham's contract expires in 2019 I think.

Looking at that list and taking into account list deficiencies elsewhere in the league, you'd have to expect it will be hard to retain them all.

I think Alir is required and we'll do what it takes to keep him. Reg isn't going anywhere and I think the blood run thicketh in Paps so he'll most likely re-sign.

As products of the best player development system in AFL, all of the others will be legitimate targets for recruiters and represent opportunities for the players/managers concerned to attract lucrative or better deals (e.g. Lobby and Smiffy will receive big offers from elsewhere you'd think).

Next year's list management/trading will indeed be interesting.

                    To the draft!
For mine they all need to be great kicks, and some pace wouldn't go astray either.
Not fussed on tall/small/back/forward, although I don't think we need anymore ruckman on the main list.

Would Stewart Crameri be a possibility as a link man into the forward line ? la ROK in his pre-onballer phase?

As much as we all love Aliir if he can't break his way into the senior side next year he'll be gone. Crameri could be good depth but wouldn't be best 22 if we were fully fit

I don't see there being a threat of losing any of those 2018 uncontracted players, as long as they are playing senior footy. So all the key ones should be around for some time to come. Nick Smith will be 31 in 2019, so I doubt if there will be any big offers coming his way. There are a few marginal players who we will be looking to either trade or delist. We are set up to take 3 players in the 1st 2 rounds and may look to get another in the 3rd round if the draft is as strong as many have projected.

Naismith would be one who might be up for trade, especially if Darcy Cameron has a strong year. Robbo has already asked to be traded and I don't see things changing much next year. Towers, Rose, Foote and Marsh will have to have pretty good years to get another contract. 5 or 6 senior players will have to go to make space next year, maybe more.

I'm hoping for Jaidyn Stephenson. His evasiveness, pace and long accurate kicking is just what we need.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

He's highly unlikely to get past the top 10.

I think we will end up with Lochie O'Brien, who also has great pace and endurance and is a better kick than Stephenson, but not the x-factor. If we get him, I think we will do alright. I still slightly prefer Balta or Richards, but it's marginal. Aiden Bonar is looking more likely than not to be taken before pick 14.
