Gee that gets my goat. That club has the least amount of integrity of any club in the AFL. I hope he's prepared to take a pay cut to stay with us.

There is no way he will be taking a pay cut for his next contract - he may choose to take less money than elsewhere, but it won't be anywhere near a pay cut for Heeney.

Get effed Norf - no surprise coming from that club.

Whoever wants to lure Heeney better start stockpiling first round picks. A lot of first rounders. Enough rolling over.

But Heeney seems to have more integrity than, say, a Tom Mitchell

That's what I meant. A pay cut in comparison to what he would get elsewhere. He certain not deserves more $ than his current contract.

Norf strikes again: Josh Kelly North Melbourne contract, trade, offer, Lance Franklin, GWS Giants | Fox Sports.

Actually it seems the contracting landscape, especially for elite players, is changing and longer contracts are the norm. We, once again, seem ahead of the curve with this, having recently signed Hanners, Parker, Joey, Mills and Heeney up on long term deals on top of the deals we had already done for Reid, Tippett and, of course, the granddaddy deal, for Buddy. This makes sense to me as a way of combating increasing player movement and freedom. The only way you can really tie down a player is with a contract, as Bryce Gibbs discovered. Even then it's not perfect (see Cam McCarthy and now what may be happening with Gazza) but it's certainly more security than just loyalty or the threat of letting a player 'walk' to the draft, which seems increasingly toothless (although it carried some weight when the Hawks were chasing JOM - but even there it probably compelled the Hawks more than JOM). However, the risk with longer deals is if a player is injured or dramatically loses form then you're stuck with them and the hole their chewing in your salary cap. However they are calculated risks and reflect the, probably appropriate, recalibration in the power dynamic a little more towards the players. (I think that recalibration has now gone about far enough, btw.)
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

North would have to trade for Jones if they don't finish last.

Maybe Jones has been offered a 10 year $5 mill deal. You could secure a good loan with that sort of consistent money coming through.

LOL Norf - what's this then, make offers for every player coming out of contract and hope you land a couple? Or is this player managers using Norf as the stalking horse to push up their players price in new contract negotiations. FM, it's not even R3 and this crap is clogging the airwaves!

It's clogging the airwaves because we have the rediculous situation where it's impossible to rebuild in a short space of time with young draftees so instead clubs will throw money around like confetti to snatch some decent players. Sydney did the same thing in the early nineties- Lockett, Roos, Maxfield & Dyson.

I think Boddo is spot on - teams will throw big money at any player they think they can grab that might come onto the market.

I hope Zak Jones stays, but we may struggle to meet the demands of other clubs. Would be awful to see him really hit his strides this season and then leave.

I was hoping that Zak Jones may sneak under the radar but obviously other clubs have noticed his pre season form. Thought he was a bit timid last week after charging incident with Cloke. Anyhow the article also mention that North will be securing Nick Blakey next year. Do we have any claim for him under the father son rule??

No but he is in the Swans academy - which I understand will give us preferential access to him. Norf will no doubt be trying to continually blow a gasket about it, to try and get the rules changed before next year.

Not quite correct statement Crackedactor, what they said was "They have other big issues to address in the next 12 months, specifically concerning Nick Blakey, son of club legend John, who is a potential top-five draft pick, and Tarryn Thomas, likely to be the first gem unearthed by the Roos' Tasmanian academy, who both become eligible at the 2018 national draft."

Norf have a big issue to address with Nick Blakey BECAUSE as an academy player, he could choose Swans before F/S to North. We have no more privilege to him than North or Brisbane where he is also a F/S. The decision is entirely Nick's, he can nominate one or more of the three clubs in any order he chooses.

Exactly 707, it's up to Nick. He has four choices- Norf F/S, Lions F/S, Sydney as an academy player or enter the draft like Murphy. It should be noted that if he elects to stay in the Sydney academy next year he forfeits all options except Sydney as from my understanding if he stays in the academy next year he has no choice but be picked up by Sydney. Unless they change the rules which they do regularly.
