Zak (to me) seems loyal to his club. I recall his brother Nathan resisting the temptation of free agency a few years back, and stuck with the Demons.

Regardless, we should do everything we can to re-sign him. $600k seems right to me, and we should 100% move on Tippett and/or Reid to get it done.

Why would we do that? And why would Tippett work a year for free? It's not his fault (or as you childishly call him, a rude @@@@@) that we offered him the money we did.

It's simple, we have a legally binding contract we are obliged to pay (unless someone crazily wants to take him off our hands) and we will pay it until the contract expires next year. Then we'll have that money for other players

The problem "moving on" Tippett is that whilst I am sure that many clubs would be prepared to offer him a two year deal I would expect that he won't take a pay cut (and fair enough too) and I would expect any other club would expect us to still pay the bulk of his 2018 salary.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the exercise doesn't it. We're stuck with him for another year whether we like it or not is the sad reality

I can't see why we won't be able to go to $600K, which is what I reckon he is worth. McVeigh is off at season end and he'd be on decent cash and off course Tippett is mercifully off our wages bill at the end of next season.

It's just a matter of whether a club like St Kilda or North, who have huge salary cap space, are prepared to make an offer in excess of market value we cannot compete with. And I just have a feeling that in these crazy times that there will be such an offer made

With the increase in the proposed salary cap wouldn't the club have plenty to keep both Reid and Jones as the contracts for Tippett and Franklin have already been locked in or am I missing something? Why do the southern commentators keep saying that we won't be able to afford them because of the Franklin/Tippett contracts? Doesn't Tippett's contact finish in 2018? Surely a contract renewal can be back end for a season or two as Franklin's was?

Nth Melb have publicly made it known they are chasing quality midfielders and are prepared to pay big dollars to do it. Im tipping they will finish in the bottom 3 on the ladder. If they offer Zak say a 4.5m/5yr deal and he chooses them as his preferred choice, there is no way they will offer their 1st round draft pick for him. In which case I can't see a deal happening that is fair for us. North won't care too much as they would likely get him in the preseason draft if we play hard ball. Which we rarely do. I'm hoping we can come up with the cash to resign him. I guess we will know later in the year how much he is worth.

We probably have a lot of cap space committed to long term contracts for JPK, Parker, Hannebery, Heeney and Mills. We don't know how much has been scheduled to account for the anticipated new CBA salary cap increase. I'm sure we would love to give Zak Jones something close to what these guys are getting, but it's a matter of how many can you pay in the 500k plus range when we've already got Buddy and Tippett on big contracts. At least Tippett comes out of contract next year, and the new contracts are likely to take this into account.

He will be 31 y/o at the end of his current deal (turning 32 in the early rounds of 2019).

Also the earning capacity for endorsements etc would be greater being guaranteed to be on an AFL list for 3 more years, instead of only 1 or 2.

But that would still be a risk for him, which IMO makes waswan's suggestion at least something he would have to think about if it was put to him.

The other possibility of course is that we trade him and he has an uninterrupted pre-season, no injuries and a full season of form approaching his form in R1-12 last year. He earns AA selection and everyone here goes into total meltdown.

It is just part and parcel of the game that some players provide better value. There's nothing to suggest we'll get an offer too good to refuse and that being the case I'd be very very sure of Kurt being with us next year.

Because all clubs get the same increase and I suspect that we have already factored in the TPP increase to a large extent I'd say.

And the fact that we have at least two clubs who have been actively legally manipulating their cap to coincide with the new TV Deal. Pelscham, the ex Saints List Manager, made it clear this was a perfect storm for them in terms of all the pieces coming together and that it had all been very carefully planned

The Swans have always been fair traders. I think that counts in this industry. Don't forget that we gave the Saints Tim Membrey for nothing and accommodated them so he could get onto their list without going to the draft. I don't think they will try to screw us on Zak Jones. It can come back to bite you.

There is also a certain scale that all clubs have to adhere to, not a mandatory one, but a pragmatic one, in that overpaying one player can trigger a salary war within the club and force the whole club's pay scale higher. Successful clubs have managed to keep their players happy enough to stay in the face of better offers from the outside.

I think Tippett will play out his career at Sydney, one or 2 year contract extension for smaller coin at the end of next year (injuries pending). The biggest issue with Tippett is staying on the park, when he's injury free he's a handy player for us.

With Jones I think he'll be leaving. He's a young kid from Melbourne who has a chance to go home for more coin than we can offer (probably), I can understand why he may go
