There is an article in the AFRs Rear Window regarding a meeting tonight of prominent female supporters. According to the article, they are going to grill Andrew Ireland on the Tim Worner issue.

Some of the members are apparently threatening to recind their memberships if Worner remains on the board.

It feels like a less stable period for the club. We are 0-2, key players are injured and the board has rumblings.

You really are a pessimist aren't you JR? I agree Worner should go, he is a liability to our clubs fine reputation, but to intimate that the club is in some sort of crisis is going a little too far.....our real problems lie with the credibility and accountability of the league we participate in.....that's the biggest issue affecting our potential for success (and I mean premierships, for those who think just making it to them is enough).

Not sure about Board Rumblings because we have essentially an unelected board that to all intents and purposes AFL appointed and controlled. Maybe Mostyn will cause a few rumblings but you can bet getting rid of Worner will require AFL sign-off due to his close friendship with Dill.

It's all very cosy and none of us really care as things continue to go well. As long as the club management read the tea leaves and listen to their members then I guess it's probably OK but the test will come, and it will come one day despite our recent sustained stability and success, when a deeply unpopular decision is made by the board which we as members have no avenue to overturn via board election.

Worner won't be the issue, he's a creep but we don't really care that deeply about what is a personal issue and a governance issue for Channel 7. The one I can see is if we ever decide to open a licensed club and start funding our club via the human misery of poker machines. You'd hope that the board will listen and respond if there is sufficient backlash but the reality is there is no formal mechanism for club members to directly influence that decision and I personally think that is a disgrace

Completely agree Mug about the inability of members to influence decisions around the board - I would be furious should we ever seek to get into poker machines. Hopefully the failed experiment of the Swans Club going back several years will keep that idea well off the table.

Hahaha almost any other club, despite our indifferent start to the season and injuries (which are part and parcel of a nature of a highly physical game), would take the broader position the club is in, even taking into account the Worner issue.

Thanks mcs, I know it is a bug bear of mine.

At the moment the club is superbly run in my opinion and I hope it continues to be. But the current lack of proper voting by members just doesn't sit right with me.

If the club ever did move into the pokie space I would be very vocal and active in protesting publicly and I suspect I would not be the only one.

This is true but within a work setting having affairs with "allegedly" four of your employees, drug taking on company time, dodgy expenses and the use of company lawyers to bully one of his mistresses and "make the problem go away" raises serious issues of the way that business is run. You tell me any person below him who would have gotten away with that if he found out...

And if we want good people at the Swans it is an issue for our Board

It's the first time in my memory that the Swans board machinations are appearing in newspaper articles. Caroline Wilson wrote one and the AFR are following our board closely. When an entity board machinations appears in the press then the organisation is in crises.

I think crisis is an absolute OTT exaggeration

It's the old fit and proper test and any club would face the same issue as us if he was on their board.

Having said that, I do think it raises a few questions about who really controls our board. Worner is a very good mate of Gillon who I am sure lobbied very hard to get him into the Swans Board because it really does benefit Gillon to have as many mates on the Swans board when you think about it, it means he has an inside line to every important issue we face.

He is up there with people like David Gonski, Michael Chaney and Catherine Livingston. He has a far superior business reputation than Mike Fitzpatrick and Goyder will have the pick of the best directerships in Australia. I would imagine that club board directors who fought the good fight against Fitzpatrick will think twice about taking on Goyder. Goyder will have the power to get many an ambitions board director many pristine board room opportunities. Would you take on Goyder or the AFL if you have ambitions to be on Australia's most prestigious boards. In short it pays to be on good terms with Goyder.

I like club directors such as Tony Cockerine from the Gold Coast and David Koch from Port because they fight hard for their clubs and will take any AFL commissioner on for their clubs benefit.

I don't want a fighter on the Board, and I certainly don't want someone like Koch though I do acknowledge he probably saved Port Adelaide from a long painful death. But I don't like the idea of having AFL stooges like this creep whose loyalty is principally to Gillon as his sponsor and not us. How on earth can we discuss issues that involve any potential AFL conflict, how can we discuss any confidential issues at all, with any trust in his confidentiality at all.

Female Swans fans also expressed their disdain on Monday night at the names of horses Worner had raced, including Chicks Dig Me, Centrefold Spread and Legs Akimbo.
